We all know of someone who has a concussion or who has had a concussion before; maybe even you personally have had one. Concussions need to be taken seriously, whether the victim is under the impression that they got hit forcefully or not they could have a concussion. A concussion is a knock on the head that disturbs the brain. In a concussion the brain may become bruised as it rocks back and forth in the skull. Whatever the victim does, they shouldn’t make things worse and if their head hurts, they should not overdo anything in any of their work, just take it gentle. On average, NFL players get their brains rattled on a weekly basis with an average of 6 each, according to the NFL’s own figures. Out of all high school athletes, thousands …show more content…
Everyone loves to get at least a little physical while playing sports. Football is a major sport that has a lot of injuries and concussions in the game but many people continue to play because of the physical contact and the fun they have in the sport. Even though there is different technology being used to help prevent serious problems such as concussions many people still have serious side effects from them or worse yet die because of theirs. As claimed by, http://www.cbsnews.com/news/football-and-the-brain-nfl-60-minutes/ there has been 39 changes in the NFL to make the game safer. One change is that helmet-to-helmet hits are now illegal. To reduce the amount of head banging, the NFL and the Players Association have limited the number of full contact practices during training camp and the regular season. The league also estimates that heads slamming into the turf causes 7% of all concussions. Changes in the rules for athletic competition have thankfully reduced the number of sports-related concussions.
CTE is a later long-term consequence of having a concussion. When you receive a concussion things start acting differently in the head and if it’s bad enough the victim could be knocked unconscious. Although, not all concussions make the person black out, if they are bad enough they will. If the person, who acquired the concussion, doesn’t wait long enough there could be some serious
It has been found that the average high school football player receives somewhere near 650 hits to the head each season (Tyler). Imagine the impact this has on the brain. Then imagine how much worse the impact must be when getting hit by highly trained, full grown men. The NFL for the longest time would have liked us to think differently. “According to the doctors in the NFL’s employ, playing a game involving violent, head first collisions had no connection to future brain injuries,” reports “The Progressive” in their article “High Price of Concussions”. Finally, in 2009, “(the National Football League) acknowledged publicly for the first time that concussions suffered while playing football
Football is a sport beloved by Americans. Millions of boys from a young age enjoy playing football from recreational to dreaming of the NFL. Whether these boys end up play for their school team or the NFL, all levels of players experience head collisions. Recently, many people have questioned the severity of these head injuries, or concussions, induced by playing football and their lasting effects.
You are a worldrenound goalkeeper play for one of the best teams in the country. The left forward has the ball and is coming at you with full speed, she fires a powerful shot to the lower corner of the goal. You leap with all your might and all of the sudden, everything goes black. You wake up in the hospital bed with an excruciating headache. The trainer rushes over to check your condition and informs you that you were in an awful collision on the field. Turns out, while you were diving for the ball, the Philadelphia right forward came running at you, full speed. She kneed you in the head, knocking you unconscious. She tells you that you have a career ending concussion and you will never be able to play soccer again. This is what happened
Mike Ditka, the coach for the 1985 bears said that he wouldn’t have his kids play football. The main reason for this is because of concussions and the effect they have on athletes and children. Concussions are are a brain injury that is caused by a hard hit to the head. Many people have been severely injured from this. This couldn’t be caused by a small hit on the head. Concussions can harm many athletes and children because it can cause loss of memory or death, It can cause CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), and it cannot be cured.
The disease is caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein, named tau, which strangles brain cells. To this day, CTE has no known cure. However, it can be reversed, slowed down, or even stopped. Though there is a link between concussions and CTE, science has not proven that concussions are a direct cause of CTE. It has quickly risen as a concerning effect of repeat concussions in modern day football.
In 2007, the NFL finally started to take steps to slow down the rate of concussions in football (Lauren Ezell). Although concussions still occur today, there are specific protocols that were inserted to protect players’ health. This topic is so important to me because I am a big fan of the sport, and I would hate to see my favorite players end their career with disabling conditions. I hope to the see the NFL continually trying to find ways to limit concussions. I believe that one day football can be played without the risk of living the rest of your life with a critical
Sports are known to be competitive when it comes to winning against your opponents. The Superbowl, the Olympics, and the World Cup are very popular among different age groups in our society today. Just seeing your favorite team playing gets your adrenaline going, your heart beating faster, and sitting at the edge of our seats with one question in our mind: will they win? In the end, we could erupt with cheers, or give a cold glare. Feelings are mutual but what we should keep in consideration is the health of the athletes.
Football is a dangerous sport. It's a game played by strong minded and physically gifted
Athletes who experience a serious blow to the head on the field, court or ice should seek the attention of a medical professional as soon as possible. These individuals should leave the game and not be allowed to return until cleared by a medical professional. The new concussion guidelines based on the latest scientific research and endorsed by six major medical organization states if the symptoms last more than 15 minutes, athletes need to be monitored for up to a week and return to competition gradually. If their symptoms worsen, he or she should seek the closest emergency room. Just because an athlete states he or she 'feels fine' doesn't mean that he or she should be put back in the game. Concussion have already been the cause of ended
One of the things mentioned in the story with T.J Lang was `Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or commonly referred to as CTE. This is a degenerative brain disease caused by trauma to the head.
The most known sports in the united states is football. Everyone watches football, especially the super bowl championships some people even throw a party to support and enjoy watching. I would allow my son to play football because it can be build dedication, inspiration, and builds character.
In the world of football, big hits are something that are looked at in a positive light. They are seen as a way of asserting dominance over other players and it is celebrated by teammates. Big hits are a very crucial, almost necessary, part of the game that millions of people gather to watch every Sunday. However, in the past decade, the NFL and other organization have realized that concussions can lead to very serious problems later in life. One of these problems is known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). It is a degenerative brain disease, much like Alzheimer’s, that mainly effects individuals in high contact sports such as boxing or football. Over time, this connection between concussions and CTE has become more common knowledge and more people have started asking the question “do the risks of children playing football outweigh the benefits?”. The answer to this question is yes, football is entirely too violent for children to be playing. According to “Big Hits, Broken Dreams”, one in ten football players gets a concussion, and 35% of players have more than one. The video also states that only 50% of high schools in the United States have a certified athletic trainer on the field (CNN, 2012). If concussions are really a concern for the schools, then why are there not more athletic trainers on staff at these schools to deal with sports injuries? This also forces the public to question these schools even more because if they are willing to cut costs and not hire a
Football is a sport loved by so many people, that a whole corporation was made for fans to enjoy it, the NFL. But do the fans know the risk that football players put themselves in when they step onto that field? It doesn't matter if you have experience there is always that risk for a concussion. Even kids playing youth football or teens playing high school football are at a high risk for concussions. Obviously, whatever guidelines out there that are meant to protect football players from concussions aren't working so something needs to be changed. Personally, if I was a parent I would never let my child play football unless the helmet, tackle guidelines, and penalties for late hits were improved. However I do understand why parents allow their children to play football, it is a sport like I said, loved by many and just fun to watch.
My first research project was the dangers and preventions of concussions in sports. Concussions can be very dangerous if you are not wearing the proper equipment and do not treat them properly. For those of you who don’t know “a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull”. There are many symptoms of a concussion. “You may be suffering from a concussion if you experience dizziness, headache, off-balance, amnesia for what occurred before the head trauma, anterograde amnesia (a loss of ability to create new memories after the head trauma), difficulty concentrating, irritability and vomiting”.
According to HeadCase, 47 percent of all reported sports concussions occur during high school football. A common question is asked among the community of football whether it's’ parents of boys that are soon to be the age, which they will be eligible to play POP Warner football or experienced for retired Professional football players, “Would You Let Your Son Play Football?”. Football is a full contact sport from beginning to the end of every practice and game, players coming into hard collisions with one another throughout the time. Although the major concern about football is concussions, there are a lot of core values to be learned in football to take into the real world. I would give my son permission to play football because it teaches toughness, builds character, and promotes teamwork.
