I share some of the characteristics of a great leader while others I identify and work to strengthen. I can apologize, admit when I am wrong, handle criticism, and learn from my mistakes. I enjoy the opportunity to listen with an open mind to the other side of the issue. Organizing and taking charge are strengths that I use with my classmates during projects, in social activities with friends, and with my teammates in sports. One book was Do Not Pass Go by Kirkpatrick Hill. Deet’s father is jailed for drug use. Angry, hurt and ashamed, Deet faces his fears and sees the prisoners as people with their own stories just like his dad has. I feel it is easy to judge people especially those in jail and with my father being a police officer. It made me realize there is always someone going through a more difficult situation, have compassion and do not judge. The other book was The Leadership Moment: Nine True Stories of Triumph and Disaster and Their Lessons for Us All by Michael Useem. In chapter 2, Wagner understood the severity and acted quickly in changing the plan accordingly. However, Wagner lacked communication and lost the confidence of his men. 2. What are the traits of an effective leader? How can these traits be developed?
A leader is a person who has the ability to lead or command an entire group of people, a leader is someone who is followed by other people. Being a leader is a wonderful privilege, it is something that is not necessarily handed to an individual nor is it something that can be bought, leadership is something that is earned. This entire course we have been learning about and discussing various characteristics of effective leaders. The other quality of a leader that I exhibit is hard work and dedication. I do my best to make each assignment or activity I do the best it can possibly be. I only ever miss school, practice or work if I have no other option available to me, and when I do miss, I try to make up my work as quickly as I can. Since childhood, I had a chance to develop my leadership and organizational skills through sports and had my school team win many competitions. I have many different qualities that attribute to my character. Some including, I am a naturally positive person, I am non-judgmental, and I try my best to be focused and efficient. In my reflections as I prepared to write this paper, I came to the realization that leadership is much more complex especially since the paper requires that I focus on a few traits. In an effort to make it simple, I wrote down the traits that came to mind and in process had over 10 important traits but an even bigger challenge was on how to narrow them down to 3 or 4 and this is the place that required a good deal of reflection. Eventually, however, I had to prioritize them since in any case; it is not possible to get a leader that has all the traits. As I thought of the various leaders who have inspired me, I noticed that while they strived to provide the best leadership by focusing on their strong points, they still had their weaknesses. To me this provided a justification for at least identifying key desirable traits and thereafter working to improve them. I did manage to settle on four traits, which for me are indispensible if a leader or a leadership is to become effective.
In presenting a theory about myself as a leader, I will attempt to draw conclusions about my strengths and weakness as a leader based on the things learned in this class. I will speculate on a reflective leadership best-self-portrait through my work experiences that draw on my interpersonal resources for vision. Recognizing my talents and shortcomings will help develop both micro and macro levels of resource development needed to reach my full potential.
They were powerful. He had been able to provide a moment of comfort in a difficult time for most of the students. He is a leader who expresses an immense care for the students at the school but still knows how to maintain his business like demeanor. His ability to shape his behavior and emotions to the atmosphere of a situation or environment is impressive. I want to be a leader that others can depend on and seek help from , feel comfortable with, respect, and that can stand up for others. Throughout the course of this project I was able to gain a better understanding of my strengths and how I am perceived when I am at my best. Asking the people that have historically been the closest to me was easy, it was difficult, and even a little awkward, asking the ones who I have not been extremely close with. I was very pleased about the responses I received and the promptness in which people responded. Many of the stories had more than three qualities that I exemplified, but the three that were commonly referred to were my leadership skills, my charisma, and my inclusivity.
