Reflective Paper (Writing Portfolio)
As I look back at the knowledge that I have gained from this course and to what I have accomplished in this class, I have discovered many different aspects of myself. One thing I learned is that I have become more of a thinker. I have learned to continuously ask the question "why" on many different levels. I have also learned to identify the different writing style. For me, Writing has always been one of my personal downfalls. I realized that it doesn’t matter if we love or hate writing, it does not determine our skills. There is room for improvement, even returning to school after 20 years, As long as you keep learning.
During the weeks in this class, I noticed that prepping for the assignments helped
There comes a time in life where we see an impossible obstacle, and do the best that we can to overcome it. For me, this was my AP English Language class in high school during senior year. The time was now, summer is nearly over. I analyzed my strengths and weaknesses, giving a full re-evaluation of myself. In the end, I consider myself an average writer. There have been times in the past when I’ve written letters or personal stories. However, those have never been my strongest set of skills. While I have been serious with my writing, I never recognized the unbelievable advantages that good writing has. Therefore, I’ve made it my goal to improve my literal skills and become a great writer. Maybe this new class will assist me in becoming that
As a freshman at Linden High School, I have learned that writing provides students with the necessary communication and thinking skills necessary to succeed in school. Before I enrolled in ACL, I was a lazy writer who detested every aspect of writing. Now, I have learned to embrace writing challenges and learn from my mistakes. Writing persuasive and research papers proved to be difficult for me because it required organizational and research skills. As the year progressed, I began feeling more confident in my writing skills and looked forward to expressing my ideas on paper. As a writer, I have gained the knowledge and tools to grow as a student.
When I restarted my college career to make sure as many opportunities in the corporate world would be available to me as possible, an English writing class was not where I wanted to begin. However, it was a requirement and I had no choice if I wanted to earn my college degree. Before taking this English class, I seldom wrote more than a general correspondence email or letter, and I never really thought about how well I wrote them, or were they even effectively written to convey the point I was trying to make. I was quite humbled by my grade on the second essays of this course. I thought I could write better than I actually can. This was an eye-opening experience that left me feeling like (knowing should I say) I am a sub-par writer.
My Reaction to Writing Professional freelance writer and writing teacher, Bakari Chavanu, claims, “As with any other skill (and art), writing takes practice” in her article, “7 Reasons Why Most People Find Writing Hard to Do.” I enjoy this quote because I used to struggle with writing; specifically, formal writing was the most difficult for me. Although stressful, Freshman Comp class has taught me how to do the following: use metacognition, research and cite textual evidence, strategize, and transition. At first, I was intimidated by the high expectations of this class and the transition into college-level writing.
Being a student in this course has taught me quite a bit about my writing process. I went in to this class hoping it would not be too big of a challenge. As it turned out, every part of this course has been a test for me. I have truly enjoyed learning everything I have in this class. The two learning objectives I gained the most from were developing strategies for evaluating others’ work and engaging in prewriting activities.
I have always been pretty successful in school; however, writing has always been one of my greatest weaknesses. The overwhelming pressure of coming up with what to say and how to say it is extremely stressful for me, and I typically give up on perfecting whatever assignment I am working on. Up until high school, my writing had accomplished just enough to pass me on to the next course. My experience at Savannah Arts Academy, however, inspired me to approach writing in a completely new way.
Writing has always been a tough subject for me. As long as I can remember, I struggled with reading which, reduced my ability to find words for writing. I tend to have awkward sentences and find it difficult to have my ideas flow from one to the other. I was nervous to take a college writing class but, I’m glad I started with Writing 95 because it has helped me prepare for Writing 121. Overall I feel like my reading and writing skills were high enough for this class because I found the work to be feasible. My work has improved from the beginning of the class and I feel more confident in my writing and reading skills.
This semester I was surprised by how much I actually learned and developed my writing skills. I was given the opportunity to learn the many steps that it is required to become a good writer. Writing requires a lot of work. It consists of various steps; prewriting, drafting, rewriting, proofreading and publishing. . All of these components are extremely important, and necessary, and will need to be follow to improve student’s writing.
I have never been passionate about writing, but I have always been a pretty good writer. I was always told that I wrote at a higher level through elementary school and throughout high school, I took two years of Honors English and two years of AP English. I did very well in those classes and usually received A’s on my papers. However, I have never loved writing and would often dread writing assignments.
Experiences with Writing Writing has always been an interest of mine, it’s what I enjoy doing during my free time. Although, I do feel like my writing has weakened with my senior year English class. I made the decision of taking the easy route with Film Analysis to get credit for an English class, in that class I only learned of cinematography and some new vocabulary words. In the class, there were only two movie reports throughout the entire school year other than that writing was never used. Before that, during my junior I wrote papers having to do with a lot of personal opinions and creative writing that I was excited to complete and think about.
Writing has been a part of my life since I was a young lad. I loved making up stories, writing them down, and then telling these stories to my family. My dreams were to become a writer one day, but those dreams were destroyed by my step-father. He would tell me that I would never succeed in writing and never make a career out of it. I moved on from writing at a young age and did not enjoy it growing up after that moment. Once I got into high school I did not learn much techniques on writing due to my 9nth and 10nth grade teachers never putting effort into teaching the students. They would put a movie on every day and just be on their phones for the most part. This way of teaching changed when I entered 11nth grade. My English teacher, Mr. Ho, was different than my previous teachers.
The sun is shining, the leaves are growing, the flowers are blooming, and your nose is running. Isn’t Spring sensational? Join me on a hike through this forest, and collect prudent notes of the wide variety of life as each species describes one of the five essays found in my College Composition I Portfolio. Perhaps you will fancy one form of life more than another, but all are capable of stimulating reflection and inspiration.
Over the course of this trimester, I’ve learned more about myself as a writer, than in the past three years of high school English classes combined. Prior to the class, my writing was sufficient but stagnant. I wasn't growing as a writer because I didn’t feel the need to. I saw writing as a timed objective, something to be completed as swiftly as possible. Since I had always received high grades on my
Upon entering this writing course, I had thought I wouldn’t be a better writer than I was. I know my writing habits still need improving, but I can tell that I have improved since I graduated from high school. You can only go up in progress, you only fail when you stop trying. I keep that saying in my head to help push myself to become a better writer. In time, being able to write in a proper way will carry out the result I want.
Writing has always been something I dread. It’s weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It’s almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It’s not that I think I’m a “bad writer,” I just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don’t think highly of my writing skills. When I was little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it’s
