Coming into this task, I had never put forth any interest in the aging population. I knew this group was vulnerable and in need of more advocacy to raise awareness but it was not as appealing as other populations. I did not have tremendous knowledge of what aging adults go through on a daily basis or any challenges they so often face. Therefore, when I arrived to the set location of the interview, I was a bit timid and afraid. This was my first time ever interviewing someone of this age with the intensions it was geared for. I was worried of how Denise was going to respond to my personal questions or if she even would. I was completely shocked to find that she was absolutely respectful and willing to answer anything I wanted to ask. After asking
The Boomer that I interviewed recently retired but she said that for the most part, she enjoyed the professional development days and always found at least some helpful information that she could take with her. She especially liked the workshops that were interactive as well as those that incorporated small group work which enabled them to learn from each other. She said that when she was a young, new teacher she would often sign up for conferences that were out of town which focused on an applicable subject matter. Some of her team teachers would often come along so that they eventually incorporate the material together. She said that these conferences were very helpful to her. She especially liked the Great Expectations workshops she went
After spending an afternoon interviewing my elderly father-in-law, I gained insight into how he perceives the aging process and the impact on the quality of his life. First, and foremost he viewed aging in a very positive and healthy manner. He believes that a positive attitude assists in accepting physical and psychosocial changes and enjoyed the fact that he and his wife are both physically fit and cognitively alert. He felt confident that advances made in health care and the quality of their lives would continue to be empowering. He enjoys the benefits of being a senior citizen including discounted travel, free education, and other incentives marketed towards seniors. He expressed a sense of well-being with respect to the numerous
Today, one of the fastest growing segments of the population is the elderly. Due to healthcare advancements to increase longevity, 70 million American citizens will be considered elderly by 2030! This is all possible due to the research done by the medical community, although the NBAC (National Bioethics Advisory Commision) does not recognize the elderly as a vulnerable population. In fact, the agency does state that vulnerability can be context-specific, if a population may be at risk due to age, health, functional status, chronic, or terminal illness. Which, are some of the reasons that describe the elderly population. This can lead to an imbalance of subject at researcher when the elderly are not considered a vulnerable population. Also,
My grandfather recently passed away 6 months ago. So I have personally witnessed my grandmother go through the grieving process as well as deal with her own sickness. Unfortunately my grandmother will have to enter a nursing home because my mother can no longer tend to her needs. This is a difficult time for my family because my grandmother doesn't want to go into a nursing home, but she requires 24/7 care. For my interview I chose the neighbors mother who’s situation, age and lifestyle are very similar to my grandmother’s. Her name is Lucy and she is 82 yrs. old living with her oldest daughter. I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome to the questions I asked her.
Simple misconceptions of the elder sexuality are often made based on what others say, lack of knowledge, and the medias representation. As stated in chapter 11, Americans live in a youth-oriented, consumer-based society, essentially meaning that only the young are beautiful and sexy and we should fear aging because of the negative side effects that come with old age. Although, we eventually become victims of our own negative views of the elderly and I don’t think the misconceptions of the elderly will change anytime soon, partially because the media would need to change the way they portray how we think the elderly act and behave, and portray them more realistically. A majority of the elder population is at least interested in sex later in
The Aging American Population The American population has changed dramatically over the last century. Our society has become effected by this in all areas and walks of life. It is unknown what the future holds for America, but the statistical trends in an aging population may shed some light. The rate of aging in the United States will increase dramatically in the second and subsequent decades of the century.
Older people are a great resource for families, societies, and workforce and, a repository of knowledge that can prevent repeating mistakes in society. So, paying attention to their quality of life, social participation, health and security are important issues. increasing the number of older people in every country have effects on the economy of the country for supplying health care costs; Therefore, one of the ways to fill the gap between stagnation economic situation and budget constraints, staffing, and resources of health care is to prioritize the factors affecting successful aging. There are lots of data and factors affecting successful aging. The aim of this study is to recognize factors affecting successful aging in older people with
Misconceptions about aging are easy to come by. You may have even met an older person who fits a common stereotype. But here's a reality check: Age doesn't define who a person is.
I believe that our society will face an increasing scarcity of resources as the growth in the older population rises. My reasoning is that as our older population grows, the number of people consuming scarce resources but not contributing to their production will grow with them. Given this scenario, we will see decreases in available food, water, and living space. Our textbook supports my opinion in various ways. For example, the textbook proposes a question that is fairly similar to mine and it is, “Will there be enough young people to care for and financially support the growing number of elderly citizens?” (Carl, Pg. 264) This question is directly related to the notion that I put forth previously. As the number of elderly grow, and the birth rate slows down, who will be taking care of those too old to work?
Another major issue that the medical professionals are preparing to handle is the quickly growing aging population. As modern medicine allows people to live longer lives, the workforce is struggling to keep up. A majority of patients in these aging population tend to suffer from chronic diseases which, in turn, only adds an additional strain to the health care
The last interview topic is “Aging”. When she young she a very pretty and so many guys loved her. I wonder how she feel I’m a old, so I’m not pretty anymore and how she recognition I’m getting aging. The first question I asked “what did it feel like when you were young?” She said the young is blessed and happy everything is pretty. Nextquestion is “From being young what did you learn when you got older?” she said really people getting aging is very fair. I asked why? when I young 20, I thought I’m never getting old. But 10, 20 year later. I felt getting old is fair. And I had deep thinking. I’m so surprised myself. I’m so thankful I had deep thinking. next question is “What are some memories from your childhood?” She said the best memorise
Aging adults have different dental needs than younger patients. Health conditions, medications and changes that naturally occur in the mouth due to aging require individualized care that caters to a senior's unique needs. While many seniors believe that losing their teeth is a natural part of aging, this is a common misconception. With proper care, aging adults can enjoy good oral health while keeping their teeth throughout their life.
Aging is obviously a complicated process and many individuals hold different perspectives towards the topic. In my opinion, aging is best defined as the process of becoming older. In the concept of aging, there is a type of aging referred to as successful aging.
In short, I enjoyed the experience of interviewing an elderly person. Conversing with elderly adults is something I am fond of. Choosing a person for the interview was not a difficult task because I have a close relationship with my neighbor Virginia. On Monday afternoon I called her house phone and explained in detail that I would be interviewing an elderly person and would she like to participate. I selected Virginia because of her age and I believe she is the wisest in my neighborhood. The information and tips provided from Virginia are very useful and insightful.
