First, I consider my academic background to be indicative that I am a strong candidate for this internship program. I have taken many difficult classes at Macalester, including Organic Chemistry and various biology courses, and yet have maintained almost a 4.0 GPA. However, I realize that grades are not the only mark of whether one is prepared for a research program; I also have a passion for biology and desire to learn that further strengthens my case. Although I am a Biology major, considering focusing on microbiology or immunology, environmental health is very important for both of those fields, as biology and environmental studies go hand in hand with one another in many ways. For example, changes in the environment or exposures to certain substances can alter the microbial ecology of an area, or can lead to more diseases that might affect one’s immune system. I also have a concentration in Community and Global Health, which makes my Biology major even more relevant to environmental health, as the concentration emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to public health. …show more content…
This year, I am a resident assistant, which is been very useful in further teaching me to collaborate with my staff and maintaining a strict schedule with an on-call rotation. Furthermore, the resident assistant job has put me in many situations where I have to strengthen my people skills since I have to deal with many different types of people and their problems. Last summer, I also was a waitress at a local restaurant, and that taught me very similar skills as well, since I had to work with the other wait staff to provide efficient service while also handling difficult customers. While these jobs are not exactly related to science or research, I do know that people skills are helpful in a laboratory environment, as scientists collaborate with one another
Beginning next year, I plan on double majoring in Environmental Science and Biology, and I want a career in Conservation and/or Biodiversity. YCC is an ideal opportunity because it enables me to involve myself in activities oriented towards my career. Because I am dually enrolled in my high school and Western Kentucky University, I have benefitted from many opportunities to discover my passions and pursue Biology. I am currently involved in Undergraduate Biology Research and have completed several biology courses ranging from Anatomy and Physiology to Evolutionary Biology and Biodiversity in Costa Rica. Because of my favorable academic circumstances, I have had many opportunities in the field of biology, but I have obtained fewer experiences in Environmental issues. However, I am still passionate about the environment, and especially lifestyle changes that would reduce detriments to the Earth.
Twenty year old Queens, New York native, Edwin Torres is on his third (non consecutive) year at York college. While undecided about what he’d like to do after college (he’s the first to disclose he’s extremely easy going and lazy) he knows one thing. He’d like to graduate. Currently Edwin is working on a B.S. in environmental health science. EHS is the study of human disease in connection to the environment. For those that meant to google it and now won’t have to. Yep, his guy is looking to improve the quality of the earth and the people inhabiting it.
The Integrated Sciences program is vital in broadening my scope of knowledge to pursue a career in public health. In so doing, it would further my progress in applying to a graduate school for occupational and environmental hygiene at either the University of British Columbia or at the University of Toronto. This interest grew out of my childhood surroundings which emphasized critical thinking, environmental stewardship, and forming strong relationships with others. As a result, a career in the public health domain seamlessly integrates those different qualities into forming myself as an asset to others, the community, and the environment. This goal requires an interdisciplinary understanding of health determinants from the environment, of
This semester is my fourth semester with the Colorado School of Public Health my concentration is in Global Health and Health Disparities. If this semester goes well, then I would only need two more classes in the Summer semester to meet the requirements for graduation. I would need a two-credit elective class and my two-credit capstone project. I would love to use the Cuba Public Health Program as my two-credit elective course to full-fill my graduation requirements. I have taken a few courses that exposed me to the different issues in the health systems of the world. Anthropology of Global Health, Perspective in Global Health, and Food Systems are a few courses that taught me about the global health status.
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Health Science. If the opportunity arises, I would apply to work for the United States Public Health Services Commission Corps as an Environmental Health Officer. Barring that, I would purse a Masters in Public Health to allow me to become an Epidemiologist. Prior to earning any degree, I will be interning at the Indian Health Services in South Dakota this semester.
Through the College of Arts and Science at NYU, I hope to pursue a Global Public Health/Science major concentrated in Genetics and Genomics. This past summer, I participated in the Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science Program (MITES) at MIT, and I had the
My prospective internship at Ocean County Veterinary hospital requires multiple skills to be successful and productive in the field. Due to the fact that they are very selective of who they hire, and are the best veterinary hospital in the county, I would need to be very deliberate in all my tasks and pay strict attention to detail. My organizational skills, ability to retain information and pure dedication to the field will help better not only the business, but also mankind.
When trying to find a medical school that would be a good fit for my interests, I first wanted to look for a school that had a Medical Degree/Masters in Public Health dual degree. After I showed a strong interest in HIV prevention in a biology course, a professor recommended I look into the undergraduate program in Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC-CH and enroll in a HIV class in the spring. Once I was accepted into Gillings, my public health education has encouraged my curiosities in medicine and health through my classes, as well as through research. I was hired to work in the Baric virology laboratory in the Epidemiology Department my sophomore year. I will graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Public Health with a concentration in environmental health science. Combining this with a MD/MPH would allow me to integrate my education in a family practice setting to enhance my knowledge of preventive care. A strong background in public health would allow me, as a family physician, to understand not only the health of an individual, but also strive to improve the health of the greater community.
When I am finished with my Master’s Degree through Kaplan University I plan on becoming an Environmental Health Scientist. In this paper, I will explain what an Environmental Health Scientist is, the educational requirements including any certifications and credentials and the personality traits that best suit this career. I will also outline my career goals and how Kaplan can help me achieve them. Finally, I will go over where I see myself in five years.
I hope to study environmental biology, anthropology, and women & gender studies at Columbia. When I took neurobiology and AP Biology, I loved learning about the different systems in the body and discovering the connections between them. Currently in AP Environmental Science, I enjoy incorporating the ideas I learn in my classes, from economics to French, to develop my understandings of the global processes that sustain all life forms. Because of love for connecting multiple disciplines and love for animals, I have been attracted to pursuing a major in environmental biology. Since second grade, I have been a vegetarian and an advocator for conservation of woodlands in my area. I want to help conserve the global environment and prevent further
In approaching my junior year at UC San Diego as a Public Health major, keeping an eye open for, and pursuing any avenues of interest in this field is of great importance to me. As I have learned in the past couple years at UCSD, the field of Public Health is vastly expanding and I recognize that the opportunity to participate in a research project associated with my area of study will broaden my understanding and give me “real world” experience. My attention was drawn to your research project not only because of my major, but also the subject matter.
The program will support me in accomplishing my long-term career goal of formulating solutions and solving problems to control and prevent environmental health diseases by applying nutritional interventions. To accomplish my long-term career goal, I have short-term goals that I intend to complete during my doctoral studies. These goals include expanding my knowledge of environmental health sciences through completion of curriculum, receiving strong faculty mentorship, conducting collaborative interdisciplinary research, accessing diverse and underserved populations and translating research into practice. Although, I have conducted research in the field of environmental health, my academic career did not provided me with the opportunity to advance my environmental health science knowledge. The program is appropriately structured for students develop knowledge and strategies to measure and control critical environmental health issues through completion of course curricula.
After finishing my Undergraduate, I have seen it wise to purse masters in public health, an area that I have much interest in. Having pursed a Bachelor of Science, Biological Sciences, minor in psychology, expanding my knowledge in the field of public health has been my next option. The vast knowledge that I have gained learning and working can help me while pursuing this program. Given the chance I would be able to fulfill my career goals.
Through this program, I would gain a wide breadth of knowledge pertaining to lab techniques, which are applicable to public health. Environmental exposures relating to chronic diseases are pertinent in today’s world as the prevalence and mortality from chronic disease continues to increase every year. Understanding how to better diagnose and recognize markers of exposure and chronic disease form an analytical/biochemical lab perspective will help me as a public health professional in tracking the epidemiological trends of chronic and infectious diseases as well due to increased reliability screening tests. At my time at the University of Texas, I have had great opportunities to play an active role in public health. I am part of something called the “Student Health Advisory Committee” at UT.
My long term goals include advancing my knowledge in the public health field and to use my newly acquired skills to impact the community in a positive way. I intend to accomplish this by becoming a health care administrator or working at an institution focused on education and disease prevention. I hope to use my research and educational background to monitor health hazards and find solutions for them. Enrolling in the Masters in Public Health program at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health will provide me with the tools necessary to succeed in achieving this
