Forgiveness is for Everyone (An Analysis of The Prodigal Son) In the King James Version of the Bible, there is a parable told called the Prodigal Son. As this story is told in Luke 15:11-32, we are told of a story where a wealthy man has two sons. One son stays behind and decides to work for his father and inherit a good life beside him. The younger son decides he will ask for money from his father, and leave him behind. As time goes on, this son goes out into the world and shortly after, loses all of his money he had received from his father. Because of this, he is ashamed and takes his time on his way back home. But when he eventually does make it home, he is welcomed with open arms to a loving father who could not be any happier to see his son. Although the father is happy to see …show more content…
It can be so easy to take one simple look at someone and become so immune to the things in which we have. When it comes to jealousy, we can easily lose sight of the good in which we have inherited for ourselves. It is sad to watch someone only place themselves in worse situations due to their idea that other people have it better than them. It is often easy to desire to be exactly as someone else, which can damage your self image. Jealousy is so prideful, and can hurt one so easily. When the older son saw his brother and knew of the rejoicing that came with his homecoming, the Bible says, “And he was angry, and would not go in unto him: therefore came his father out, and entreated him” (line 28). When his father made the discovery that his older son was not accepting towards his younger brother, his father was very disappointed. He began to scold him, and tried reasoning with him. The father tried to point out that his brother was finally home and was no longer lost, trying to get his older son to realize the importance of the homecoming of his sibling, rather than focusing on himself
The Prodigal Son believed that he is “no longer worthy” (Luke 15:20) to be called his father's son after his actions. With this in mind, his father did the opposite of what the Prodigal Son thought that he would do and welcomed his son with open arms. Family love is shown through the actions of the Prodigal Son’s father as his father forgave his sons actions by welcoming him back into the family. Not only that, his father also offered everything he had. Although these two characters did not face the same situations, Sandra Cisneros and the Prodigal Son’s both showed examples of what family love was.
In the Bible, the parable of the Lost Son tells the story of how a father’s son “got together all he had, set off for a distant country and [squandered his wealth in wild living]. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. (New International Version Luke 15: 11-32) With nothing to eat, he had no choice but to return to his father in shame. The son was fearful his reputation with his father was ruined, and that he would be forced to work as a slave to his father. However, the father was cheerful he had returned and celebrated with a party. The son’s reputation was not ruined and was instead restored with his
As human beings we are often reluctant to let go of our anger and unwilling to forgive others. This becomes especially true in the case of loved ones or family members. The poem, “How Do We Forgive Our Fathers?,” written by Dick Lourie, addresses the different dilemmas associated with a child forgiving his/her father. In his six-stanza poem, the poet discusses how a child should forgive their father for traumatic events imposed on the child. This includes reasons for forgiveness, appropriate time to forgive, and whether or not to even forgive at all. Detailed through the different stanzas, the poem suggests that until one learns how to appropriately forgive another for wrongful behavior, they will never be able to let go of resentment and
The Parable of the Prodigal Son is extremely rich in meaning, especially in mercy. Mercy constitutes the center of Christian spirituality and of our life in Christ; it is a very clear and profound representation of the reality of the human being when he does not appreciate the goodness and love of God. The parable of the Prodigal Son presents the moment in which the youngest son moves away from the father in a selfish way, disregarding the goodness of the fatherly love, to begin an uncertain journey that he believes will bring him to fuller and more abundant life, and he departs in search for freedom and happiness.
The Parable of the Prodigal Son is from the King James Bible in the book of Luke, Chapter 15 Verse’s 11-32. It is a story about a man with two sons in which the younger son asked his father for all of the goods that he would inherit. After getting what he would inherit, he travelled on a journey to a far country and completely wasted everything that his father had given to him. When he had spent everything and became poor, there arose a mighty famine in the land and he began to be in want. So he returned to his father and said to his father that he was no longer good enough to be considered one of his sons, he thought that he should now be considered a servant rather than one of his children. He claimed that he had sinned against heaven and
Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner is an award-winning novel and considered one of today’s most popular, contemporary classics. The story is one of familiar themes such as loyalty, forgiveness, betrayal, love, and redemption. It follows the tale of Amir and how he must atone for his sins and find a way to “be good again” (Hosseini 2). The quintessential message of this book relies on the idea of second chances. Themes of redemption, betrayal, loyalty, and forgiveness are not only shown without doubt through this book, but are also common among many literary works and religions. Hosseini is successful in showing the significance of these themes throughout the novel.
To begin with, jealousy is a sin and it should not weigh on your heart. In the story “Cain and Abel” Cain was jealous of his brother. He was jealous of him because of the love that he was receiving from his parents and his father God. Abel received that love because he was kind and pure to his parents and even his jealous brother. Abel also gave his biggest sheep to God. Cain didn’t want to give him his best from his field because he was being selfish and he didn’t feel God deserved it. In the end, Cain became so angry that he killed his brother. He had to leave his town and move far away to start over. That was punishment to him because he was scared that people would see him and kill him for what he has done. In the story “Parable of the Prodigal Son” the older brother was jealous of his younger brother because his father threw him a party and bought him nice things. He was jealous because he was doing everything right for his father meanwhile his younger brother was being disobedient, using him for his money and going astray. He only returned when he ran out of money and needed him. He thought that his father would be upset with him but he was the opposite. The older brother felt like he was the one who deserved all of those things being as though he was doing right the entire time. In both of these stories, the jealous characters did not make it far at all. Jealousy is not a good thing to feel against others.
As I was reading the gospel of Luke I found many interesting people but the person that has inspired me the most was the father of the prodigal son. In Luke's parable of the lost son (15:11-32) we see that the younger of two sons asks his father for his shares of his belongings. After receiving his inheritance, he set on a journey to a distant land where he spent his money and lived lavishly. Soon he had used up all of his inheritance and the country struck famine. He found work but it was not working out. He decided to go back to his father, not as a son, but as a paid servant.
The parable of the prodigal son is the last of three parables about loss and redemption, after the parable of the Lost Sheep and the parable of the Lost Coin. When Jesus told this parable it was it was around the year 29-30 CE, and he was travelling from Bethany to Jerusalem. His audience were the scribes, who learned to read and write, and Pharisees who were political parties, a social movements, but they were complaining to Jesus that he associated with tax collectors and sinners who were the lowest of the low. They were becoming annoyed because these lower status people were coming to hear Jesus tell his parables. So Jesus decides to tell the two groups the stories about loss and
In church we learn about all the different parables that are told by Jesus in the Gospels. Although there are many parables, some stories stick out more to specific people due to the obstacles that one faces in their life. One of the parables that is most relatable to people is the parable of the prodigal son. Many people, especially those with siblings, understand how it feels to be treated like one of the brothers in this story. Whether it be accepted back into your home with open arms, or being jealous of the acceptance someone else gets.
Initially, from the Parable of the Prodigal Son questions boundaries between good parenting and spoiling your child. Within the parable, the son demands his inheritance from his father and the father without question gives him the large amount of money. To most people that would be seen more as spoiling their child rather than being a good parent. Personally I think that giving the child his inheritance was a bad idea knowing that the child would go a blow all the money.”
So how does Paul reference forgiveness in relation to the believers in Romans? I his commentary on Romans, Plumer states, “by nature every man is a sinner, and without divine grace no man is righteous in the sight of God…” and that “Paul here employs these verses in order to describe the universal depravity of the whole human race.” Every person on earth has fallen from the original intention of humanity and are flawed, thus needing forgiveness. Christ came to save the human race, by dying on the cross, taking the punishment deserved by everyone and offering forgiveness from sins. Because of people’s selfishness and pride however, they refuse this gift of forgiveness.
The prodigal in a way is comparable to Jesus Christ. The main issue is at hand is the father figure in the views of Christians. There are questions that have risen if the father figure is Jesus Christ, or even God the Father. If it is God, then it would make sense because of the unconditional love he gives his two sons, even when they sin. God grants mercy on everyone. He is always there with open arms when one sins waiting for them want forgiveness. In addition, the reason they believe Christians believe it could be Jesus is because in this specific parable Jesus does not appear. As well as, that the prodigal and Jesus their coming in common. Ultimately, the interpretation of the father figure in the parable symbolizing God, makes more sense. God is similar to the father because he is happy that his younger son who was lost has found his way back. In God’s eyes it would a believer finding his way back to the Kingdom after be astray for a while. While forgiveness and reconciliation are a massive part of the parable, the christian interpretation wants one to identify God in not only this parable, but all the parables. Even though the father was so happy to see his younger son, he threw him a feast without acknowledging the elder son, there is more to that. Jesus wanted to the reader to find herself or himself in one of the sons. He wants them to not only see, but to understand. The listener is
The parable, “Prodigal Son” from the King James Bible, has several flawed aspects that will be discussed.
Some examples of typology in the Prodigal Son are Joseph being lost and found by his family and Moses being lost and being found by his
