You are a worldrenound goalkeeper play for one of the best teams in the country. The left forward has the ball and is coming at you with full speed, she fires a powerful shot to the lower corner of the goal. You leap with all your might and all of the sudden, everything goes black. You wake up in the hospital bed with an excruciating headache. The trainer rushes over to check your condition and informs you that you were in an awful collision on the field. Turns out, while you were diving for the ball, the Philadelphia right forward came running at you, full speed. She kneed you in the head, knocking you unconscious. She tells you that you have a career ending concussion and you will never be able to play soccer again. This is what happened …show more content…
The Impact test is a computer taken test that is taken before the season starts. If a player is feeling symptoms of a concussion then they would be told to take this test to see if they do have a concussion. A player has a concussion if their test score is significantly lower after being suffering a hit in the head compared to before. (Deardorff) This can help stop concussions from occurring again before a different one heals. For the most part, the impact test will only help to prevent receiving another concussion before he first ne is cleared. Impact tests mainly just helps with the diagnosis of a concussion. Also, many people think that the Impact test is just a very good way to make money but it really does not do anything good. Physician Robert Sallis thinks it is a huge scam and they were able to market the product extremely well without showing any benefits on the test. (Aschwanden) Even though the concussion test helps prevent a second concussion, it does not happen very often that a person suffers a concussion so closely to their last one. While researching to find evidence of second-impact syndrome, they had to search through about 18 million tests scores to find one piece of good evidence. With all this evidence, the impact test is not a good solution to prevent concussions from
Players cannot return to the game or cannot return to practice until they have been cleared from the team doctor as well as a neurologist
ImPACT's ongoing commitment to research and the Concussion Management Model may assist in making safe return to play decisions, which helps to limit the likelihood of long-term injury. While ImPACT assists in making return-to-play decisions, it should never
Underreporting concussions is a growing issue among young athletes for several different reasons including jeopardizing spot on the field or letting teammates down, do not want to seem weak to their coaches, parents or teammates, want their peers to think they are tough and can “take the hit”, or they do not want to be pulled out of the game or practice. Some athletes believe that if they can get up and walk away from it, they can keep playing but this is not the case. In most cases they do not feel the symptoms until a few hours after the actual impact occurs. In a study conducted by Chrisman (2013), he gave high school varsity athletes 4 hypothetical scenarios of collisions. When giving these scenarios, the “investigators” refrained from
This was a very interesting article because I never thought that it would be plausible to “diagnosis” concussions other than using a CT scan. Of course, athletic trainers can sort of gage of an athlete might have a concussion by the concussion protocol, but the reading that it gives is not one- hundred percent like the CT scan is. Even with this new technique that this article brings to the table, it is not one- hundred percent because in the article it even states that “Pinpointing these proteins can help identify some concession cases...” the key word in this sentence in some cases. The proteins that his except is speaking about is the UCH-L1 and GFAP and it is important because they increase twelve hours after the injury takes place. It does seem as if this process might be cheaper or have the potential to be cheaper than a CT scan, but it is not as accurate and I truly doubt that people will implement this practice anytime soon.
Something to support that kids should take IMPACT test is that, in the article newsela.com/read/concussions-brain-changes/id/19365/
Many private companies and researchers have taken the issue of concussions head on. Research has drastically increased throughout the 21st century. In the words of Mark Lovell PhD. founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program, “90% of what we know about concussions we’ve learned in the past five years.” These private researchers have taken different approaches to solving the issue but they are all working to achieve one goal: the reduction of concussions and the prevention of their long-term effects.
As a result, early identification is extremely beneficial to accurately examine damages to the brain because it leads to degenerative diseases. These diseases are hard to catch if symptoms are not shown in the athlete right away. The NFL has to adopt better protocol to diagnose concussions based on medical data instead of assessing by judgment (Futterman). A more scientific approach is being studied that can diagnose concussions faster and more accurately. By using a simple blood test after six hours of forceful impact, the test can display brain cells that have broken down succeeding the impact. By exercising such a test, it can rid the uncertainty of when it is safe to get an athlete back on the field without triggering further cognitive damages.
A condition named the Second Impact Syndrome was identified in 1973. The condition was said to occur when an athlete receives a concussion while still suffering from a previous one. In 2013, the Journal of Neurosurgery stated that this condition carried a 90% mortality rate (“A Timeline of Concussion Science and NFL Denial”).
Head injuries, including concussions, particularly in the game of American football, have become a subject of deep concern, much study and even Congressional hearings in the United States.
The purpose of this study was to determine the association between having a previous concussion and then experiencing concussive signs and symptoms following head impacts. It was hypothesized that previously concussed athletes would have more severe and frequent signs and symptoms of a concussion following a head impact compared to athletes with no previous concussion. To test this hypothesis, 201 college athletes participated in a questionnaire. They were asked about previous concussions and if they experience concussive signs and symptoms when they had head impacts. After the results were all collected, it showed that nearly 60% of athletes who had zero previous concussions reports experiences signs and symptoms following head impacts! compared to nearly 80% of athletes who have had a concussion. These results show a significant correspondence between previous history of concussion and the reoccurrence of concussive signs and symptoms following a head
A concussion is when you go unconsciousness for a little while caused by a blow to the head. The term is also used loosely of the after effects such as confusion or temporary incapacity. Concussion is are known as a mild brain injury that is a mild brain injury MTBI mild head injury and a little head trauma. Some experts will define a concussion as a head injury with temporary loss of brain function which can cause some cognitive physical and emotional symptoms. Symptoms may also include headache, confusion, lack of coordination. The term concussion describes an injury to the brain resulting from a hard impact to the head. By definition a concussion is not a life threatening injury but should be treated fast . The use of protective headgear can decrease the risk of a concussion when you are engaging in any of the following activities Contact martial arts sports such as boxing, karate, and others Football. Most post concussion symptoms such as headaches, sensitivity to noise and light, dizziness, fatigue and memory problems go away with about seven to ten days after the injury but sometimes post concussion symptoms can last up to about 3 months. Rarely do symptoms last longer. What can you do when you have a concussion? Some people who have had a concussion find that at first it
The NFL has made many rule changes regarding hits to the head and many other levels like college and high school leagues have made changes as well . The reason for concussion testing is because of a player known as Junior Seau . The former Charger , Dolphin and Patriot linebacker played for nineteen years in the NFL and the
Football is a sport loved by so many people, that a whole corporation was made for fans to enjoy it, the NFL. But do the fans know the risk that football players put themselves in when they step onto that field? It doesn't matter if you have experience there is always that risk for a concussion. Even kids playing youth football or teens playing high school football are at a high risk for concussions. Obviously, whatever guidelines out there that are meant to protect football players from concussions aren't working so something needs to be changed. Personally, if I was a parent I would never let my child play football unless the helmet, tackle guidelines, and penalties for late hits were improved. However I do understand why parents allow their children to play football, it is a sport like I said, loved by many and just fun to watch.
Lastly, having multiple concussions produce long term effects on athletes. This was proven by a study performed that compared athletes with a history of concussions to athletes with no concussion history using a concussion test known as: Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT). This is a computerized test that measures memory capabilities to determine if an athlete has a concussion. It was taken by the athletes prior to their season to find a baseline level. This baseline would then be used to determine if someone has a concussion by comparing it to a post-concussion result of the ImPACT. Every athlete in this study was given the ImPACT test within five days of sustaining a concussion. The results from this
My first research project was the dangers and preventions of concussions in sports. Concussions can be very dangerous if you are not wearing the proper equipment and do not treat them properly. For those of you who don’t know “a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull”. There are many symptoms of a concussion. “You may be suffering from a concussion if you experience dizziness, headache, off-balance, amnesia for what occurred before the head trauma, anterograde amnesia (a loss of ability to create new memories after the head trauma), difficulty concentrating, irritability and vomiting”.
