Undermined by dread of another extra-terrestrial invasion, humanity turns to the youngsters to get ready for the approaching war. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a novel and Ender's Game directed by Gavin Hood is the motion picture based – very loosely - on that novel. So how true to the book were these producers? Translating a 368 page military science fiction novel from 30 years back into a 2 hour film regardless of how well approached will have a few aspects of it hit the fan. With the principle force of the story being fixated on Ender's inward voice and several enormous subplots, a few components are sure to be not true to the book whatsoever.

First of all, the character development of the movie was different and similar to the book. Over the course of the book, Ender finds himself in despair often because of the stress and pressure of Battle School. From the beginning of Ender’s time in Battle School, Colonel Graff isolated Ender in order to teach him that he was not going to have help from friends or teachers when being Commander of the Fleet. Ender also realizes that he has a killer instinct like his brother, Peter, who left him with some terrifying memories from his childhood. He also has a hard time accepting the fact that he has killed the entire Formic species and taken away all the queen’s children. In the movie, the emotions that Ender felt in the book were not all there. The movie focused on Ender’s struggle with finding the right military strategies to use and figuring out the best way to lead his army and fleet. (Card 82) This quote captures the essence of one of the main points in the book Ender’s Game- and yet it, like numerous other parts of the plot, fans found cut from the movie. Differences in plot included character changes, added romance, and differences in setting. In character development, changes comprise of personality changes, less group development time, and less dynamic changes in characters. With use of detail, changes involve age discrepancies, lack of Ender’s genius, and liberties taken with setting appearance.

The adults in Ender’s Game, are believed to be a source for providing the best future for the children, when in reality they are using children to provide a possible future for Earth. Using strategies that are both physically harmful and emotionally negative, the adults do nothing but hurt Ender and the other children on Earth.

Ender is born into a family of highly intelligent people. As a child he is hated by his brother, Peter, along with other schoolmates and is protected by his sister, Valentine. He has to leave Valentine behind when he is taken away to Battle School, which is located on a ship very far away from earth so he can assist in the fight against the buggers. Ender shows off his extreme intelligence and is separated from the rest of the recruits by Colonel Graff of the International Fleet. Ender then becomes friends with a recruit name Alai. This aids Ender to make friends and fit in with people. Ender is noticed by the military commanders because of his dominance in “the mind game”. He is promoted to the Salamander Army shortly after.

Ender’s game was so laughably bad as a movie, that i’m upset that you made us watch it. It all starts with Ender, a third. Who is put through numerous difficult trials of isolation, and violence. Eventually being put on the ultimate task of destroying an entire species. While watching Ender’s Game I couldn’t help but laugh at how bad, and different it was compared to the book.

Gavin Hood, the director of “Ender’s game’’ has made one of the best movies I have seen. In just about 3 hours he got into good detail of the book. Asa Butterfield, who plays Ender plays his character very well in the movie. Although some parts were left out from the novel, The movie is very detailed with the original story. The battle room is almost like how I pictured it in the book but much larger. I did not imagine the gates to be like how they were in the movie and how they battled was totally different from how I pictured it.

“Enders Game” was released in 2013 and was directed by Gavin Hood. In the first opening weekend, the movie made around $27 million. Some famous actors in the movie were Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Haliee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, Abigail Breslin, and Ben Kingsley. An interesting fact about the movie is that, “the producers consulted with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to discuss some of the future space shuttle technology depicted in the film”(IMDb.com, 2013).
