Environmental Pollution: What Are The Problems With America Today?

Pollution has always been an issue within our society. Derrick Jenson and Stephanie McMillan as well as Michael Pollan have all written articles about the issues in our environment and the effects of pollution. We are causing an increasing amount of pollution as time goes on. Virtually everything we do causes some form of damage to the environment and it seems that regardless of how much we want to fix this issue we are making no progress towards a solution. Based on their articles “As The World Burns” and Pollans article “Why Bother” these authors have similar views and yet contrast on many points.

America faces many problems and issues. The three I have chosen to write about today are racism, North Korea seems to be getting worse as time goes on. Racism is spreading across America. Drugs are killing more and more people every day.

The factories in the industrial revolution were bad for the environment. An excerpt from document #11, The Conditions Of The Working Class In England, states that there was smelly puddles, unpaved roads, and filth and garbage everywhere. These things are bad for the environment and they all were created by the factories during the industrial revolution. In the photo of the outside of a factory, from document #7, you can see that there was a ton of pollution coming from the factories. There was also gunk

The problem of pollution comes with the ever expanding human population. With this growing population our demand for products also increases. We live in a consumer society, especially in the United States, and making huge quantities of products generates a large amount of pollution and waste. American citizens love to buy, we represent only 5% of the global population but we use 25% of the world's resources. The unfortunate part is that all the resources we use to make products end up in some landfill somewhere because a huge amount of Americans don't understand the importance of recycling and reducing consumption of products. American citizens throw away 40% of the food they purchase. That number is ridiculous, especially since so many Americans

There are many problems in Ohio that require attention for them to be solved. One of our main problems in Ohio right now is the level of algae we have in our lakes and rivers. Having algae in our lakes and rivers is dangerous for our present and future. Having our community drink water with algae in it can get people sick and poisoned. There have been many large algae blooms within these past few years, and having no preparations for the algae in the water caused immense panic in the community. There were stores that limited one case of water per customer, and most stores didn’t even have any water after only a couple hours, while the tap water wasn’t safe for only three days. Given that we didn’t know how long the algae would be in our water, no one was prepared and officials couldn’t tell us exactly when the water would be clean again. Most of the phosphorus that causes the algae to grow comes from our crops, like corn and wheat, being fertilized. This algae causes terror in our community and causes people to react in terrible ways. We need to have a solution figured out so that the terror stops and our families are safe. Having no water is one of the worst situations for so many people to be in when they aren’t prepared for it. This is an issue not only for our community, but for our whole country.

A controversy issue in the United States is whether or not we should be involved in the controlling international pollution. Pollution is problem world-wide. Many would like to be involved in pollution while others would not. I believe that the United States should not be involved in the controlling of international pollution.

Water Pollution has been an increasing problem over the last few years. Pollution comes from many different things; agricultural, urban runoff, industrial, sedimentary, animal wastes, and leeching from landfills/septic systems just to name a few (Resources). The reason why pollution has increased over the years is because the rise in population and the advancements in technology the society has made. If society plans on having their resources here for many years to come they are going to have to make some drastic changes in the way they treat the earth, and these changes will have to start with their pollutants (Foundation).

1) Are you aware of the amount of waste you create each day? I do not believe anyone is completely aware of the amount of waste they generate on a daily basis. It is such a natural action – throw something in the trash – that it is automatic and done without much or any consideration as to where it goes, where it came from, or where will it ultimately go or become. I do recycle and compost when possible, but that too becomes a process that sometime appears moot because products are being made from materials that do not qualify or require special centers for recycling.1 We have become a “use it and throw it away” society.

The United States is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year.

Pollution is caused by people littering, throwing their trash everywhere, wasting energy, and burning fuel from vehicles. Pollution effects all animals and plants from around the world. It can harm them and kill them. Some animals have gone extinct because of pollution, thanks to humans. To be exact, over 11 species of animals have gone extinct because of pollution, Not to mention people have died too! How much? Well, about 6.5 million people have mainly because of respiratory problems (lung cancer caused by air pollution) . Yea, its really bad. Pollution has been around for a long time in the U.S since the mid-19 centuries. It got worse because of the industrial revolution. This caused the air and water to become polluted because of all of the manufacturing factories, which uses coal for their factories and threw their waste

8 billion people call this planet home today, and what have we done to it. We have made the planet grow for good and for bad. We have made advances that have changed the world but the process to making these advances are not always good. The world has gone through some serious change in the recent history of the planet. Burning of fossil fuels, unregulated methods of productions, and rapid industrialization of cities. India in the 1700’s was under control of the British Government and demand made them industrialize very rapidly with no regulations to control pollution. The same thing is happening to China now with the need for resources which causes rise in population which means higher demand for resources, an endless circle. But what causes these changes to happen and so rapidly. Why is today’s world so polluted?

The other problem closely related to industrialization is problem of big cities. The problem of air pollution increases in the bigger cities because mnozstvo of cars, buses, and trucks. During the traffic jams all kind of pollutants are released into the air, and then people who live near roads have to breath this “dirty” air.

Chemical pollution consider one of the most pressing environmental challenges that we face. It is imperative that we address the environmental hazards associated with chemical pollutants. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and halogenated compounds because of their considerable toxicity and recalcitrant nature, are particularly concerning pollutants. The hydrophobicity among PAHs also increases human health risks by promoting bioaccumulation in the fatty tissue. Thus, the determination of effective and cost efficient methods for removal or degradation of PAHs is essential. , Bacterial bioremediation, under in situ conditions, is a promising strategy for reducing polyaromatic hydrocarbons pollution.

Therefore, there are considerable emphases on the recovery, recycling and upgrading their by-products. Since these by-products antioxidant activities (Bauer et al., 2012) and could be converted into a range of commercial products (Martínez et al., 2012). For those reasons, different researches have assayed different methods in order to obtain new raw material products from fruits and vegetables processing by products (Calín-Sánchez et al., 2012). Large scale consumption as fresh fruits, the Citrus fruits are mainly processed to produce juice. The waste of Citrus fruits processing industry left after juice extraction, such as peels, pulps and seeds, corresponding to about 50% of the raw processed, fruit can be used as a potential source of valuable by products, (El Adawy et al., 1999). In Egypt and in many Mediterranean countries, major quantities of the peel are not further processed, if not processed further, it becomes waste produce odor, soil pollution, harborage for insects and can give rise to serious environmental pollution, (Mandalari et al., 2006). Some attempts were made to use these residues as livestock feed. Although their low nutritional value allowed only limited success (Bampidis and Robinson, 2006).

The last great source of pollution lays in the businesses. Although not common, businesses have been known to dump their waste products into streams, lakes, and rivers. This may seem like a relatively small occurrence that really is not your concern, but you're wrong. Each time one of these companies pollutes there are horrible consequences to pay. Mutations, destroyed ecosystems, and human death have all occurred as a direct result of illegal dumping. It contaminates our drinking water and soil. It causes entire communities of humans (not to mention animals) to move on to new places not to return for at least a century. The pollutants dumped by industry are so concentrated that a single barrel can destroy an entire lake's ecosystem. Not only do companies dump chemicals, but also hot water. This hot water kills most life it comes into contact with, but also causes an overgrowth
