The author who inspired the topic of this thesis is Dana Thomas. As a fashion writer, Dana Thomas, has analyzed the changes in luxury fashion business. Thomas has been writing about fashion for the past twenty-five years in various journals such as Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, New Yorker, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Financial Times, and more. Dana Thomas’ two books, Deluxe and Gods and Kings, are the inspiration for this thesis. Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Lustre goes into great detail the secrets of the leading luxury industry brands, namely Prada, Gucci and Burberry, to showcase the “New Luxury” of today and how “luxury lost its luster” by featuring the manufacturing and logistical processes. Thomas exposes that many luxury brands use the same Asian factories that mass-market retailers employ, which raises questions concerning quality and craftsmanship for luxury brands.
In Gods and Kings, Dana Thomas focuses on Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. She discusses how these two were fashion’s most revolutionary designers in the past decades. Teri Agins, a senior writer at the Wall Street Journal, has publications in the Journal and wrote in 1999 The End of Fashion. Agins’ book gives a true overview of the fashion industry from the origin of Haute Couture to prêt-à-porter to mass-market consumption. Fashion emerges out of pattern-making and design, the cultivation and production of raw materials, the manufacturing process, and the distribution of the finished product. Although all this creates the materials, fashion is more than just cloth and jewels. Fashion is the expression of oneself whether it's based on emotion, fashion trends, or music videos.
There were many tragic occurrences that happened in the 1930s, but the production of fashion would not let anything stop it from becoming more current. The 1930s was the time of the Great Depression, the economic slump that swept the nations. It set people into an economical setting where they had less money to spend on the simple necessities they needed, let alone things they wanted, like clothes. Although, the actuality that people didn’t have money didn’t stop industries from producing their work. Though some people believe fashion was changed in an unfavorable way due to the severe economical situations in the 1930s, the new variety of developing fashion companies, like Vogue, gave women a more modern look, enlightened them with ideas from different cultures, and took ideas from the world’s circumstances and made them into something new.
Similar to another one of my sources, this book also gives illustrations as well as information on fashion styles, well known fashion events and movements, as well as notable designers of the 20th and 21st centuries. It also gives us a perception of the social influences of fashion. Along with that, it brings about the commercial side of the fashion industry, but my focus on that will be about how certain brands came to be. It provides information about how certain fashion trends went from the catwalk, to the sidewalk. This ties down and goes back to the idea about how fashion trends evolved or become a movement.
