The essay will discuss about elements of communication. There are several elements of communication but I will be discussing about paraphrasing and opened ended questions in this essay. The essay will also talk about the positive and negative aspects and examples of open and paraphrasing will be discussed. Also, the essay will compare open and close questions it advantages and disadvantages and evidence find by researchers will be demonstrated, example of both will be given when working in the health settings to demonstrate self-awareness and empathy. On a shift one day to shower the client in her flat, she find it very difficult to transfer from her wheelchair to her shower chair. She asked me to give her a bit of time to transfer. I asked her the cause of her disability and she told me she had multiple sclerosis many years ago. When she was talking to me about her condition I did not interrupt her by asking too many questions even though it was the first time of hearing about the disease. Egan (2014) emphases that it important for healthcare professionals not to ask too many question when talking to a client because clients might feel interrogate and that will not help out the relationship. Whiles communicating with the client I made sure to maintain eye contact and nodding of my head to show that I was listening to what she was telling me. Egan (2014) highlighted that turning into others shows and makes them feel that you are with them. Whiles communicating with the client realise she became upset because she used to be a nurse and felt bad about her current situation. I walked closer to her and put my hands around her shoulders to calm her down. According to (Riley, 2016) empathy makes the client aware that you are with them which put the client in a position that you are listening carefully to their worry. (Hargie,2011).Paraphrasing is very essential in therapeutic relationship in the healthcare settings when used well. Some of the benefits of paraphrasing are that it enables the nurse to listen to client and not to misinterpret what they have said. It also helps the nurse operate from within the client support of situation and demonstrate empathy. It also make known attention in membership with the client. According to Orbe and Bruess (2000) a great listener is the person who is able paraphrase without adding words of his own. Reflecting in paraphrasing helps the client to feel understood which shows that the clients concerns are important and respected when communicating with the nurse. (Burleson,2003). Adler and Rodman (2008) found that negative effects in working relationship happens when the nurse repeatedly ask questions when communicating with the client and might lead to frustration. (Hargie, 2011). A nurse repeating more of what the client have said will alert the client that the nurse hasn’t listened attentively.
