How I Have Improved as a Writer Ever since I started attending Mrs.Kigar’s 1st hour Senior Comp. class, my writing skills have expanded into a new level. I learned a lot about writing for example; before this class I had never heard of parallelism and didn’t know the impact it had on writing. Another part of my stylistic learning was learning about transitions, semicolons, commas, and apostrophes. I also wrote almost every different style of paper too which really helps in improving the ability to write. One thing I have improved on is using sophisticated vocabulary in my papers. For example, from my compare and contrast paper I wrote I said, ‘The boxer engine also gives the exhaust a much better sound, which is more dulcet to the ear.”(Consolla, 1) This is a prime example of sophisticated vocabulary use in my papers. Dashes have come to be very confusing for some people, but after reading …show more content…
Writing journals helps with flow and consistency. Before this class I could never write about a topic for 300 words. Whenever I had to write a paper, I would always draw to a blank and never get anything done. Thanks to writing journals I have improved on my flow and consistency to write stuff down. Some people didn’t like the movie we watched earlier in the semester, The Words; but I thought it was a excellent movie. I thought it was the perfect movie to write a movie review on. I really like movies and enjoy watching them and criticizing them, but I had never known the write way to do it. The movie review essay really helped to improve my writing ability. The writing ability of me, Jack Consolla, has improved quite well throughout the semester. I have written almost every single type of essay and have gone into detail about them and have also gone into detailed stylistic learning about grammar uses. I feel as if I’m more ready for college and can’t wait to get the ball
Reflecting as a writer and thinker I have noticed tremendous improvements in my work. My whole thought process and way of viewing topics has changed, giving me a better understanding when I write. In the beginning of the term I ran into many problems in College Writing I for instance, I was not too familiar with writing in MLA format and struggled reaching the page count. I found myself to procrastinate when papers were assigned making my anxiety levels increase. Despite my struggles as a writer and thinker, I learned how to overcome these obstacles. I learned to be open minded and looking at topics from another perspective.
Thanks to Comp, my therapist refused to keep seeing me (Just kidding... she stopped seeing me in 9th grade). While that statement is a logical fallacy because correlation does not imply causation, Comp has helped me improve as a writer and as a person. In the one hundred thirty-three days that I have been a Comp student, my writing has improved quite a bit since junior year. Not only have I learned to write faster and better, I have grown as a student, reader, writer, and thinker. Thanks to Comp, while I do not see my therapist anymore, Comp is essentially my therapy.
Here's a sample of an essay which reviews a film. It was written by Adrienne who took this class several years ago.
The beginning of my junior year seems like it was such a long time ago. This may be because of how much I have grown since the start of the year. When I began AP English, my writing skills needed improvement. For instance, I often used incorrect grammar and struggled with staying on topic. In just one semester, my writing has improved immensely. The more than I write, the more I learn about how to craft a good paper. I have worked on improving my grammar, using rhetoric, addressing my subject, and many more elements of writing. In addition to improving my writing, I have gained many skills to become a better student. I have learned about effective study techniques and time-management skills that allow me to be the most successful. Since I always try my best, I know that over time I will continue to grow in my studies. This year I have gained countless skills that will help me succeed in English in the future.
As for college so far this year, my writing has improved. English 101 has taught me more about developing my papers than what I previously knew about writing. Revision is an important part when finalizing any of my papers. As I wrap up writing each essay, going back over it to make sure that it all the readers will understand the point of the paper. As this semester comes to an end, I am able to gain insight of structure through the significance of the PIE format, more organized ideas, and rereading sentences with correct use of grammar.
I have never been an excellent student and perennially struggled with English, Math, and Science growing up. These subjects would cast a pall over my day and school work. Anxiety would well up inside of me which often resulted with me passed out across my desk sleeping through parts of class. When I would return home at day’s end, I rarely completed my homework. When I did try to complete homework, it often ended in tears of frustration or the hurling of a book across the room. Taking this class has helped to quell a portion of that anxiety and frustration. It was a grueling class, seemingly impossible at times, but taking this class has given me the confidence to know that not only can I finish the class if I work hard but can also excel! Writing is something that I will exercise throughout my college curriculum and my life. It will help to convey my ideas to the instructor, peers, bosses, and co-workers. In my college curriculum, it will also show my instructors that I’m learning the information provided and how to apply that knowledge appropriately. It will allow me to complete assignments, discussions, and reports, and I will also apply writing in basic communication when necessary.
The journals I have written came from my four years of high school English. Everyday I came to class there would be a topic on the board. I took five minutes each day to write about the given topic. It was brainstorming and giving our input on whatever the topic was. I think
Throughout my academic years roughly until my senior year in highschool I wasn’t the best writer. I lacked in several areas such as grammar, organization and substance. With the help of my senior english teacher and you, Professor McGee I have grown immensely. I have excelled in freshman composition, receiving mainly A’s on most of my papers. Professor McGee has helped me gain diction, structure and grammar skills along with plenty other elements that will all in all help my writing in the future once this class is over.
Writing is a key in everyday life, whether it is going unrecognized or not communication is largely dependent on writing rater then face to face relations. Growing up writing an essay or a story wasn’t always as important as sending that one text out to a friend. Many times instead of working on an assignment people tend to text, and write on social media instead. Although by doing this in the end, you are still writing, although for some it doesn’t count as that text maybe something they are passionate about unlike their assignment. The concept of writing then goes unacknowledged and isn’t looked at as a fun activity for many. This tends to happen after submitting assignments and not receiving the grade you may
I don’t consider myself a very good writer. I write when I am made to or when I have something that I need to say that I can’t just tell someone. I keep a diary. Usually my diary is just a record of what I have done that day. It’s not so much about my feelings. I don’t really like talking about my feelings, usually because most of the time I am confused about what exactly I am feeling. I tend to keep the feelings that I do have to myself, to protect myself from getting hurt.
The journals helped me to enhance my writing skills by making me write about my personal life, strengths, and goals. Through these journals I was able to understand which are my strengths and weaknesses and found places where I could apply them. This class with its numerous topics encouraged me to write more freely and made me appreciate writing even more. Based on that we had to describe our personal life in detail as well as all of our goals and how we planned to achieve them. Throughout the course, I enjoyed writing the journals because we were able to express our ideas without any fear of being
When composing an essay, or journal entry, or just plain writing, I struggle as a writer with avoiding awkward or wordy phases in my written work. This struggle is yet again based on last year’s experience and feedback from my English class. Improvement with this struggle can be made by the following strategies: reading over my paper more carefully, avoiding the use of words that sound intelligent but don’t flow with the paper, and editing my paper with peers. Recognizing this struggle and following these strategies would improve my writing.
Throughout this semester there are many skills that I have noticed have improved through the constant writing of essays for this class. The one that I find most noticeable is a habit I had long struggled with which was essentially my tendency to be over necessarily wordy when writing my essays. I believe that I was able to somewhat fix this subconsciously, just by knowing that I was no longer in high school, and could no longer get by with just attempting to fill up my word count. I also believe I have greatly improved in my topic selection. In high school I would throw caution to the wind and just pick whatever topic came to mind just in an effort to get it done. I have been much more calculated in college, and I believe that it has helped me write better essays. While these were the
As the semester comes to a close, it is always interesting to look back and reflect on the events and opportunities my English class has given me throughout my first semester as a whole. At the beginning of this semester it was evident that I was feeling uncomfortable due to the adjustment that I was going through as a student moving to college. It was very difficult expressing myself through my writing since I was nervous about good impressions and my good grade. While this class was one of the most difficult courses that I have taken this far, it has become quite evident to me that I have grown a substantial amount as a writer and as a person; Especially, when it came to explaining my ideas, writing academic essays, and making arguments.
Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread. My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer.
