Founding of Interest Group
Planned Parenthood was founded in 1916 by Margaret Sanger, her sister and her friend. It all started when they opened America’s first birth control clinic in Brooklyn, New York. Women didn’t have very many rights back then so it was hard to obtain information on birth control or contraception. the Comstock Laws were responsible for making contraception illegal. They decided to make a change and start Planned Parenthood. Sanger decided to open the clinic because she had seen the pain of her mother having 18 pregnancies, bore 11 children and died at the age of 40. She wanted to help the other women who were having unwanted pregnancies to have a form of prevention. Sanger keeps on fighting though and founds The Birth

Although, you can get involved in some activities that they are doing. We attract people to be interested in volunteering by showing the statistics (ex: teen pregnancy rates) and what they stand for. They are people involved and spread their ideas by using free incentives such as, if you are eligible for Medicaid and get enrolled, you can come to Planned Parenthood for birth control and annual well-woman exams covered for free. These services are free with the exception that you must use one of these many insurance plans; Aetna, CareFirst Bluechoice, Group Hospitalization & Medical Services, Inc.,HealthKeepers, VA Medical Assistance Program. We have health centers that are available to everyone in most areas and provide information on many health care and pregnancy issues. On our website, you can look up the closest health care center to you. This year we have opened ten brand new Planned Parenthood health centers. These health centers have been strategically placed in areas that are lacking health care services needed. These health centers have provided women with 400,870 breast exams and counting. This is an example of one way to show your support for Planned Parenthood and a way of showing membership, or the closest thing to it by using our services. All of the things stated above are benificial things you can get from supporting Planned …show more content…
We are especially focused on are young female adults and 3rd world countries who tend to have higher unplanned pregnancies and STI rates. Our interest group is interested specifically in attracting women ages 15 to 44 to prevent unwanted pregnancies. You can see this through our ads. Most of our ads are aimed at ending teen pregnancy. This means that we will aim to show ads at times and on channels that attract that kind of audience. These ads aren’t promoting people to join Planned Parenthood though they are more informational. We also have all the information of our upcoming activities on our website and you can sign up for “action alerts” which is an email newsletter that automatically updates and notifies you about our interest group’s activities. If you don’t want to sign up for the “action alerts”, you can also get your information from their many social media accounts. We have active use of Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube and Instagram which are constantly updated with pictures and information of fundraisers and other special events. Our interest group has specific social media accounts for different types of people and purposes, for example was have a Twitter account for the Planned Parenthood Black Community and a Facebook specifically for the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Planned ParentHood offers services to the general public, low income persons, women, adolescents/youth/teens. There are many ways Planned Parenthood advertises their services so here are a few of them, billboards and television advertisements as well as an internet presents. Some states oppose Planned Parenthood because of the services it offers to individuals. Some clients may not be able to afford the services offered at Planned Parenthood. There are no barriers to services offered to individuals other than self-imposed ones. The facility is well maintained and clean both inside and out. Staff are professional, friendly and willing to help out with questions. Planned Parenthood offers Spanish, English as well as an interpreter service
The first argument for supporting Planned Parenthood is that it provides women with other health services and not just birth control or abortion. Without these services, women’s health will decline because many people can afford treatment. “Every year, Planned Parenthood’s doctors and nurses provide more than 3 million women with preventive health care, including nearly one million lifesaving screenings for cervical cancer, 830,000 breast exams, contraception to nearly 2.5 million patients and nearly four million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Literally, they are a trusted health care provider to millions of women (Whitman).” The statistic proves that Planned Parenthood does more than prevent unwanted pregnancy but also take on tasks care for women’s health.
Planned Parenthood is a “non-profit organization that provides sexual health care in the United States and globally” (Plannedparenthood.org). This includes supplying birth control and contraceptives, testing and treating STDs, and giving abortions. Planned Parenthood has received funding since Nixon in the 1970s when he amended the Public Health Service Act, but recently uproar around the idea of the government funding of Planned Parenthood started (Our History, Planned Parenthood.org).
The most interesting thing I learned about the history of reproductive control in the United States from the readings is the fact that throughout it’s history, the support or lack of support of Planned Parenthood has been largely impacted by what is going on in the world around it, rather than the essence of what Planned Parenthood stands for. For example, in Jill Leopre’s article “Birthright: what’s next for Planned Parenthood?” she talks about how the economic status of the United States has affected how much support Planned Parenthood has received. She says, “During the Depression, when more and more people were interested in having fewer children, Gallup polls found that three out of four Americans supported the legalization of contraception.”
Someone of the female gender can suffer quite a bit when it comes to health. Infections come easier, breast cancer, cervical cancer, etc. They also help provide contraception, HIV screening, and counseling for those that need it. With the help of Planned Parenthood, women know their bodies better and know how to take better precautions. They are not living in ignorance about their body. Even if a woman did not go in to get checked, they would always have the option. Without the organization, this would not be an option. Those that could not afford going into another hospital would have to deal with it. That could have long-lasting results; death being one of
For example, in the summer of 2015, the Non-profit supported a coalition in Nicaragua that brought partners expertise in strategic ligation and media/communication expertise to further raise the awareness of early pregnancies and safe abortions. Furthermore, Planned Parenthood Global also advocates for sound U.S. foreign policies that improve the sexual and reproductive health and well-being of individuals and families globally (Planned Parenthood,
Planned Parenthood is a controversial topic sweeping the nation of America with political and moral issues. Every day one could come across a new article on it, stubble upon a news article in their local paper or even on their local news station. Planned Parenthood directly provides reproductive health services, is involved in teach young students about sexual education, contributes to research in reproductive technology, and interacts with legal and political efforts aimed at protecting and developing reproductive rights.
One in eight women in the United States develop breast cancer in their life. One in five sexually active teens has herpes. Three in ten sexually active teen girls become pregnant before age twenty. All of these statistics are shocking, but what is more disturbing is that they can typically be spotted or prevented if given access to the proper outlet, tools, and information. The epidemic that should frighten people is the plague of misinformation or ignorance to knowledge that could prevent these occurrences, or the lack of drive to find information regarding these unfortunate instances. Planned Parenthood offers a range of services that include screening for breast cancer to women, sexually transmitted disease testing to
Central Idea: Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides essential health services to both men and women.
As stated underneath the mission of the Planned Parenthood website, “Planned Parenthood is proud of its vital role in providing young people with honest sexuality and relationship information in classrooms and online to help reduce our nation’s alarmingly high rates of teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Planned Parenthood
When getting the word on the street I had to keep an open mind to what I would find. Whether it be the ravings of mad men or the opinion of politicians, there is always a story to be found if you take the time out to ask someone about their day. Lucky for me I found two willing individuals that were willing to share their views on the public literacy practices of Planned Parenthood and their participation with the organization. What endeared me to this practice was that it literally screams to me first amendment and I dare you to stop me. Having read their responses, I have found that there are a multitude of ways one can advocate for their cause. They, along with thousands of other supporters, made a stand to have their voices heard. Reviewing the work Planned Parenthood does, I find the support they have amazing.
Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides healthcare and education to both men and women, having over 650 health centers that provide healthcare to countless communities around the world. Shockingly, 78% of those who use Planned Parenthoods services live at or below 150% of the federal poverty line, showing how important this organization is to low-income families (Topulos, Greene, Drazen). Their mission statement is “A Reason for Being”, which is shown through their efforts to provide health care, advocate public policies, create educational programs, and endorse research. There are those who do not believe Planned Parenthood should be funded by the government, though, due to the fact that they provide abortions to women in need. Studies show that the effects of not having Planned Parenthood available are disastrous, causing low-income families to lack a healthcare provider and the number of those who are infected with STD’s and STI’s to rise. The biggest concern communities have about the government defunding Planned Parenthood is the effects that it would have on low-income families who would no longer have access to something that many people take for granted: health care. Although many believe that Planned Parenthood mostly provides abortions, in reality, only 3% of the people that seek help from them receive an abortion, while 97% receive affordable and, in many cases,
Onto scarcity. Planned parenthood helps young women, young adults and basically just women all together. To have a program specifically for women is, I think, the scarcity and why so much money has gone towards that specific
As a way to strengthen my skills as a community organizers and activist, I attended a volunteer training event hosted by Planned Parenthood for those interested in fighting for reproductive rights on a political level. I and 13 other volunteers met to learn about Planned Parenthood’s community organizing tactics and some of the success gained from past collaborations. We learned how community organizing, as seen during the 2013 filibuster against the Texas abortion bill, can make a big enough impact to influence those not involved in the movement to join. After our discussion, we all took turns to share our experiences with community organizing and how it influenced us to be involved with the women’s reproductive rights efforts. Lastly the
When, where, and why was it founded? Planned Parenthood was founded in 1916 in Brooklyn, NY by Margaret Sanger. It was originally a birth control clinic but it adopted its name “Planned Parenthood” in 1942. Sanger was an advocate for birth control and wanted to get rid of federal and state laws that prohibited information about sexuality, contraception and human reproduction
