Metacognitive reflection is thinking about your thinking. English 101 and TRS 105 has introduced me to many types of writing strategies I did not know existed, such as summary, response, critique, rhetorical analysis, informative synthesis, compare and contrast essay. In both of my English classes, I have learned how to properly and effectively write each and every one of them. English 101 has been a challenging class, however, TRS 105 has made English 101 a lot easier to understand. In English 101 I had to write four different essays and with each of those essays came a challenge. In English 101 our first essay assignment was to write a summary and response essay on either the movie Get Out, The Butler and District 9. I choose to write …show more content…
The purpose of our third essay was to pick a topic then compare and contrast it. My last essay assignment is to write a research paper on the country Honduras. To begin, one of the challenges I faced with all four of my essays was the writing process. The writing process is what you do before you write an essay. For example, the writing process includes prewriting, drafting, revising and editing. I had a difficult time getting started because I did not know where to begin. At first, I could not figure out how to connect my topic sentences to each of my body paragraphs, transitioning between body paragraphs, and I had a hard time connecting my thesis statement to the rest of my essay. On top of that, when I first wrote my rough draft for the movie Get Out, I wrote down everything that occurred during the film, and as a result, my essay was over the paper limit, which was three pages. I tried to cut it down, however, I had a difficult time doing so because I was not sure as to what information was relevant and what was irrelevant in my paper. In addition, once I summarized the main ideas of the movie I had to respond to it, and it was not an easy task. To illustrate, I could not use the phrases I believe, in my opinion, I think, I feel, and …show more content…
To begin with, I would have gone to the academic center to get more help with my essay. To put it another way, I would have gone there to get extra help with my topic sentences, organization, grammar, spelling, sentence fragments, run-ons and my thesis statement. If the academic center was not enough help for me I would have gone and visited my professor during her office hours and received even more assistant. Another thing I would have done differently is to ask questions during both of my English classes to get a better understand as to what was being
Before I enrolled in English 101 my ability to write specific types of papers (argumentative, rhetoric, narrative, etc) were mediocre at best. However, from reading The Norton Field Guide to Writing and They Say, I Say I gained a deeper understanding on how to better argue a point or write a narrative with a clear theme. Moreover, from my time of being in English 101 I have improved tremendously in the given areas: Rhetoric, Technology, Research, and Collaboration.
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
In the English 110 class, we performed many tasks that are required to do in the class. The class also required us to read a book which was titled, The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Reading the book was to help us write an essay about the book. We wrote many essays in the class also each essay was a different type of essay. In total in the class we wrote 4 essays on different subjects and with different methods of writing of the essay. Three of the four essay I selected because it showed the seven different outcomes that are for writing. The seven outcomes are process, revision, critical reading, rhetorical analysis and argumentation. Then the others are researching, quoting, paraphrasing, and documenting sources plus
As I reflect on English Comp II 112, I have a variety of mixed emotions about this. I was unsure of the class at first, for many reasons. My very first day I remember leaving the J off my professor’s name and I just knew it would be a downward spiral after that. To me, writing was something I loved to do but I had a difficult time putting my thoughts into words and organizing my paper. Usually, once I typed my introduction I thought my thoughts would just flow from that point, but they never did. Never the less, I kept striving to have a great paper.
Throughout the English 111 class, my writing ability has grown to meet all of the course outcomes. In this class I was required to analyze fictional texts and make complex claims that matter in an academic contexts and revise them in order to make grammatical sense. For the 1.0 sequence I focused on Night, by Elie Wiesel and Sarah’s Key, written by Tatiana de Rosnay. Short papers 1.1 and 1.2, focused on each book respectively while major paper 1.3 allowed me to back my claim with both of the texts allowing for a larger exchange of ideas. Within the 2.0 sequence I focused mainly on the Poisonwood Bible, penned by Barbra Kingsolver. The short paper I have chosen to focus on for this sequence was 2.2; in which I had to write a letter to a character
When I was a young student, my first English professor taught me the alphabet. After one year, he taught me to put those letters together to make words, sentences, and finally paragraphs in essays. During the high school I learn to write short paragraphs, with ought putting in the correct structure .When I moved in America I stared the course of English as a Second Language and I finished with success last year. My professor advise me that when I starts the English 101 my writing it will be more fulfil and more structural. He has right as when I arrived in English 101, I realized there was more to do not just writing words on paper.
The third goal is develop a metacognitive understanding of the processes of reading, writing, and thinking, I did by doing the discourse essay, and personal narrative, journals and reading response. The discourse community essay contained thinking because I had to think back how writing was being used and how I could support that. Then getting it all down on the paper by writing the essay. Reading was
This portfolio will show you the turmoil’s of my year in 9th grade English Honors. My assignments shown in this portfolio have been very mediocre and show the many mistakes I have made throughout. I have constantly had errors in my MLA formatting and basic grammar. I think that I have these constant errors because I am just not thoroughly proofreading my work. It also reflects on how many errors have escaped my proofreadings’ and I hope to improve this skill in the future. I have also had a lot of problems with analyzing texts and making through commentaries. Like my proofreading skills, I strive to really improve and strengthen my disadvantages. Strengthening these skills will greatly benefit me in the future if I shall take AP English 11
The beginning of my junior year seems like it was such a long time ago. This may be because of how much I have grown since the start of the year. When I began AP English, my writing skills needed improvement. For instance, I often used incorrect grammar and struggled with staying on topic. In just one semester, my writing has improved immensely. The more than I write, the more I learn about how to craft a good paper. I have worked on improving my grammar, using rhetoric, addressing my subject, and many more elements of writing. In addition to improving my writing, I have gained many skills to become a better student. I have learned about effective study techniques and time-management skills that allow me to be the most successful. Since I always try my best, I know that over time I will continue to grow in my studies. This year I have gained countless skills that will help me succeed in English in the future.
This year, AP English 3 has been my favorite class because of the wide variety of topics that we covered and the essay writing skills that we learned. By providing a large educational basis to students' writing, this class expands the learner's ability to communicate in a profesional, educational manner, a skill with which they will use for the rest of their life. As well as scoring eights (on a nine-point scale) on several English papers, the skills that I have grown and nurtured throughout the semester have helped me score fives or sixes on my AP US History essays (on a six-point scale). Through learning how to go in-depth and synthesize a topic, AP English 3 has taught me how to consistently score high grades on AP essays, as well as communicate
“Finally!” I thought to myself as summer is slowly approaching, “I am done with this high school forever.” I honestly am so excited for summer that each day I count down the number days I have for school. Moreover, I constantly think of the activities that I will do during the summer that sound a lot better than school. Despite being overjoyed of leaving high school, I certainly would not deny that I have tremendously improved as a writer. True, as mentioned in all of my previous reflective essays, I still despise English; however, I have to grudgingly admit College Credit Plus English 1010 refined my writing skills from my junior year in AP English class. My classmates and teacher pointed out some ways that I could brush up my essays, which
Since the beginning of this semester, English 101 has helped me realize both my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. One weakness that I have realized about myself is my tendency to not fully plan out my essays before I start writing the rough drafts. This is one thing that English 101 has helped me to improve, by creating well-planned out outlines before starting to write. A strength that I have is writing strong commentary that supports the provided quote and shows why the quote is relevant to the essay’s overall thesis.
I have only been attending Cleveland State University for two semesters, and as this course comes to an end I feel like I grown and learned many techniques more than ever. I came to Cleveland State University with only my high school knowledge on how to format an argumentative essay, and throughout this course I now know how to write and format many other papers. Taking English 100 has taught me how to break down and analyze an article, it taught me how to find confidence in my work, and it helped me grow to an even better writer.
I struggled during the whole process of writing an essay. My biggest problem of all was putting my thoughts in order so I could make sense of what I wanted to say. I brainstorm for days trying to figure out a topic. With the help of the eLearning text information on module 2, how to choose a topic and developing a working thesis I started to write down some ideas. With the help of Module 3, Introduction to Narrative Essay, and the examples that were provided, I was able to start getting some ideas of what I wanted to write about. I finally came up with, Moving away
Throughout this semester in English 101, I have made a significant improvement on multiple things, including how to be an exceptional writer and thinker. English has always been one of my most favored subjects to study because to me it instructs students how to be intelligent, how to become a more creative and critical thinker, and be able to develop ethical values and imagination. You can express yourself more efficiently in English than you can in any other subject. This class has truly made me a more confident writer and helped me express myself in different ways through the different types of papers I wrote. By writing different types of papers I have improved multiple areas of my writing. I have grown as a student in diverse areas such
