Introduction
Communication is defined as the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs. One study states that 93% of communication is more affected by body language, attitude, and tone, leaving only 7% of the meaning and intent based on the actual words (Hughes, 2008). Communication is not just a verbal form; when the practice managers are facing difficulties communicating with physicians, they consider nonverbal communication. To avoid confrontation, critical information can be transmitted via handwritten notes, e-mails, or text messages.

Effective communication skills are essential to creating credibility to implement ideas. There are numerous employees all working toward a common goal in the healthcare setting. To achieve this goal, everyone must work together to figure out how to accomplish it. Nurses, physicians, clerks, receptionists and managers all rely on each other’s communication to complete tasks. Some recurring themes are differences of values and culture, learning from each other, and managers and leaders as interpreters. Every individual has a different perspective on the way they carry out tasks. This can also occur between physicians and managers or leaders. Physicians deal with patients on a more personal level and being “more interested in the wellbeing of individual patients” while managers deal with them and “administer resources on a corporate level” (Poddar, 2013, p. 194). Differing in views can lead to a “negative impact on the quality of services” (Poddar, 2013, p. 194). Both parties know the goals that they need to meet each day and one common goal is “delivery of care” even though their “thinking and priorities are different” (Poddar, 2013, p. 194). It has been said that today’s healthcare structure has become fragmented and that there is something not quite right in the planning and delivery of health services. To quote Sweeney and Griffiths (2002) “research has little direct effect on health service policy, organizational change has little effect on service provision, rational priority setting frameworks remain elusive and health economists continue to develop technical solutions that have no impact at the grassroots level.” Even at the administrative level organizations are barely capable of coping from being continuously under siege – resulting in a penchant for process rather than actual outcome indicators. This leads organization managers to present “glossy corporate images that belie problems” of the organization. Part of the problem lies in the nature of healthcare organizations being different from other sectors that have instigated cultural changes. Stakeholders in healthcare organizations “have disparate schemes of values and beliefs” while “physicians’ independent perspective often differs from organizational perspectives” (Lloyd, 2008, p.1).

Furthermore, given the amount of evidence and research that links ineffective healthcare professional and patient communication to increased malpractice risk, patient and clinician dissatisfaction, and poor patient health outcomes, the necessity of addressing communication skill deficits is of the utmost importance.
“Clear communication strategies that are mutually understandable are critical for optimal outcomes” (Milligan,Gilroy, Katz, Rodan, & Subramanian, 1999) in (Grover, 2005). The proper communication skills can improve our daily work environment, as it is often those unintended misunderstandings that create conflict. Effective communication is essential for a nurse in a leadership position. If a nurse is not able to convey or transfer pertinent information to other team members or clients, conflict or problems can arise. A nurse is able to effectively communicate through creating synergy, establishing a purpose or goal, actively listening, being truthful, and being responsible. When a nurse leader is able to successfully communicate, patient safety increases and medical errors decrease which leads to a higher percentage of positive patient outcomes. The audience for this presentation is hospital nurse leaders and executives. The culture of an organization must be reinforced starting with senior leaders. If senior leaders emulate the behavior of care, then staff and subordinates will follow.
