One in five women has visited a Planned Parenthood in their lifetime. Planned Parenthood was founded in 1916 by Margaret Sanger, her sister, and their friend. In the early 1900’s there was a law forbidding any contraceptive, or abortion. This prompted Sanger to open a clinic where women could get the services they needed, legal or not. Planned Parenthood’s main goal is to provide affordable health care and contraceptives. Planned Parenthood is a necessity because they help to prevent unplanned pregnancy, give Papanicolaou tests and breast exams, and offer tests and treatments for STI’s. Planned Parenthood provides affordable services to protect against unplanned pregnancy. Planned Parenthood provides many different forms of contraceptives. One of the most common forms of contraceptives is condoms. Condoms are called “barrier contraceptives” because they are external blockades. Planned Parenthood also provides birth control. There are many different types of birth control such as: the birth control pill or patch, the depo-shot, the birth control sponge, the vaginal ring, and many other options. A pap test is better known as a “pap smear” and it checks for cervical cancer. During a pap smear the physician collects a sample of cells from a woman’s cervix. Then the cells are placed on a microscope and examined for abnormalities that could be an indication of cervical cancer. A breast exam is done by a physician when a physician feels a person’s breast and underarm area to search for any abnormalities that could be an indication of breast cancer.
