Not by beating the snot out of him but by taking him to her home, cleaning him up, giving him something to eat, and giving him the money that he wanted for new shoes. Sometimes a little dose of kindness can go a long way, Roger knows what he did is wrong and that sometimes you need to ask and you shall receive. Mrs. Jones changed Roger by teaching him that you need to be nice to people and by being nice you will be rewarded.

He is shown as someone who doesn’t think about his actions, but then towards the end, Mrs. Jones shows him to be more thoughtful. At the start of the story, Roger is instinctual and has a set of actions to follow through. He was trying to steal a purse from a woman and there was not any hesitation from him at all.
