The act of double consciousness is a way that people behave differently in front of different groups of people. Web dubois was responsible for naming this concept in his book, The Souls of Black People. Many people worldwide do this act of double consciousness. It is a way of coping sometimes, also a way to get through certain situations. As in the movie, The Butler, the main character had to act differently around his black friends and family than when he was at work in The White House where white people surrounded him. It was because he did not feel accepted in the white social group. It was not just for racial reasons but economic reasons as well. Some people feel that a need to have a split personality to protect themselves from different prejudices. A line from the movie states, “We wear the mask that grins and lies” as a way to cope.
Throughout history many different groups have adapted this same concept. United states is not always

A professional football player named Kaepernick has been kneeling during the national anthem at games. It is his way of expressing himself and his opinions about the racial injustice in America today. President Obama made a supportive statement about him having the freedom to express his beliefs and a soccer player named Rapinoe has also gotten behind Kaepernick. This female soccer player is protesting against the way gay people are treated in the USA and has also decided to kneel during the national anthem.
As a country, many are trying to stop being two faced and having a double conscience. We are learning from our past and making a difference for those Americans that are not treated fairly. People are not just trying to get through situations anymore but taking a stand and demanding equality and the right to act the same way in every group. When we feel accepted by others, we will not need to wear a mask
The Negro identity and American identity. The sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others. “One ever feels his twoness,—an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder (Du Bios3).” Trying to merge his double self into his truer self. W.E.B Du Bios talks in a double tongue. He talks so his people can fully understand what he’s talking about the hidden message and he talks so that the whites can relate and he won’t offend
In The Souls of Black Folk, W. E. B. Du Bois coins “double consciousness”, as a “peculiar feeling… this sense of always looking at one 's self through the eyes of others” (Du Bois I). He goes on to say that as a black person, “one ever feels his twoness—an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body,” (Du Bois I). In other words, double consciousness refers to living with two identities that are at constant war with each other. For Du Bois, a black man can never simply just be an “American” or a “Negro”, for blacks will
Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has created much controversy in the nation over his latest protest. During a preseason football game Kaepernick was photographed sitting during the national anthem (McKirdy). When asked about the action later, Kaepernick explained, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” (Wyche). The nation exploded. Many showed their support for the quarterback, expressing pride in him for “standing up” for the things he believes in. Others displayed their anger with him for disrespecting the flag and all the things the flag represents. After seeing what a backlash his action received, Kaepernick decided to kneel instead of sitting, claiming that his new way of protesting would show more respect for those in the line of duty (Anthem uproar). Although he has the right to protest, sitting during the national anthem is the wrong way to draw attention to a specific cause.
Double Consciousness refers to a concept first explored by WEB Du Bois. This describes the African American man and his identity having to be split or divided. In other words it “describes the individual sensation of feeling as though your identity is divided into several parts, making it difficult or impossible to have one unified identity” (WEB Du Bois). Moreover, Du Bois also expresses that Black Americans have lived in a society that has made them feel inferior, it can become extremely difficult for them to bind their black identify with their American identity. This can in turn, cause blacks to look at their
This protest started in August of 2016 by an NFL football player named Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid. They both played for the San Francisco 49ers and protested by kneeling during the National Anthem. Everyone present was confused and shocked at why he is doing it. No one ever expected someone out of the blue to begin kneeling during the few moments of unity and paying respects for others. Colin Kaepernick was soon interviewed after the
In the past few months, discussion has risen within the nation over players kneeling during the national anthem at football games. The first to kneel was Colin Kaepernick back in 2016. He wanted to bring attention to the issue of police brutality against people of color throughout the United States. Opposers believe that Kaepernick, and other football players who have followed his lead, have disrespected
Robert Penn quotes Du Bois' The Souls of Black Folk. He sums up this concept beautifully: "It is a particular sensation, this double consciousness, this sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul by the tape of world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. One never feels the two-ness-- an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings, two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder." (Penn, p.19)
The political climate that we enjoy today is much different from the political climate of our origins. The United States has come a long way from being under the rule of King George III. Although there are similar democracies around the world, the United States is unique in the way that we conduct politics. What other countries around the world regard liberty and equality as high as America? Our Declaration of Independence says it all “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of
Double consciousness refers to the struggle of living on the black side of the veil and defining oneself through the perspective of white society -- a society that rejects the combined aspects of being both black and American. These conditions create an identity crisis for black men and women. W.E.B. Du Bois describes this crisis in the following way: “The history of the American Negro is the history of this strife, -- this longing to attain self-conscious manhood, to merge his double self into a better and truer self. In this merging he wishes neither of the older selves to be lost (DuBois 1903).” The root of the problem is a lack of self-consciousness or self-definition. Thus, this essay will focus on the characters within Sula that exemplify
Double consciousness as defined by Du Bois in The Souls of Black Folk: "It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity." (The Souls of Black Folk, pp.453-470) harkens to the double consciousness felt by Lae Choo in "In the land of the Free" by Sui Sin Far. Like Du Bois, Far illustrates through the personal experiences of the characters the way whites saw people of color and how they were treated as a result of it. The "color line" as mentioned in The Souls of Black Folk is something universal when it comes to white and non white interactions. Regardless of race, non whites were treated with prejudice by whites and made to suffer through hardships because of their non white status. Both sbook discuss the theme of struggle and hardship through racial difference that leads to change and reflection. Although differing in setting, protagonists, and layout, share the same kind of pain that is universal regardless of race, gender, and age.
“The history of the American Negro is the history of this strife, — this longing to attain self-conscious manhood, to merge his double self into a better and truer self.” (W.E.B. Du Bois, The Souls of Black Folk) In Du Bois’ novel, The Soul of Black Folk, he writes about double consciousness and shows the readers that black people have known their whole lives how to manage in both “White America” and “Black America”. Du Bois shows the awareness of being both an American and an African-American. This novel centers about a minority in a world where he understands what it’s like to be both an American and black at the same time. Zadie Smith’s White Teeth is very similar to this concept of double consciousness, as it includes not only a mixed-black
The idea of double consciousness, termed by W.E.B. Du Bois, for African Americans deals with the notion that one’s self has duality in being black and American. It is the attempt to reconcile two cultures that make up the identity of black men and women. One can only see through the eyes of another. A veil exists in this idea, where one has limits in how he or she can see or be seen. This individual is invisible to the onlookers of the veil, and those onlookers may be invisible to the individual. This then alters how one can truly interpret their conscious. This concept is one that has been explored in various themes of literature,
Double consciousness is a concept proposed by W.E.B Du Bois in his book, “The Souls of Black Folk”. The concept of double consciousness illustrates the feeling that one does not have one identity as it has been split into, if not two then more, therefore making it a challenge for individuals to develop an identity which is true to the individual.
According to DuBois, this double consciousness stems from the racial stereotypes and negative judgements cast on a group of people who are not a part of the majority. As a result a black individual may behave differently in front of a white American in order to protect themselves from how the white community views them
Athletes all over the U.S have made their decision and have taken a stance on what they believe is right. Colin Kaepernick, a football player who used to play for the San Francisco Forty-Niners back in 2016, has made headlines for kneeling during the national anthem. For him, kneeling during the anthem was a gesture of protesting police brutality and social injustice. Although many people claimed that Kaepernick was being anti-american, he was just practicing his first amendment rights. The New York Times has quoted Kaepernick during a post-game conference where he said,- “Once again, I’m not
