In the story “The Fall of the House of Usher”, there are many connections that can be made between the house and its inhabitants. Roderick and Madeline Usher were just as unstable and oppressive as the home they lived in. You can see the resemblance considering Edgar Allen Poe’s description of the setting and comparing it to his description of the Usher’s. After doing so you can see how much an affect the house has on them. The parallels between the house and family start with the title, “House of Usher”. It is a double entendre, the house being their home and the house, as in their family. The narrator alludes to this in the third paragraph, “…it was this deficiency, perhaps, of collateral issue, and the consequent undeviating transmission,
Superstitions are a mysterious part of any culture, and those mysteries greatly influence mysterious writers. Edgar Allen Poe, one of the most famous mysterious authors, use the many mysterious encounters he faced as an asset for his short stories. A major influence was his time in Charleston, South Carolina, where he learned of the many superstitions and rituals of both the blacks and the whites of the area. His interests in horrific rituals like premature burials and zombication (which mainly involves voodoo, familiar to the Lowcountry Gullah culture) helped him to write horrific short stories, like “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Poe’s gory and eerie setting of the house itself and the off-putting characteristics of the Usher siblings expressed Poe’s knowledge of paranoia and interest of the “living dead,” which comes in the weird rituals of the Gullah culture.
Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” suggests that Roderick Usher and Madeline Usher are vampires that have an incestuous relationship with each other. The unnamed narrator reveals he has received a letter from Roderick Usher—the protagonist— who has been afflicted with an “acute bodily illness—of a mental disorder” that oppresses him. The narrator is visiting Usher’s mansion upon his request to see his friend to help “[alleviate] his malady.” Indeed, Usher appears to be an ill man when the narrator visits him. Usher seems to suffer from an “acuteness of the senses,” which means he has a hyper-sensitivity to light, sound, and taste. The fact that Usher is hyper-sensitive to light, sound and taste suggests that he is a vampire. The undead
The United States, being a relatively newer country, may not have as many famous writers as others, but it does have Edgar Allan Poe. George Bernard Shaw once claimed: “America has two great writers: Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe.” (Twain and Scharnhorst 617) Poe wrote many different things in his lifetime but he is most well known for writing stories full of mystery and horror. These stories are dark and full of suspense and the endings always seem to make one feel like Poe’s whole motivation in writing the story was to make his readers sad. Nevertheless, these tales resonate with readers because they are able connect with them in a way that brings out deep emotions. This is mainly because of Poe’s favorite theme in his writings, death.
“The Fall of the House of Usher” is a work that has gained notoriety as both a short story and a film. The short story written by Edgar Allan Poe is considered one of his finest works. The film, written by Richard Matheson, stars great actors of the 1900s such as Vincent Price. However, there are vast differences between the short story and the film. Unlike the short story, Roderick Usher and Peter Winthrop, who does not have a name in the short story, are not friends in the film. In addition, the film features a love story between Peter Winthrop and Madeline Usher. Yet, the film does retain Poe’s original description of Roderick Usher. Nevertheless, both the short story and the film are great works of a frightening story.
Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” and Julio Cortazar’s “House Taken Over” shows the traits of two genres, gothic literature and magical realism. Even though both of these literary works were made in different time periods they show how the effects of fear and loneliness can affect someone. The setting of House Taken Over and House of Usher is similar as they both take place in a house and their interior is bleak, but the two settings are different as one house is surrounded by a decaying forest and the other house is in a neighborhood.

“Fear is not real. It is the product of thoughts you create. Danger is very real, but fear is only a choice.” Fear is not something that is always real, such as when Usher was scared but there was nothing to fear yet, but the danger at the end of the story, especially for Ushers friend, was something to fear for. In the Gothic Literature short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe, the setting is somber and creates an illusion of darkness. Although Gothic Literature and Magical Realism are similar, there are also many differences, especially in their settings.
The passage foreshadows the relationship within the family by using the House as an anaology of the imploding and collapsing that will occur later to the family’s house but already occurred to their familial relationship. The passage notably enhances the theme of death, the most out of the other themes, at the hand of the imploding and collapsing of the relationship. This occurs not only figuratively but also literally as we see the last of what and who was remaining of the family; eventually disappears, through death and nonetheless leaving no more Ushers and their legacy evidently dies with
In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” and Julio Cortazar’ “House Taken Over” the short stories represent the genre of Gothic Literature. Gothic Literature is a genre that combines fiction, horror, death, and romance. Some of these traits are seen in both of these stories through characters and settings. Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Minister’s Black Veil,” and William Cullen Bryant’s “Thanatopsis” illustrate several Romantic and Transcendentalist (and anti-Transcendentalist) traits. All of these authors are regarded as very important and influential Romantic writers. Their works are renowned all across the entire world. “The Fall of the House of Usher” is a Gothic short story written by Edgar Allen Poe, which focuses on exploring the psychology of the primary character, Roderick. Hawthorne’s “The Minister’s Black Veil” is a grim tale featuring a minister who begins wearing a black veil everywhere he goes - a metaphor for his own internal despair. Bryant’s “Thanatopsis” is a more traditional form of poetry that speaks of nature and death. These works together all share several Romantic themes and together exhibit several traits reflective of the Romantic movement of poetry and art. In particular, these writings all contain darker aspects to them that likely would not have been as appreciated at the time they were written as they are now. It is clear from these writings that Poe, Hawthorne, and Bryant were forefront writers in terms of influence within the Romantic movement.

One of the central themes underlying the short story, The Fall of the House of Usher, is that of the nature of the house. The way it is described and the way it is so mysterious. Another central theme about this story is the nature of the people that live in the house. They are portrayed very much in the same manner throughout the story. Thus, they have several similarities with each other. All of which are of a bad feeling, showing how bad things are for the people and the house. These similarities are very well laid out in the story and are, I believe, meant to be something to be considered when reading it.
