College Application Let me just say " who knew that ADHD and Dyslexia could make me a stronger and better person. " Nevertheless, these learning challenges have made me the strong confident person I am today. These learning obstacles have taught me patience, perseverance, and great time management. ADHD and Dyslexia has taught me to be a patient person. It has made me realize that with patience, I will be able to become a better learner, reader and writer. I sometimes get really frustrated while performing these tasks. I did, however overcome these struggles with the help that I found was suitable for me. It taught me to keep pushing and to work hard and never give up. For example, I would stay up at night and practice my essay writing and reading, that way I would not be behind academically. Additionally, I would work on my spelling and punctuation, whenever I had the time to do so. As a result, my skills got better and brought me up to par! ADHD and Dyslexia have made me great at time management. I try to get assignments handed in on time, and complete tests with the limit allotted. Not to mention, I would use a timer when doing assignments, this would help me in setting a goal for myself to get my assignments done as efficiently as possible. In the essay “On Being Seventeen, Bright, and Unable to Read,” David Raymond offers information on him having the experience of dyslexia. He explains how dyslexia plays a major role in his learning. In a positive and negative way. Dyslexia doesn’t only stop him with other educational activities but effects his self-confidence. While dyslexia brought Raymond many struggles as a child, it also played a huge role in Raymond’s confidence such as him saying that he wanted to die since he was different to everyone else. I’m a senior at the University of South Carolina Upstate and have been diagnosed with dyslexia since childhood. This label could have caused for a disastrous college experience, but there has always been something in myself pushing beyond the stigma.
However, I refuse to let it hold me back. English homework that takes classmates thirty minutes to do takes me twice as long. When teachers ask students to read out loud, I never raise my hand because of fear I’ll mess up. I slump down in my chair praying the teacher doesn’t call on me. Instead, I participate in other ways like answering questions teachers pose to the class. When people ask what it’s like to have dyslexia, I try to explain, but there’s nothing I can say that will allow them to truly understand. Often, I share one of my earliest memories. In preschool, we were learning the difference between right and left. The teacher kept saying your left hand is the one that makes an “L.” I stood there staring at my hands in confusion. I didn’t know which way “L” faced. It’s hard for those who haven’t experienced this to fully comprehend the obstacles I’ve had to overcome to get where I am.
While in elementary school I was diagnosed with a type of dyslexia, which did not make school easy for me because I already had a speech impediment due to being tongue tied. I got taken out of class everyday in elementary school to work on my speech and reading skills. Most teachers just thought I was not intelligent and put me in the lowest reading groups. Third grade was a turning point for me; my teacher, Mrs. Eddy, saw that I was intelligent enough to understand the hardest material, and she did her own research online which no other teacher had done for me. She helped me come up with techniques to help me read with my dyslexia more than any other teacher or reading coach had in school. I even started to attend a speech class in Edinboro every other day after school. I eventually learned how to work around my dyslexia and speech impediment. By the time I was in sixth grade, I did not need any more special attention for my impediments, and I started to take school more seriously. Now that I am over that tedious obstacle in my life, I am always striving to be the best version of myself as I can possibly be. Within the past year, teachers at my little sister’s school have started suspecting that she may have dyslexia. She has yet to be tested, but it will be happening soon. She has always had issues with reading, but never thought this would be why. However, if the tests come back, and they do say that she has dyslexia, that is not going to hold her down. She will still be able to conquer anything that she sets her mind to. Having a disability does not hold any person back from being able to succeed anything they want to. With the proper help, instruction and motivation, any student with a disability can be successful. Being different does not make you incapable. That is also something that I got from the PowerPoints.
ADHD Does Not Exist, the words were written in big red letters against a glowing saffron background. The eye-catching colors and intentionally provocative title did their job in evoking my curiosity enough that I picked up the book. It was a Friday afternoon or more importantly the first inaugural afternoon of spring break and the start of a much needed week long break, and here I was pacing slowly up and down the book racks pointer finger trailing over creaking book binders, hunting for something that would peak my interest. I am a student that has had to work hard for as long as I can remember in achieving my goals, dreams, both personal as well as academically. After many years of testing, I was diagnosed with dyslexia in my sophomore year of high school. Dyslexia is a congenital language process disorder. Some people may call Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder a curse; I would actually consider it a gift. Having the disorder has its challenges, and blessings. However, I find that when managed, ADHD can be a genuine asset in my life. The website “Study Guides and Strategies” provided many useful tips that I hope to use as a tool while learning, or apply in any classroom setting. Using these tricks and tips, the issues that I face while learning will hopefully become managed, and eventually become an asset to this journey we call learning.
Children who are diagnosed with ADHD struggle with managing behavior in school environments. As research has shown, students have difficulty paying attention and can be disruptive in class. This often leads to a decline in their academics and can hurt future academic achievements. There are a number of tools, programs, contracts, and classes that are available to students with ADHD. Along with a lack of attention and an abundance of hyperactivity, “twenty to thirty percent of ADHD children have an associated learning disorder of reading, spelling, writing, and arithmetic” (Daley & Birchwood, 2010). It can be difficult, as a teacher, to manage a classroom with children with ADHD. It is important that teachers, parents, and students, understand the opportunities available to them to help the child succeed.
Growing, developing and learning are the facts of life for all children. Each day children are faced with many new concepts and various challenges. Can you imagine how it feels for a child to face not only new challenges life has, but to face these challenges while living with a learning disability? These challenges are met not just when they begin school either. Students suffer from learning disabilities from the moment they begin learning, not when they start school. Learning disabilities are real and they affect millions of people. “One such disability that affects over approximately 15 percent of the total American population is dyslexia” ( Nosek 5).
The biggest obstacle that I have encountered in my ability to read and write are my learning disabilities. I’ve went through 18 years of my life before they were identified, and they have caused me so much frustration. I couldn’t understand why other kids could read out loud so well and I couldn’t. I couldn’t understand why it took me so long to read only a few pages of a book when other kids were at the end of the chapter. I had no idea why I couldn’t even sit down to write a single paper when other kids were doing their essays in a span of a couple hours.
Students, who have ADHD have trouble focusing in class, are easily distracted, have very short attention spans, have trouble following through and completing projects, often jump around between tasks, and following simple conversations and instructions. This would obviously make being successful in a traditional classroom very difficult for students who have this type of learn disability. Simple things like going over instructions, explaining assignments or completing homework. These students could easily become behavior problems in the classroom as they have growing frustrations levels over not being able to complete tasks get good grades or follow along with the class. They would require preferential seating and one on one contact with the teacher. By sitting towards the front of the room that would allow to the teacher to constantly check for understanding and make sure the student is on task. They would also require ILP or individual lesson plans. ADHD students would need long term projects and complex assignments broken down into smaller more manageable segments and would need the curriculum and grading expectations adjusted according to the student’s ability. You could also pair an ADHD student with another student in the class to help them with simple task and assignments. These are some of the challenges and solutions that would face students that have ADHD in a classroom.
People with dyslexia are slow, but that doesn’t mean that they are not intelligent. I think that people with this disorder have the most creative and outgoing minds in the world. People with dyslexia may have intelligent levels over one hundred. Brilliant mind come with brilliant ideas. Athletes, writers, actors, and even characters have or had dyslexia. Here are some of the brilliant minds you may know: Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Mozart, John Lennon, Tom Cruise, Magic Johnson, and Walt Disney. All of these dyslexics have come to be some of the greatest minds and just look were that put them.
