ABSTRACT
The research work is on determination of optimum dosage of soda ash or lime in treating underground water in Makurdi metropolis. In the course of carrying out the work, samples of borehole and well water from five different locations of the study area (Makurdi) were obtained and analyzed in Benue State water works. The sample were analyzed to ascertain the level of hardness in samples and to determine the optimum values of soda ash (Na2CO3) and lime (Ca(OH)2) that will be used in reducing hardness and treating the sample in the study area. The locations were, North Bank, Wurukum, Wadata, High Level and Kanshio. The hardness level in the study area was found to range from 200mg/L to 80mg/L averagely; this was found to lay outside the WHO (1993) drinking water standards of 75mg/L to 100mg/L. On analysis, the hardness was found to range from 76mg/L to 100mg/L (borehole) at optimal level. Which was found to range within the WHO (1993) drinking water standard. While for well, range from 20mg/L to 80mg/L at optimal level. Which was
Solutions of 6M H2SO4, 6M NH3, 6M HCl, 6M NaOH, and 1.0 M of NaCl, 1M Fe(NO3)3, 1M NiSO4, 1M AgNO3, 1M KSCN, 1M Ba(NO3)2, and 1M Cu(NO3)2 were given in separate test tubes. The color of possible precipitates, ions, acid-base behaviour, odor and solubility rules were conducted and were reported in Table 1. The key information about a mixture of two solutions was
In the Chemistry of Natural Waters Lab we were to collect a sample of water, ranging from a fountain, stream, bottle, or tap water. After we collected the samples we all did many tests to see what the hardness was for each one. Water hardness is determined by the amount of Calcium and Magnesium in the water.(2) Water that has more Calcium or Magnesium is considered to be harder than water with less of those two elements. When you use soap and detergent, this is where you see water hardness coming into play in everyday life when you are washing things.
The results for the “Total Hardness” test varied between 20 ppm -128 ppm. The “Total Alkalinity” results varied between 28 ppm – 84 ppm. The results for the “Iron” test were between 0 ppm – 1 ppm. For the “Chloride” the results were as low as 20 ppm and went all the way to 8,000 ppm, but for most part the results were from 20 ppm – 60 ppm. The “Color in Water Low Range” test showed that the max APHA Color was 20 and the lowest APHA Color was 0, which is a great result. Results for the “Turbidity Column” test were Not Applicable (N/A). For both the “Chromate” and “Copper” test the results were 0 ppm. The results for “Zinc” varied between 0 ppm – 2
The Results from ETDA (table 7) show that tap water Mifflin Hall (400 ppm) is hardest than the four other water samples. It is followed by tap water Harleysville (340 ppm), well Water Wyckoff (320 ppm), Stream Water Raleigh (110 ppm) and Tap water Yosemite (80 ppm). This order supports my hypothesis. Tap water Yosemite is relatively soft compared to the other water samples. I have predicted my sample to be the hardness and tap water Yosemite to be the softest. Also, these results support my hypothesis in the assumption that they show that stream water Raleigh is moderately hard as expected. Nevertheless, I expected tap water Yosemite to be relatively soft but the data show that it is moderately hard. In fact, I assumed that tap water Yosemite would be slightly hard because in California ground water is stored in alluvium. They are made up of loose gravel, sands, and silts and they contain a very low concentration of divalent cations. Maybe the fact that rocks vary from the state of California due to the difference in geology might
In this report, we will be analyzing the current performance of Kingsford in the marketplace and identify the main cause of revenue deterioration. Thereafter, a comprehensive strategy and marketing plan will be presented.
Morocco is rich in mineral deposits and the third largest phosphate rock producers. Morocco has vast reserves of phosphate rocks, copper, cobalt, anthracite coal, silver, gold, iron ore, zinc, manganese etc. The quality of water in the areas surrounding mining sites is compromised during and after the mining with harmful agents such as Arsenic (As), Lead (Pb), Zinc(Zn) etc.Due to this water pollution and the fact that water resources are limited, a large number of people and livestock in villages close to the mining sites are affected with serious life threatening diseases. In such areas thirty percent of the wastewater that is untreated is discharged directly into natural water bodies. As an example, the Sebou basin that constitutes
Water plays a vital role in nearly all key processes of human life. From merely sustaining it in less developed countries, all the way up to being the cornerstone of many technological and industrial processes in modern America. The average consumption ranges from 5.4 liters in Madagascar to over 500 hundred liters in America1. This large consumption in the developed world can largely be attributed to the many technological advances and industrial processes that sustain our way of life today. However this water is rarely ever pure, usually it contains numerous minerals such as Mg2+ and Ca2+ that can contribute to scale build up in industrial processes that cause inefficiency and structural damage. This experiment serves to evaluate several filtration processes to see which is most efficient at removing minerals that contribute to water hardness and thus scale formation. First however we will gain a better understanding of water hardness.
Coal ash is a byproduct of burning coal in power plants and is composed mainly of aluminum and silicon oxides. This ash is commonly stored away in dump sites, only to leach out solutions of concentrated toxic heavy metals. Such issues are detrimental to the health of water systems, posing both a human and environmental health risk. However, there are solutions to this problem. Coal ash possesses unique chemical properties that allow for the remediation of other environmental concerns, such as the treatment of soil polluted with heavy metals, the removal of nutrients from wastewater, and the remediation of acid mine drainage in streams.
A new trend that is taking over the oral hygiene world is that of activated charcoal. Activated charcoal (AC) powder is being depicted as a natural and alternative cure for plague that is yellow teeth. There are many companies which sell the “miracle cure” for yellow teeth, with each claiming that their product is effective. The powder seems to a bit on the pricier side, with the average container being sold for $5.50 an ounce.
The reaction characteristics of basic copper carbonate 〖mCuCO〗_3⋅n〖Cu(OH)〗_2 were observed by changing the reaction mole ratio. The reaction mole ratio of sodium carbonate to copper chloride (II) was controlled from 1.08 to 1.68. Fig. 1 shows the XRD patterns of copper carbonate powder. At a reaction ratio of 1.08, paratacamite (Cu_2 Cl(OH)_3 ), beside alkali copper carbonate, was formed because of incomplete reaction at a copper content of 53.9 wt%. Lack of sodium carbonate may cause incomplete reaction with copper chloride (II) because of low pH (6.0) of the solution [12]. The copper content according to the reaction mole ratio were 57.7, 50.5, 58.8, 59.3, and 59.8 wt% at the reaction mole ratios of 1.20, 1.32, 1.44, 1.56, and 1.68, respectively.
Mary Kay Ash was a hard-working, diligent and responsible woman, who not only had an academic responsibility but a family one as well. Ms. Ash showed many virtues and one of her virtues that I believe we share is the virtue of commitment. She has shown it when keeping up with her academics when the times got difficult which is how I maneuver my life as more and more obstacles come my way. We both hold a commitment to our families, I do my best to help in the house, at our small business and help my brother and cousins with their academics. My commitment to my family stems from the gratitude and desire that I have to help them as they are not only strong and independent people but people who love me for who I am and will support me on my academic
In this task the concentration of an unknown sample of copper sulphate using colorimetry was used to find the concentration. In this investigation copper sulphate was used which is CuSO4.5H20 as a formula. To make a standard solution which was 1M, the same clean equipment was used to make up the standard solution as used to make sodium carbonate. However there was one difference and that was that the hot distilled water was used to dissolve the copper sulphate crystals. There had to be enough hot water in order to dissolve the crystals into the beaker and then add cold distilled water to cool the solution.
The captivating painting by Vincent Van Gogh, The Starry Night is a work of art completed by Van Gogh in 1889. Van Gogh had wanted to paint something that represented the night sky for some time, but many people are interested to find out that Van Gogh actually painted The Starry Night during his time at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, an asylum and clinic for the mentally ill. There is much debate over the legacy of Van Gogh, and his “Turbulent Mindstate” however we can examine much of the speculation about the artist by doing research on the painting The Starry Night. A standard acid solution like HCl can be used as titrant for the analysis of both soda ash and a carbonate-bicarbonate mixture. In the analysis of soda ash, the volume needed to neutralize the soda ash is used to compute for its alkalinity, in this experiment we obtained a 17.6 % alkalinity with an error of 15.14% In the analysis of a carbonate-bicarbonate mixture two indicators (phenolphthalein and methyl orange) were used. The first endpoint determines the half-neutralization of the carbonate and the second determines that of the
Clean water supply is essential in establishing and maintaining a healthy community. There are two sources of water supply which are the surface water and ground water. Most natural waters are not suitable for consumption as it is contaminated by pathogens and also natural chemicals and minerals. In addition, as a city grew, wastes from human activities contaminate most of the water supplies. Water treatment plays an important role to properly treat a contaminated source of water supply in order to protect the health of consumers. Water treatment process is defined as a process of eliminating pollutants from untreated water to produce a biologically and chemically risk-free water, which is both potable and palatable for human consumption
