Flashback, a widely used technique to create tension, drama and suspense in recent literary works, was mostly given rise to by a group of pioneers in the early 20th century. Arthur Miller was one such man. In his dramatic play, Death of a Salesman, he successfully uses flashback to show conflict, confusion and lack of wellbeing within the main character. The main character in the play, Willy, is often seen talking to himself (sign of mental unstability), usually about his past (pg. 16-24). Use of flashback, in this case, portrays Willy as a person who loved family life or at least hoped he would have.
