Although this statement is completely true, the treatment of dogs is not all that vets do. Cats, cows, parrots, and horses are just a few of the many other animals that veterinarians help. As you could probably guess, the profession of being a vet requires many years of education, being that the job requires you to have a good background knowledge of issues that animals may have. In this essay, I’m going to walk you through my educational path to accomplish my goal of becoming a Veterinarian.

Veterinarians must hold a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine, pass a national licensing examination and meet any other state-specific requirements for licensing or certification. They must complete and participate in a four year Doctor of Medicine (DMV) program. Some of the courses that are in the DMV program are; Animal behavior, Veterinary pharmacology, Animal Nutrition, Clinical Pathology, Large and Small animal medicine, Diagnostic Imaging, Anesthetic and Surgery principles. Veterinarians in training will usually complete rotations of Cardiology, Dentistry, Oncology, and or Equine care. Some of the courses that will prepare them for veterinary school is; Microbiology, Animal Management, Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Nutrition, and Equine Care if I plan to go into the field of equines. To get my veterinary license I must complete a 360 question test, which usually takes about 7.5 hours (Erickson 1). Some states will require other things along with this test. Education is probably one of the toughest parts of being a veterinarian. The schooling and certification takes a great deal of time, which means I must be ready and realize that I will have a lot of schooling to pay off. There is a lot of hard work put into this job, maintaining the health of all the animal patients. The overall job description of a veterinarian is a doctor who, “care[s] for the health of animals and work[s] to improve public health. They diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals” (Veterinarian). Vets also provide emergency care for injured animals as well as provide euthanization for animals unable to be treated effectively. There are several different kinds of vets, each with different daily tasks and patients to work on. The type of vet everyone usually first thinks of is a Clinical Vet, also known as a Companion animal Veterinarian. They treat regular household pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, etc. This type of vet’s work environment usually includes being in private clinics and animal hospitals most of the time but can travel to farms and homes if needed. This is the most common field veterinarian students pursue. Another type is Equine Veterinarian. This type of vet focuses just on treating and caring for horses. They spend most of their times on ranches, and also at places like horse racing tracks and shows. Large Animal Veterinarians treat large farm animals such as horses, cows, sheep and pigs. After high school you must complete 2 to 4 years of pre-veterinary or science studies at college before applying to veterinary school. However, because the competition for veterinary school admission is so competitive, it’s a good idea to complete a full Bachelor of Science degree before applying. Veterinary schools require you to have completed courses in specific subjects before they will consider your application. Since these subjects vary depending on the school, you should contact the school you plan on attending to find out which subjects you should be taking. There are many kinds of veterinarians. There are vets that specialize in common house pets like, cats and dogs, vets that take care of exotic creatures like, lizards and snakes, and vets that treat large animals like, horses and cows. For my future career I chose a large animal veterinarian. A large animal veterinarian can treat animals from the zoo to the farm. They mainly work with horses and cattle but they know how to treat other animals. A large animal vet needs to know several types of math and how to use each type in their daily work.

Becoming a veterinarian is my first career choice. It requires that you take a highly competitive veterinary program, as well as years of studying once you do. The Nature of the job isn't as easy as it looks but you have to examine, bathe the animals, seeing if they are sick, taking x-rays, taking blood tests, check for parasites, put them to sleep for surgery, and prepare tools and medicine for the Veterinarian when they're in the process of surgery and more. It's very important to take science, computer chemistry, math, and health in high school so you can be ready for medical school. Also you need as much experience with animals as you can get. There are many programs you can take in college for being a Veterinary technician, technologist, or even both.
