One of the more interesting points made by Marti in the presentation was how some similar words can have very different definitions and perceived meanings. The one example given was the differences in meanings behind the terms “elder” and “elderly”. Elder is used to refer to a status or rank (this term is thought highly of) while elderly is used to describe a stage in life (late adulthood); the latter term is associated with words such as “old”, “retired”, and “hoary”. While the two terms are different by one letter, each has its own unique definition. One has a more positive definition while the other one has a more negative definition. Several of my peers were too surprised on how two closely related term have two completely different
General assessment of Mr. McKay raises a few red flags that may indicate potential elder mistreatment. Dried stool and dirty sheets are noted on more than one occasion. This reveals that Mr. McKay is not getting adequate and timely care and the care takers are neglecting to tend to him on a more frequent basis. Pre albumin and albumin are used to interpret individual’s nutritional status. Mr. McKay’s pre-albumin was within a normal range with 16.0 to 35.0 mg per dL being the norm (Beck & Rosenthal, 2002). His albumin level, used to monitor long term nutritional changes was below the norm. However, these levels are dependent on other factors like hydration status as well as kidney function and are not as sensitive to
The Senior Show is a relatively new concept at Pinecrest High School, where the seniors, and only seniors, who are part of the theater department produce, direct, cast, and star in a single play completely by themselves. This year the seniors chose to work on a play called Almost, Maine, by John Cariani. The show was performed on May 12, beginning at 7:00 pm.
The well-being and safety of your aging loved one is important to you. Since you cannot be with them every day, you want to make sure they are receiving the best care possible. Although, you know that your senior loved one needs assistance at home they might not be as open to the decision. There are things that you can do to communicate your worries and concerns with your aging senior.
“The term ‘aging out’ refers to children within a state’s foster care system who are still in the system upon reaching the age of majority or when they have graduated from high school” (Craft, 2017, Aging Out). Many of these children “have not found permanency with an adoptive family … or they have not been able to return to their biological parents” (Craft, 2017, Aging Out). A child typically ages out at 18 years, “but some states have extended services beyond this age because so many young adults are just not ready to be thrust out into the world on their own at such a young age” (Craft, 2017, Aging Out). If a foster parent chooses to continue parenting the foster child once they have aged out of the system, they are able to as long as the foster youth is okay with this. If an individual continues fostering a child, they will no longer receive money from the state.
Mrs. Audine Blue is my client for this “Elderly Adult Survey.” Interviewing this lovely lady was delightful as she revealed her birthday of August 15, 1933 and is 84 years young. The lovely Mother Blue originally from North Carolina was afforded to live for a while in California, as well as, in New York before returning to North Carolina. Married to Mr. Henry Shelton Blue at very young age, they have one daughter, one grandchild, and one great grandchild. Asking about her parents, Mother Audine became sad considering they died while she was young. The cause of their death was hard work and cruel treatment that Mother Audine had to witness as a child. However, she recalled how they put their trust in God and
More people are living much longer lives than in years past. People are very surprised to be living much longer lives than they thought they would. Health care has played a large part in patient longevity. There are many normal changes that come along with aging, however, because people are living longer these normal changes can become chronic problems. Common aging problems that can make the older adult a vulnerable population are reviewed in Gerontological Nursing (Tabloski, 2014) and can include nutritional needs, medication management, sleep changes, oral or mouth care, renal problems and musculoskeletal concerns. According to A Profile of Older Americans: 2013 (http://www.hhs.gov), there are a large amount
The Culture of the Youth changes like the glass bottle that breaks into pieces with a loud noise that spreads in split seconds. Even in that moment, the response at the momentous move by the emotions determined by feelings. From the textbook “Hurt 2.0”, Clark describes today’s teen as abandoned. They are “hurt” and living in the world of pain. They basically live in a world “beneath” the world of adults. They have a completely different set of survival skills than what their parents or grandparents experienced. The difference between the two generations cannot be always understandable toward each other, since the culture changes like every second and the borderline that separates the teen world from the adult world is getting deeper. The Culture
Coming into this task, I had never put forth any interest in the aging population. I knew this group was vulnerable and in need of more advocacy to raise awareness but it was not as appealing as other populations. I did not have tremendous knowledge of what aging adults go through on a daily basis or any challenges they so often face. Therefore, when I arrived to the set location of the interview, I was a bit timid and afraid. This was my first time ever interviewing someone of this age with the intensions it was geared for. I was worried of how Denise was going to respond to my personal questions or if she even would. I was completely shocked to find that she was absolutely respectful and willing to answer anything I wanted to ask. After asking
Once every 12 years there is a unique opportunity to reinforce the bonds between Mexico and the United States, when our presidential election cycles coincide. For Mexico, the July 1 elections will be a crucial moment that will set the tone for our future and define the US-Mexico relationship for generations to come.
What if there was a cure for aging? Never get old and living for a long period of time? What if there was a medical technique for you to inject yourself and add 50 years or so to live. The only way you could die would be either a disease, car accident or by your own choice. You would get a chance to detect how much the world changes over time. An unlimited time to earn as much money as you want. Even get a great education! You could be 20 when you get the “never aging” shot and stay 20 while you can attend to a 4 four college and be someone important at the age of 20. Doesn’t that sound great?
The National Institute of Health reports that nearly 35 million American seniors have problems with balance. These seniors may feel dizzy or unstable when they walk, stand, or move. As a result, it is often difficult to climb stairs, rise up out of a chair or sofa, bend over without falling down, or even walk without a fear of falling or tripping. Issues regarding balance are one of the most frequent reasons seniors seek medical help and assistance. It is also an important reason for seniors to avail themselves of eldercare services.
This paper will discuss the beginning of my personal financial plan. It will also outline said plan into a budget that will be put to use throughout the next few months.
Australia is one of the successful multicultural country. There is also a great number of elderly that came from culturally and linguistically diverse background. The population of elderly in Australia are increasing every year. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics (2015), the proportion of the population aged 65 years and over increase from 11.8% to 14.4% over 20 years from 1994- 2014, it is projected to increase rapidly over the next decades. As of June 30, 2014, there is an increase of 118, 700 of 65 years and above people over the past 12 months that represent the 3.6% increase in population (2015). 4 out of 10 Australians aged 65 and over (37%), were born over overseas in 2014 this is according to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2016).
To have a better understanding about the process of aging and what it means to someone who is considered an old adult, I interviewed someone who is seventy-five years old. This person is a female whose name is Margaret James. Mrs. James is an only child who was born in the island of Jamaica. However, at the age of twenty-one, she and her family migrated from the tropical island to England. This was because Mrs. James, at that time wanted to pursue a career in nursing. And so she
For this paper, I had the privilege of interviewing one of my friend’s grandmother. Her name is Jamie Hansen and she is a healthy and active 68-year-old grandmother. In the beginning of the phone call, I asked some basic background knowledge questions such as how many grandkids she has and if she was a widower or not. I found out that she and her husband are happily married and that she has six grandchildren. As I got to know her more I started asking questions that pertained to the interview aspect of social theories. I figured out that Mrs. Hansen’s responses led to an application of the continuity and socioemotional selective theories.
