On a shift one day to shower the client in her flat, she find it very difficult to transfer from her wheelchair to her shower chair. She asked me to give her a bit of time to transfer. I asked her the cause of her disability and she told me she had multiple sclerosis many years ago. When she was talking to me about her condition I did not interrupt her by asking too many questions even though it was the first time of hearing about the disease. Egan (2014) emphases that it important for healthcare professionals not to ask too many question when talking to a client because clients might feel interrogate and that will not help out the relationship. Whiles communicating with the client I made sure to maintain eye contact and nodding of my head to show that I was listening to what she was telling me. Egan (2014) highlighted that turning into others shows and makes them feel that you are with them. Whiles communicating with the client realise she became upset because she used to be a nurse and felt bad about her current situation. I walked closer to her and put my hands around her shoulders to calm her down. Many complaints to the NHS are attributed to poor communication. Effective communication is reliant on the nurse working in partnership with the patient. It is essential that the nurse establishes a rapport and most of this will be achieved through the use of facial expressions. In my practice, it is important that develop a therapeutic relationship with the patients so that they can be able to put their trust in me. The therapeutic relationship is solely to meet the needs of the patient. In this relationship, there is a rapport established from a sense of mutual understanding and trust. To build a good nurse-patient relationship, I would have to show qualities of empathy, caring, sincerity and trustworthiness. During practice, if I am approaching a patient and the patient looks anxious, I should approach with empathy.
Each nurse also has specific ideas or beliefs about what information should be communicated during a verbal report. Valuable information may not be provided or may be forgotten (Casey & Wallis, 2011). Writing information down may help a nurse recall the data later, but if there is no consistent format for recording the information, it may be lost regardless. Interruptions, distractions, and the frequency of communications also may negatively effect the communication process and contribute to a nurse forgetting to share important information (Cacolice-Hildebrand, 2008).
