Final Reflection From reviewing and compiling my best work for my final portfolio, I have been able to reflect upon my growth and progress over the course of the semester and set goals for future writing development. I read through my free writes, writing journals, revision plans, reflection letters, drafts, and feedback, which gave me a realization of what came easier or was more challenging. I was able to see what I have already practiced in previous courses compared to new strategies and genres. I was able to see how language and structure changes and adapts as a result. Based on this, I will self-reflect and self-assess on my effort, engagement, and learning over the sixteen weeks of the course. Then set goals for future writing growth and development in my academic career.
As both a student and a writer this semester I have learned about the importance of co-creation of knowledge and the value time management, editing, and rewriting has on a finished product. I have learned how to write and express myself and how to think for myself. I learned how to free

Also, planning out the essay will help with focus, structure, and organization. I realized the I must balance problems with solutions. Furthermore, making sure I back up statements with evidence and finish with good analyzation. Concrete detail is better than having a lot of mumbo jumbo. Most importantly I realized that I tend to bounce around or be repetitive towards the end and that makes my writing difficult to follow for the reader. When editing I need to focus on sentence boundaries like run-ons and fragments. I noticed that when I provide essential background information and details on a subject while maintain a focus on the frame or overall message is when my writing is the easiest to read and comprehend. Unexplained terms and missing information makes lousy
Learning how to develop an outline before starting my essay is probably the biggest help. At the beginning, I thought you just start writing. I did not know to start with an outline. The outline helps me get my thoughts organized. I thought completing an outline would be redundant. Furthermore, the outline alone has improved my confidence.
The past two semesters were great experiences. Within this past school year my knowledge as a reader and writer has improved. It felt like it was just yesterday, when I had a lot of difficulty writing and poor reading strategies. Now, as I said before, I am an improved writer and reader. The assignments and class activities over the two semesters were great benefits to me, and helped me make progress towards the first year learning goals.
Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also learned a lot about writing that I hadn’t learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self-confidence and skills to take on the world on my own.
To begin, I am eager to receive critique and assistance regarding my writing. My hope is to develop into the best writer I can be. Having said that, fearful struck me the moment I registered for this course. Fearing that I would be expected to write essays, papers and that I would fall short in my abilities. Writing a narrative essay, reflective essay, or researching material for a persuasive essay is not something I had done. Fortunately, soon realizing that this is why I am returning to college. English Composition specifically, will guide me through the information that I need to study to become the best writer I can be. Receiving guidance is a necessary part of life, and in college, if I want to develop my skills, receiving analyzes and assistance is essential to my growth. Falling short is an opportunity to fix what is wrong. So my enthusiasm is in learning everything I possibly can to aid in my success.
My goals I have set for this class are to use this opportunity to strengthen my research, brainstorming, outlining, and editing skills. I understand that writing is a key concept, necessary to excel in my desired field of work. By the end of this class, I am confident that I will put in the work necessary to sharpen those
When I began this writing course, I was asked what I hoped to accomplish. I even wrote a reflective essay as a journal entry on the topic. Looking back at the essay and reading it again, I am struck by how much I have learned in such a brief time span. My initial concerns were surrounded in a perceived fear of academia. I was insecure in my ability to convey thoughts in a structured academic format. I still take time to consider these concerns. However, this course boosted my confidence in my ability to learn to write academically, and effectively.
Being a student in this course has taught me quite a bit about my writing process. I went in to this class hoping it would not be too big of a challenge. As it turned out, every part of this course has been a test for me. I have truly enjoyed learning everything I have in this class. The two learning objectives I gained the most from were developing strategies for evaluating others’ work and engaging in prewriting activities.
As a result of the thoroughness of this course in relation to the practice of writing about writing, I have learned a number of things that will be useful to me for the remainder of college and even beyond graduation. Through
This semester I was surprised by how much I actually learned and developed my writing skills. I was given the opportunity to learn the many steps that it is required to become a good writer. Writing requires a lot of work. It consists of various steps; prewriting, drafting, rewriting, proofreading and publishing. . All of these components are extremely important, and necessary, and will need to be follow to improve student’s writing.
This course has taught me more than I could imagine over the past few months. I have reached and surpassed many of the goals I set for myself and reached objectives I never thought possible because of this class. Despite my success and continued improvement over the course of the semester, there is still much room for my writing to grow.
Reflective Paper (Writing Portfolio) As I look back at the knowledge that I have gained from this course and to what I have accomplished in this class, I have discovered many different aspects of myself. One thing I learned is that I have become more of a thinker. I have learned to continuously ask the question "why" on many different levels. I have also learned to identify the different writing style.
The first improvement I saw was the wording I would use. At first, it may be dull, and there may be overused and bulky words, but as it winds down to the finished product, the wording seemed better to me. For example, no matter what I write, I would use general words like "things" or "some," but now I will stop myself and go back in the moment and elaborate. When I am reading through it, I will look at the essay as if someone else wrote it, and if I would question it usually, I fix it. While I may understand what a sentence means, another person may not understand what I am trying to get across to them. Furthermore, at first it was hard for me to find other words, but now it is almost like second nature.
In conclusion, I had a great time in this class. I have developed in my writing skills and the confidence I have in my writing abilities; this semester has taught me some key life skills that go past a simple English but skills that will be applied.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
