Evidence-Based Writing Strengths

The first chapter of the MLA Handbook covers the very professional and rather mechanical process of writing a research paper. It begins by identifying the different types of research and the important skills developed by creating these types of papers. It then dives into the actual process of writing, beginning with the selection of your topic and suggests that the subject matter should interest you throughout the entirety of the writing process. A major chunk of this chapter is dedicated to exploring different research methods and sources, making sure you are aware of all of the information that is available. It also stresses the importance of using credible sources and keeping track of which ones you’ve used, creating your working bibliography.

According to the MLA Handbook, the in-text citation of MLA documentation style is inserted in the body of the paper to indicate the source of information that was used. Brief in-text citation direct the reader to more complete information in the works-cited list.

Need for MLA formatting reflection and improvement. In her brief feedback the professor highlighted a need for MLA formatting improvement. This is an admitted weakness of mine as the format is rarely used in my chosen profession. This task is even more difficult due to years of professional writing in Army correspondence style. The old adage of “practice makes perfect” is the best course of action to improve this skill for academic improvement. The AMU library as well as the provided course materials will likely be the best locations for demonstrated works with proper formatting. These resources will be instrumental in my continued improvement and renovation as a writer.

There comes a time in life where we see an impossible obstacle, and do the best that we can to overcome it. For me, this was my AP English Language class in high school during senior year. The time was now, summer is nearly over. I analyzed my strengths and weaknesses, giving a full re-evaluation of myself. In the end, I consider myself an average writer. There have been times in the past when I’ve written letters or personal stories. However, those have never been my strongest set of skills. While I have been serious with my writing, I never recognized the unbelievable advantages that good writing has. Therefore, I’ve made it my goal to improve my literal skills and become a great writer. Maybe this new class will assist me in becoming that

MLA format is something I have always kind of needed help with. Until this semester for some reason I could never really cite my sources that well. Its something I knew how to do, but when it came time to do it my mind went blank. When you went over everything on the bored that helped me so much (also because I took notes), but only because you told us to take them. With MLA format I learned that when quoting, if its more than three lines you have to use block quote. I didn’t know that till I got to this class.

In my personal opinion, I think it is essential that we use the MLA format. First of all, citations "give credit to authors whose works you have used (whether you quote them or not)" [Bailey/Howe Library]. For example, imagine what it would be like to spend months writing an essay that you put all your effort into -- this essay is your one and only shot you have to pass English. Someone takes your essay and hands it in as theirs. It is infuriating and unfair to the writer to have their ideas and effort taken without credit. Additionally, as stated by Judy Hunter, "academics need to be able to trace the genealogy of ideas" [Hunter, 2]. Schools need to be able to figure out how your ideas were created and developed from the first second you started

My writing skills have fluctuated throughout the semester. I feel, although, I have mastered leads and headline writing. Leads and headlines were the first writing skills we practiced and have continued to practice throughout the entire semester. The continuous practice of leads and headline writing throughout the semester, I feel confident in my ability to write concise, eye-catching leads and headlines. For writing assignment three I needed to provide a follow-up headline and corresponding lead for a criminal case. The headline had to focus on the upcoming sentencing hearing because it was the newest information about the case. In order to do so, as I mention in my blog entry, I had to write several drafts for both my headline and lead. [INSERT BLOG PICTURE] After many drafts of the lead I settled on a summary-lead because the article was a follow-up story about an established criminal case. I wrote the headline after I wrote the lead because the headline had to be a shorter, more intriguing version of the lead. After many drafts I finally wrote a six worded, eye-catching headline that was about the sentencing hearing. [INSERT WRITING ASSIGNMENT

The last writing project I did was an Argumentative. I choose to write and argue about the television and its effects on children. What the consequences are on playing violent/aggressive video games in young ages. Using credible sources and prove by evidence I could convince my reader about my opinion. In this paper I had to be fare and show both sides of the subject to give the reader a reliable opinion. The most important thing I learned was how to use all the sources and present them in the text. Using MLA format was something new and different for me. I realized the importance of presenting the sources in the correct format to keep the high credibility in my paper. I also understood that the MLA-format is very useful for paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting in my text.

As a writer, I feel that my weakness is struggling with time management and trying to get my best draft as my first draft. I have always struggled with trying to put forth the best draft on the first one and just making little adjustments and then turning the paper in. Another weakness I have is to over complicate my writing and over think submitting the final draft. Every single essay that I have had to write throughout this semester I have struggled with these problems. Particularly the research paper, since the paper was worth such a big percentage of the grade in the class. I was extremely self-conscious about submitting and writing the paper. I took a long time just to finish a rough draft. I reviewed the final draft for hours before submitting the paper. I also experienced the problem of being extremely self-conscious after I submitted the paper and question everything I choose to write on.

MLA style also specifies guidelines for formatting manuscripts and using the English language in writing and also provides a writers with a system for cross-referencing their sources--from their parenthetical references to their works cited page. This cross-referencing system allows readers to locate the publication information of source material. This is of great value for researchers who may want to locate your sources for their own research projects. The proper use of MLA style also shows the credibility of writers; such writers show accountability to their source material. Most importantly, the use of MLA style can protect writers from accusations of plagiarism--the purposeful or accidental use of source material by other writers

I always thought that my writing skills were pretty good until I started this class. It has been thirteen years since I graduated high school and I quickly realized that I had a lot of “refreshing” to do as far as writing papers. I actually felt very discouraged when I took the grammar test and did not score very well. I knew that I had to dedicate myself and put a lot of effort into this class to really improve. The practice quizzes were a major help to refresh on everything I must have forgotten since high school. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should master. Writing is such a major part of communication in this day and age so being able to write an intelligent paper will benefit you not just through school but also through life. Overall, I believe my strengths have definitely outgrown these weaknesses and have led to a better, more high-quality writing process which leads to improved essays.

Through this paper the author wants to persuade the employer to sponsor a workshop for all employees to improve their writing skills, to increase business communications and to avoid arguments through poor communication.
