There are many problems facing the world today. One of the biggest issues facing future state leaders is the management of environmental threats to the United States’ land, water and air quality. Combating pollution in our area will take more than picking up discarded trash from the sides of our roadways; it means looking to the water and air, as well as the land. Davidson County in Tennessee alone hosts approximately 2,500 total miles of streams. Of these, an astounding 350 miles were placed on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) list of "impaired" waters in 2009 – meaning that pollution has altered properties of the water to the extent that it does not meet quality standards and cannot meet its designated uses. Pollutants such as …show more content…
· Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis and Chattanooga were among the top 25 most ozone-polluted cities in America, according to the American Lung Association’s “State of the Air 2002.”
· Sixteen Tennessee counties currently fail to meet soon-to-be-implemented federal standards for ozone pollution. In addition to the potential health implications of this pollution, future noncompliance might result in federal restriction on industrial growth as well as reduced federal highway funds.
· Tennessee lags behind many other states in the amount of money it dedicates – approximately $10 million per year – to acquire land for public use. States larger and smaller than Tennessee, such as Florida and New Jersey, dedicate $300 million and $98 million respectively to land acquisition and conservation programs.
These are just some of the pollution problems facing our State. Imagine the whole nation contributing to this problem. But many STEM programs can help this in bring down the pollution. Our STEM program could invent new ways to help the environment and decrease

Curbside Composting: The program caters to more than 5,000 commercial participants and many thousands of domestic households. Compost items include food waste, used paper products and garden clippings, all of which are transported to the Jepson Prairie Organics composting plant where they are reduced to a rich compost material. This material is then used by farms and vineyards as fertilizer to provide nutrients for plant life. This decreases the amount of trash in landfills and also gives back to the farmers which produces food. This has already been adopted by many cities across America and will continue to grow.
Ocean Cleanup: Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, Boyan Slat, announced that his organization will be deploying a world first by next year– the first system to safely remove plastic waste from oceans. The structure he has designed will float, buffered along by the oceans' currents, and snare plastics and other debris, which will then be picked up via a conveyor belt. At over 2,000 meters (6,561 feet), this debris-trapping system will be the longest floating structure in the ocean. The Ocean Cleanup plans to deploy the floating structure off the coast of Japan in early 2016, where it will be in operation for at least two
Texas has always been proud of their heritage and their industry. The boost in the economy is much appreciated by Texas, and our government appears to be hushed by the counter weights and balances where money appears to overpower the concern of environmental harm. Two articles that were reviewed gave the opportunity to enlightened Texans about how production appears to be affecting air quality and water and in turn is hurting Texans’ health. Through facts presented, it is apparent that Texas government must take measures to improve the regulatory agencies so that the health of Texans is secure. I am personally appalled by the facts stated in the articles, and reform is definitely required.

Hendersonville is experiencing rapid growth of retail, office, and industrial businesses and the population is expected to double within the next ten years (City of Hendersonville Tennessee, n.d.b). The rapid industrial growth will be of concern for the community’s air quality as well as the population density. This community was formed when Old Hickory Lock and Dam was completed in 1957
Tennessee receives the fifth greatest amount in overall General Fund support in the nation. The average percent of other states operating budget amount provided by the General Fund is closer to 40%. Tennessee is one of eight states nationwide and two in the southeast whose park system is free to the public. Also, Tennessee is one of ten states that do not have a dedicated funding mechanism for their state parks. Dedicated funding is when funds gained from a certain product are set aside to go to a certain good, examples of dedicated funding are licenses, severance tax, restrictions, leases, and many others; an example of a state with a dedicated funding mechanism is Virginia, which dedicates the revenue from timber sales. Tennessee derives capital expenditures for its state park investments from the General Fund and is the only state to do so. Most states do this through the issue of bonds or draw on dedicated funds for investments in their state park facilities. (Tennessee Support for State Parks Compared to Other
In 1999, the EPA created a regulation called the Regional Haze Rule. It is designed to return visibility in 156 national parks and wilderness areas back to "natural" conditions. The plan is to cut emissions from polluters like coal-fired power plants. The rule only tackles visibility. But "the pollutants that affect visibility can also affect ecosystems and human health," says John Vimont. He is chief of the research and monitoring branch of the National Park Service's Air Resources Division.
Air pollution continues to be a significant problem in the city of Birmingham, as it has been for decades. No one enjoys walking the streets of Birmingham only to taste or smell the smoke and particulates in the air, not to mention the damaging effects to one’s health. Fortunately, improvements have been made; forty years ago, residents of Birmingham could not even see the skyline due to the immense amounts of particulates in the air, but now the skyline is visible on a daily basis. The noticeable improvement indicates the progress that has been made over the years, but there is still plenty of room for much needed improvement. Birmingham’s air quality is among some of the worst in the United States, but there are several feasible and
The most prominent example of this is Salt Lake City. It is the largest city in Utah, and it is also the most polluted. This is a problem for the citizens of Salt Lake City. The levels of pollution there have more frequently reached unhealthy levels in recent years. This creates a serious health risk to both those with breathing problems and those who are perfectly healthy. “For the last few years, [Salt Lake City] has been grappling with one of the nation's most vexing pollution problems, where atmospheric inversions during the winter months lead to a thick fog of dirty air cloaking the region.” (Seen) It is a severe problem that has only gotten worse with time. Just last year, Salt Lake
Improved air quality wasn’t a subject of national concern until the mid 1900s. After decades of coal burning, unregulated gas emissions from cars and the excessive burning of fossil fuels, people started noticing bad air quality as a hazard to their lives. Over several decades, after seeing the costly effects air pollution was having on the environment and people’s health, interest groups like the Friends of The Earth club and the influences of Theodore Roosevelt and Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring finally came together to persuade the government to enforce legislation that would reduce air pollution. Because of these efforts, the policies of the Clean Air Act of 1963 and the Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Act of 1965, that aimed to control air pollution and raise air quality standards, helped create the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on December 2, 1970. Since then, the EPA has passed more air quality improvement acts, and amendments to previous acts passed, to increase restrictions on air pollutants, with their main policy concern being the Clean Air Act. Improved air quality acts imposed by the EPA have been successful in cleaning the United States’ air quality by reducing ground-level ozone pollution and reducing emissions, allowing for a decrease in pollution related deaths/illnesses and a better standard of living. The EPA, through regulations and the Clean Air Act, has delivered it’s promise to improve air quality in the United States.
No matter where you are at today the air quality is poor and increasing in most cities. Dallas-Fort Worth is ranked number seven according to the American Lung Association’s air quality report for having the worst air. Everywhere you look there is pollution and its time to take dramatic measures in order to lower health and en-vironmental problems. Problems that are increasing due to the higher demand for goods, services, and transportation.
Currently, it is undoubtedly apparent that Texas has complications with its management of pollution in its multitudinous cities and metropolitan areas; such examples that distinctly portray the incompetence of maintaining a clean and healthy environment would be: detritus littering profusely in public places in cities, the health issues facing many Texans due to pollution, and the environmental ordeals occurring that effectively influence people, food, and water. Environmental pollution is a preeminent issue that needs to be allocated and resolved as swiftly as possible; it is an effort that would necessitate numerous organizations and communal aid.
At the moment the o zone regulation limit is seventy five parts per billion and the EPA’S Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee recommends to set the standard in between sixty and seventy parts per billion. The National Association of Manufactures says that the new regulation woud increase energy cost and reduce family incomes to about an equal amount of one hundred eighty two thousand lost jobs for Texas. The new ozone regulations could put a kink in natural gas production and then result in about a fifteen percent increase in electricity prices. Forty percent of the U.S. population already live in areas that don’t meet the current EPA regulation. Those people are at risk for aggravated asthma, difficulty breathing, pre mature death, cardiovascular harm, and lower birth
Water pollution in Tennessee is a major environmental issue. Polluted rivers and streams are major problems because the water inside of them is supposed to be a clean source of water, but sadly that’s not the case. In order to stop this, we have to keep moving forward to find a solution.
What are the problems with America currently today? One problem we have faced in America is environmental pollutions. Environmental pollutions are the harmful filth in the air, we breathe everyday. Perhaps we do not notice them as we breathe. Some filth is seen from a far distance. Factory filth is the main pollution producer in the USA now.
Pollution is a major problem for all of us. People need to recognize this situation so we can start making a difference to this problem. In order
The environmental issue for my Milestone project is Air pollution. Air pollution is the introduction of particulates, biological molecules, and many harmful substances into Earth 's atmosphere, causing diseases, allergies, and death to humans, damage of other living organisms like animals and crops, or the natural environment (National Geographic, 2016). Georgia air pollution has been a focus for many years. Environmental protection Agency and Clean air act has been one of the main contributors to controlling environmental air pollution from increasing. The research is on scholars, chemicals and gases connected to air pollution and health hazards. Solution for Georgia is conserving, alternative energy and renewable resources.
