City Year Reflection Essay

For a majority of Earth’s history, its populous has been free to roam and live off of the land, maintaining a balance between the habitat and its inhabitants. However, as technology develops the earth is placed at an even bigger disequilibrium. In the places where massive sequoias reigned, high-rise apartments now stand. Just as water rushed through rivers, cars drive down streets. The populants of Earth continue to innovate, industrialize,and urbanize, but at what cost?

Roseburg, Oregon, is a small, rural, timber-town, located in Douglas County, within the Umpqua River Valley. It became a notable town when the timber industry took off, bolstering the city. With a current population around 22.5 thousand people (The City of Roseburg, 2017), Roseburg is far from a sizeable town, but has a community with sizeable traits, strengths, and concerns that are of a significant value.

For this article analysis, I chose, ‘You’re Making our City Look Bad:’ Olympic Security, Neoliberal Urbanization, and Homeless Youth by Jacqueline Kennelly. She studied the effects on the homeless created by Olympic preparations. The article specifically studies the events that took place surrounding the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada. Interviews with the homeless, witness citizens, and city officials helped bring to light the conclusion that preparations for the games negatively impacted the homeless in the community. This negative effect is directly related to the universal theme of the article: Police must purify the city of the homeless to insure the city’s best representation of their host town for the Olympics. Due to this desire to impress, authorities cracked down hard on the homeless in the months leading up to the big event. Laws that had usually never been enforced, such as jaywalking, loitering, and even skateboarding, were now strictly enforced. The homeless were asked to move to different locations, farther away from where the games would be held, until after the Olympics had taken place. Sentinel City appears to be a primarily urban area with very little open space. The houses are mostly multi-family complexes like apartments, condos, senior and independent living centers, that are constructed from brick. Industrial Heights and Casper Park District have older, more dilapidated buildings that were probably factories years ago. Trash and graffiti are abundant within this area. Nightingale Square and Acer Tech Center have more well taken care of lawns, less graffiti, more historical places, and sophisticated dinning and shopping options.

Sophomore year, I joined my High School's division of Kiwanis Key Club. The club prided itself with their devotion to community service. I thought that the club would be a great vehicle for me to assist my community while creating and expanding my relationships. However, I was greatly disappointed in the club my Sophomore year. There appeared to be little leadership present, so hardly any community service successfully took place. I made it my goal to gain a leadership position and turn the club around. Junior year, I was elected as President of the club and was re-elected to the position my Senior year.

An emerging issue is that of urban sprawl. While some aspects of urban sprawl has been seen since ancient times, this phenomenon has started gaining the most momentum in the past century, aided by the advancement of technology, especially with the rise of mass produced automobiles, houses and highway systems. Many people unknowingly contribute to this environmental problem, as is the nature of it. Urban sprawl deals with the growth of the suburbs, the area between the urban and rural areas of a city. Most of America’s largest cities and states, in terms of population, are prime examples of urban sprawl. Opponents of urban sprawl usually cite the government as a major cause of sprawl. The community that I will be describing is the city of Long Beach. In this city there are many people of age and ethnicity. This city is very diverse in having many people of different cultures and backgrounds. Downtown Long Beach is where people go to eat, have fun and hang out near the Pike. At the Pike is where you’ll find a lot of young people going to the movies or shopping. In this city it is filled with young adults and they are the majority of the community. A lot of the young adults have jobs and there are some that are going to school. Younger adults are more prone to trying new things which sometimes can lead into a health issue. In this city I will be discussing a main health problem that might be relatable to other cities. The health problem that will be discussed is the use of tobacco products in young adults. Some products are cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes, chewing tobacco, and hookah. These products are used daily by young adults in this community.

The major cities of the United States are all very interesting, after I analyzed my decision; I decided to research the great city of Boston, Massachusetts. Boston was founded on September 17, 1630 and has a rich historical background making it a very important city in the United States. “The city of Boston was the home to several important events during the American Revolution such as: the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, the Siege of Boston, Battle of Lexington and Concord, and the Battle of Bunker Hill.” (Snow, Caleb H. (1828). History of Boston. Abel Bowen.) These were all significant events that helped shape the city Boston has become today.

Buffalo New York, a city in western new york located between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, two of the great lakes, was once known as an industrial capital in the twentieth century. The city has now shifted into a more sustainable lifestyle, taking the once industrial factories and transforming them into different attractions. As of today this is their sustainable triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit:

As someone walks over the grates in the sidewalk, they can feel the wind rush up from the subway cars flying through the tunnels. While they continue walking down the street and looking at all the different people that they pass, they can smell the hotdogs being cooked in the food truck. In the distance, they hear a siren weaving through the congested narrow streets of this busy city. New York City is a one of a kind type of place. It is the only place in the world where so many different cultures and backgrounds are all in one place. Along with the multitudes of different types of people and cultures, New York City truly is the city that never sleeps. The city that never sleeps, New York City, is full sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and feels.

Following college, I moved to Portland, Oregon and looked for ways to continue developing my skills and fostering my passion for social responsibility. I started at Impact NW as an AmeriCorps member, where I served two terms helping run the AKA Science program. In my role, I managed hundreds of volunteers, wrote curriculum, and trained instructors; but above all, I learned how to work with corporate partners. Aided by corporate volunteers, our program served thousands of students each year. I quickly realized the importance of establishing meaningful, long-term relationships. Companies gave back to our community and in return we provided them a chance to hold an engaging experience for their employees. Every committed corporate team we cultivated helped us build capacity and redirect vital resources back into our program. We also encouraged volunteers to share their skills and as a result they would provide us with amazing insights. For example, one group of volunteers from Nike world headquarters helped streamline our processes by sharing ideas from their work in lean manufacturing. These experiences sparked something for me and I realized that my strengths as a creative thinker and a leader and my passion for giving back unite.

Living in America is a fantasy for a lot of people, but living in New York City is something even better, and more magical than any fantasy.

Every time I hear this song it makes me long to leave all of my responsibilities and head off to the city of dreams. A trip to New York has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I have always wanted to visit the place of tall buildings, history, and where culture is intertwined with its people. I have wanted to live the fast pace life of a New Yorker, where I could stand outside and see, smell, and taste all of the experiences that this city has to offer. I have been building and building this ideal image in my mind for so long. If I ever get to New York, will I be disappointed by the city that never sleeps? The city that is a part of almost every movie I watch. Can New York live up to the expectations I have

          The city I propose as a perfect city, would be as close to an ecocity as possible, although have some differences. For example, for electrical needs, I would suggest the city have a solar power plant, but on those desperate times, energy would be bought from other electrical plants from nearby towns or states.
