In church we learn about all the different parables that are told by Jesus in the Gospels. Although there are many parables, some stories stick out more to specific people due to the obstacles that one faces in their life. One of the parables that is most relatable to people is the parable of the prodigal son. Many people, especially those with siblings, understand how it feels to be treated like one of the brothers in this story. Whether it be accepted back into your home with open arms, or being jealous of the acceptance someone else gets. We learn from this parable how to become better people by learning to be more understanding to those who seek forgiveness. Nonetheless his foolish actions revealed his endless grace which opens the door of repentance and reconciliation, by forgiving debts and showing his son endless generosity. From a father's perspective, we can see that this dad was a failure. Not only did he raise two sons, but one on the outside was obedient, but on the inside was filled with rage and resentment, but also another that was out of control. He even obeyed what his son asked of him and gave his son his inheritance. We are not told why he agrees to give his son his inheritance, but we can assume that he felt there was no other way to control his son. So instead he just let his son go out and realize the errors of his ways on his own through the experiences that he faces. The father is definitely not a leader. Back during this time the people in leadership positions have been usually the leaders in the church. If you could not even control those in your house, then you were not able to try controlling those that are in your church. Also he is a disaster from the perspective of Jewish wisdom as well. Some time early in the second century BCE, Ben Sira gave the following …show more content…
We see how the younger son is an irresponsible wastrel who cares about no one but himself. Also, how the older brother is so self-righteously virtues and judgmental that he is a pain to have in the house. We can also see through our own life that God must see us the same way. We act without thinking about the wellbeing of others. We are so focused on our accomplishments that we do not see the harm we inflict on others. Or we we think that we are so righteous and that other people are the only ones that sin. We like the son sometimes do not notice the pain we inflict on others. we just want to feel pleasure and independence. We even allow that to take over. Or we just become so self absorbed like the older brother. We focus so much on being righteous that we do not even notice the things we have already been given, and instead we just focus on what we do not have. Then we see the father and realize that God wants him to show humility, love, and forgiveness. This is exactly what the father in the parable shows. But God gives more than the father in the parable does. He gives grace to the life-giving, to break the vicious circle of self-indulgence, self-righteousness and
In the first example that I read “Grace: God is the Clear River” by Taylor Gaston. God is your clear path when confronted with chaos. In having chaos you also have tragedy and within this tragedy you have Gods lighted path. Like the sun shines on the water. He is there to guide you through the darkness that you are experiencing. your paths in your life are the darkness and God is the sun shining on the water walking right alongside the side of you. As the man was fishing in the river his faith didn’t think that the fish were living in the water because he did not have faith that they could live in the dark, murky water. This murky water could be an example and a metaphor in talking about life and how we as humans can survive by having gods light to guide us. We have choices just like Adam and Eve took part in eating the apple off of the Tree of Life the fisherman had a choice to keep fishing. Just like we have in our own life to never lose our faith and give up on Gods light.
Things could have been different, if Nathan was a stronger leader not only in the church, but
The father and son also have comparisons in their character, they have similar characteristics when it comes to being sensible. An example of this is when, the boy and the man come across a cannibal's lair. In this they find people being prepared to be slaughtered and eaten. In this instance both the man and the son fight to get out of the lair. They both feel the same sense of danger and unease proving that they compare to each other. Another instance of this is when the boy and his father come across other survivors walking along the road with weapons and a pregnant woman. This chills both of the characters and they hide and wait for
The Prodigal Son believed that he is “no longer worthy” (Luke 15:20) to be called his father's son after his actions. With this in mind, his father did the opposite of what the Prodigal Son thought that he would do and welcomed his son with open arms. Family love is shown through the actions of the Prodigal Son’s father as his father forgave his sons actions by welcoming him back into the family. Not only that, his father also offered everything he had. Although these two characters did not face the same situations, Sandra Cisneros and the Prodigal Son’s both showed examples of what family love was.
This is very significant in this story, because the narrator also feels guilt for how his brother is turned out. We find out that the narrator had promised his mother to look after his brother but he abandons his brother in his time of need.
The father knows that his dream of knowledge and university will never be fulfilled, and consequently, tries to accomplish this goal through his children. In doing so, he also sacrifices his relationship with his wife who despises him and his “room and all it stood for” (MacLeod 266). They both try to maintain a positive atmosphere in the house, regardless of their differences, by working hard to raise their children. As the only boy in the family, the narrator idolizes his father and eventually begins to believe that “it was very much braver to spend a life doing what you really do not want rather than selfishly following forever your own dreams and inclinations” (MacLeod 274). As a result, the narrator promises to help and protect his father until he dies, and the father, in return commits to the ultimate sacrifice of death to set his son free. The author is showing that true love goes beyond life itself and that no sacrifice is too great for a parent in order to give their children the chance of a better life. By implementing the seed of knowledge in his children, the father knew that his sacrifice is not in vain,
Paul cautions us of the correct way to rescue our brother or sister, "Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently."

Ancient Greece has to offer some of the most interesting pieces of culture. Culture in Ancient Greece can be very similar and very, very different to our modern day society. Women roles in Ancient Greek culture were very limited at the time especially in Athens. In Athens women were only expected to have children but specifically male children. Women that were citizens of Athens could partake in some public functions and or religious groups but for the most part they were out casted from society.
The video begins by showing balls of a variety of colors after being tossed up slightly and beginning to bounce on a graduated blue surface. In the beginning, all the balls, which have a shadow as they bounce, seem to be bouncing in synchrony, are in clear focus, and are roughly the same size. However, as the video progresses, the color of the background continually changes and the shadows have seemingly disappeared. The balls are bouncing any which way, and seem to have spread out. The balls that have gravitated towards the back are blurry and small, while the ones in the front are of an increasingly large size and are in clear focus, so much so, that you can see a reflection off of their surface as they bounce off the camera. At the end of
Everybody sins, and we are no different. But unlike some churches, we believe that we are able to repent from the sin or sins we commit. The process we use is called the atonement, and it is the supreme expression of the love of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. We can feel this love after we repent, and it is also described as the grace of God or Jesus Christ. Christ loves us and wants us to come back to him, as Moses 1:39 states, it is his work and his glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
Parables are stories written in the Bible for truth and life guidance. We have to understand that parables are implied by God to encourage his written word and carry his truths. God’s words can touch a heart of faith despite their external circumstance. The history of parables started with Jesus writing “the sower and the seed” in the book of Matthew. The sower and the seed was the seed is “the word.” The hard ground represents the person who is hardened by sin. Parables date back as far as
The illness that afflicted the nobleman’s son shows us how weak, frail and mortal we are. Jesus’ healing of the man’s son shows us that we can be healed of our sins but only through Him are we saved. He shows that we can have eternal life through Him.
I choose not to read as much nonfiction as I should; I figure that I gain enough knowledge through textbooks and classes. The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen made me change my entire perspective of nonfiction. In the book, Nouwen (Dutch theologian and previous Catholic priest) analyzes Dutch painter Rembrandt’s work of the prodigal son. Nouwen separates his observations and theology into three sections, about the younger son’s repentance, the older son’s jealousy, and the father’s compassion. Nouwen’s purpose in writing this book was to offer a very detailed account on a popular biblical parable and to relate it to common problems that he reflects on a personal level. Nouwen’s manner of picturing each of the characters and relating
The parable of the Prodigal Son is one of the beloved stories in the bible. It is often interpreted, as a parable about second chances, however if you dissect the text carefully you would find the true meaning of the text. The purpose of this essay is to do just that, to analyze the parable of the Prodigal Son, which is found in Luke chapter fifteen verses eleven to thirty two. This will be done by first summarizing the story. Followed by highlighting certain points and themes in the story. Lastly this essay will analyze certain point’s implication.
