The Joy Luck Club
Comparative study
The Joy Luck Club (1989), introduced the cultural values of China and America which was highly successful. It remained nine months on the Times Bestseller and was re-created into a movie which released in 1993 with the same name. Although there are not much influential differences, the visual/audio effects in movies, structures and languages, including the tones and pronunciations made some changes on the individual’s preference.
Unlike the book, the movie The Joy Luck Club added audio and visual effects to make the plot more emotional and empathic. In this case, the audio, including the background music fully demonstrated the cultural aspects of Chinese-American culture. For instance, the director solely used Chinese traditional

In the book, each chapter tells four stories of each character by the subtitles. This was successful for the readers to understand the specific backgrounds of each story because a single section only explained one character’s story. Meaning that the book is more detailed to the movie. In the movie, the scar of Anmei was created by a simple argument from her uncle and aunt. And the scene was simple and quick which the director did not put a focal point on it. But in the book, there is a subtitle called ‘AN-MEI HSU: Scar’ and the book described a lot more details about the beginning and end of the argument. Comparatively, the movie did not portray the stories in order. The flow of the stories was more fluent because it was about mentioning a story from other character’s stories. Such as when the daughters narrated the story, the stories of their mothers were mentioned and that naturally led to their mother’s stories. This allowed the audiences to be more concentrated to every story, because the flow of the plot was natural and that helped the audiences to generally accept lots of stories at the same
Today I am going to talk about how the Johnny Tremain book and movie are different in many ways. There were many important parts of the book that weren’t in the movie, that it made the movie look like it was never based off of the book. It upsets me how different the movie is from the book. Some of the differences between the movie and the book are Johnny Tremain’s hand, Pumpkin, and Rab’s death.
Comparing the differences in the book of “ The outsiders” to the movie there are a few things that have been changed. There is a significant difference with one of the deaths. A few situations are also changed . Such as the rumble and how the boys enter the hospital to see one of their friends. The intro and ending of both the book and the movies are different. There are scenes that weren’t added to the movie. The author, S.E Hinton, and the director Francis Ford Coppola deviated which parts were not as valuable and chose to cut some unimportant scenes.
The book, Freak the Mighty, has many similarities and differences from the movie based on it. Between the movie and the book, Max still learns valuable lessons from Kevin in the end and Loretta helps Max. At the end of the book and the movie, after Kevin died, Max became a more open and creative person than before he knew Kevin. Kevin taught him how to become the best person he can be. Loretta helped Max escape from Kenny’s restraints and wake him up to reality after Kevin died in both the movie and the book. These two acts of kindness greatly reflected on Loretta’s character and helped Max in the long run. In the book, Max and Kevin meet differently than they do in the movie. Also, Gwen never mentions how she knew Max’s mother in the movie
On April 24, 1967, S.E. Hinton published the book The Outsiders. Then sixteen years later director Francis Ford Coppola’s movie version of The Outsiders was released on March 23, 1983. The book is about a young boy named Ponyboy who lives with his two older brothers because his parents were killed in a automobile accident. Ponyboy goes through a lot of tough times because he is a part of this group known as the Greasers. The Greasers are a group that are known for being from the poor side of town and the Socs are the rich kids on the other side of town. Throughout the entire book the two groups kept fighting and then something terrible happened that changed Ponyboy’s life forever. The movie and book have many differences
In the Of Mice and Men movie and novel the introduction moods and details have multiple similarities and differences. To start there are more details in the beginning of the movie. In the movie we start off seeing two men running away from a lady with a ripped dress and the men chasing them. Compared to the exposition of the novel where we start off with two men who “had walked single file down the path,” (page 2) a few miles south of Soledad. I feel that in the book you had to use your imagination to create more details due to the very discrete opening. Due to the details being very different in the movie compared to the novel, the moods were also much different. When we opened the movie we were greeted by a very ominous and energetic start
The Joy Luck Club is the first novel by Amy Tan, published in 1989. The Joy Luck Club is about a group of Chinese women that share family stories while they play Mahjong. When the founder of the club, Suyuan Woo, died, her daughter June replaced her place in the meetings. In her first meeting, she finds out that her lost twin sisters were alive in China. Before the death of Suyuan, the other members of the club located the address of June’s half-sisters. After that, they send June to tell her half-sisters about her mother’s life. In our lives there are events, and situations that mark our existence and somehow determine our life. In this novel, it shows how four mothers and their daughters were impacted by their tradition and beliefs. In the traditional Asian family, parents define the law and the children are expected to follow their requests and demands; respect for one’s parents and elders is critically important. Traditions are very important because they allow us to remember the beliefs that marked a whole culture.
This essay is about comparing the Giver book and movie. The Giver is a story about a boy named Jonas who was chosen to be the community’s next Receiver of Memory. He lived in a community where everything was chosen for the citizens, and everything was perfect. During Jonas' training, he realized that the community was missing something and that there was more in the world. Jonas wanted the everybody to know that. The Giver book was then made into a movie. Though the two were based on the same story, there are three important differences that could've made them two separate stories. The three main differences between the book and the movie are Asher and Fiona's Assignments, the similarity all Receivers had and the Chief Elder's role.
An author's cultural background can play a large part in the authors writing. Amy Tan, a Chinese-American woman, uses the cultural values of Chinese women in American culture in her novel, The Joy Luck Club. These cultural values shape the outcome of The Joy Luck Club. The two cultural value systems create conflict between the characters.
The book Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and the movie Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory are same and different. Unlike the book, the movie had Willy Wonka wearing a brown top hat. Similar to the book in the movie Willy Wonka wore a purple coat. In the book Charlie was in elementary school similar to the movie. Also, in the movie he goes into the candy shop and in the book he doesn’t. Since the family didn’t have very much money do they only had one bed. Also, in the book the dad was alive and he wasn’t in the movie.
But in the movie because of the background music, it will be easy to bring the audience in. What I am here saying is that by following the background music, audiences would easily get themselves into the story and thoroughly understand the ups and downs of the plot as the background will change as the plot change. The background music can be also shown that the disposition of the character, that could help audiences get to know more about the character and to make the audiences understand the situation of the character. The purpose of the background music was to communicate the theme, create the character image, promote the development of the plot, connect video and images, describe the time and culture background and enhance the sense of the audience. The background music is one of the most important tools of foil film effect. In the movie The Joy Luck Club, they have to change the background music during different place(China/America) and different time period(When mothers were young and when they get
It’s not difficult to figure out that almost every book with a movie made from the book will have some differences and some similarities. I can almost promise anyone that they will probably never find a book with a movie that is the exact same. This essay will point out some differences and similarities between the book and the movie “Ordinary People”.
There is a big difference between the book and the series or movie. We did a little research and came out with these differences.
First of all, the book and the movie have all of the important parts of Helen Keller’s story. For example, in the beginning after Annie meets Helen, Helen locks Annie in her room. This scene shows how Helen tries to get rid of Annie even though this trick doesn’t work so easily against Annie. Another example, the next day Annie, Helen, and her family have breakfast. At breakfast
Have you ever wondered what the differences are between the movie a sound of thunder and the book? There are many differences between the book and the movie. In the movie it starts with the group back in time going to kill a dinosaur. While in the book it starts with eckels walking in Time Safari.
