As part of my Christian Ethics class, I volunteered in St. Joseph Home Care for three hours. It’s an organization led by Ukrainian nuns and they have been for years now. The Home Care is mainly filled with elders and primarily are Ukrainians or Canadians. During the time I volunteered, I learned many things about myself and others. Also, I experienced new things that influenced me.
My best experience was when I met an old man named Peter. I remember Peter as a funny and cool person. Peter was probably the best part in volunteering at St. Joseph because he was very fun to be with. He loves to sing very loudly and it’s just amusing to watch. This one time, Peter beckoned me to come to him and I still remember his warm smile. He took my hand

The overall atmosphere in St. Joseph was absolutely pleasant because I was around people that were absolutely welcoming, warm and kind people. Not only that, I was treated nicely because my mom works there too and they knew me since I always visit my mom. So, they weren’t strangers to me.
During my time in St. Joseph’s, I was the only student at Ed Feehan, who volunteered there, but a student from Holy Cross also volunteered there too. His name was Ben. Ben was extremely cool and funny and we got along very easily. Ben arrived earlier than me and I only got the chance to spend thirty minutes with him.
The Imitation of Christ
The way I imitated Christ was when I showed people the true meaning of kindness and cheerfulness. What I did was a great example of what Jesus did for his people. He helped and in return, he brought back the idea of contentment to the people. Not only I served the people, but most importantly, I served Jesus. He expected us to follow his way meaning to help each and everyone, no matter who the person is.
According to Matthew 25:40, “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ Matthew 25:40 And Hebrews 6:10, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” Basically, these two gospel are very similar to
This also inspired me to become more heavily involved in a number of volunteer activities in and around the small town, which was now my home, such as school health camps, free medical treatment camps in remote villages, blood donation camps, and something very close to my heart. An organization called “A Clarion Call for Justice” created by a group of peers and myself wherein we raised funds and provided food, clothing and other basic amenities to orphanages, leprosy homes and blind schools in our city. I will never forget my experiences with the leprosy homes. These were homes provided to people ostracized from their villages as a result of disease, with little food and no money. Unable to interact with their family and loved ones as before, they were imprisoned in their isolation even when they were living among each other. Spending quality time with them allowed me to not only learn about their disease as a physician, but to also connect with them as a fellow human being and truly empathize with their suffering. Once I was able to establish trust among those living in the home, the amount of warmth and love they had despite of what they have had to experience in their lives was truly
I have volunteered our local chart choose around my neighborhood that have partnered up with the Houston food Bank . Once a month on a Saturday the Houston food Bank sends a truck full of food and the church distributes the food to people in need around the neighborhood. I along with others would work behind the scenes and package all the food into a box and prepare for it to be distributed. Volunteering for this cause was super fulfilling. Regardless the hot weather I would wear again I knew that it was going to such a good cause. Just imagining a family who would otherwise struggle to have a meal to eat would now have a whole feast f have a whole feast ready on their table for their families.
During my volunteer hours I learned a lot about my own community I that I have not been able to experience. For example I have never been able to participate in so many writing programs and workshops in my local high school, this is because I also did not attend my own local high school because my mother did not allow me to instead, she asked me to attend a charter school. By partnering with LA826, I was able to attend different writing workshops where I would help different high school student write essay, cover letters, and personal statements. Furthermore I believed that most of my activities consisted of just being able to listen to some of the students.
Daoism is one of the main philosophical traditions in China and the East. Daoism uses nature as a guide to understand the way to live and by using common themes like the Yin and Yang and The ‘One’ or better known as the child, the Daoist Sage reflects a harmonised way of living. These two themes from chapters stated above help identify the meaning of Daoism, and what this way of living reflects.
I was able to volunteer at a hospital and at the tzu Chi clinic. You learn a lot with having the opportunity to volunteer in many
I volunteered at my local domestic violence shelter called JCCDV or Jennings County Counsel on Domestic Violence. Volunteering at this shelter has taught me lots of strategies that I hope to use in the future. The shelter is only 5 years old and is making itself more known every day. The staff does hosts events for the community and they go into schools to talk about what services they offer. JCCDV firmly believes in self-empowerment. It is important to them that the people they shelter try to make a better life for themselves.
My service ministry was Kentucky Refugee ministry. I mentored a refugee family who are from Cuba and helped teach their daughter, named Maria, English. I also helped teach them cultural aspects of America, like how we shake hands when we meet someone new, and we wave to people we know. Through my work I have meet one of the kindest, funniest, most generous families I have ever met. They have little to nothing but they are always offering to help. Maria is learning English quickly and is able to communicate with complete sentences. They are always eager to learn and work hard for their children and families.
Volunteering has been an essential part of my life in the past few years. As an immigrant to Canada, I deemed it my responsibility to serve my community here and back home. Hence when I got ample of opportunities to get involved I always seized them.
at the orphanage, I was able to help build a sidewalk and a garage for
The cultural experience that I decided to participate in was volunteering at a nursing home. Hospice centers focus on the care of chronically or terminally ill patients. Volunteering at such a center would require training and certification and a clean bill of health. Nursing homes require similar training for some forms of volunteer service, however there are other options available that still allow direct interaction with residents. I chose to volunteer at the LakePoint Nursing and Rehabilitation Center that is located in my hometown. My goal was to directly engage with the residents there so that I could better understand their experiences and overcome my feelings of discomfort.
Volunteering to feed the homeless is truly an eye opening experience to what reality is. There is an estimated one hundred million homeless people in the world who are starving and are trying to find a way to survive. On a day-to-day basis, we see homeless people everywhere such as on the streets, by the freeway asking for money so they can feed themselves, or maybe even feed their own family. One day, my mom and I decided we had to take action after witnessing so many homeless people on the streets. When people are in such a difficult situation, their only option is to beg for money because they have no roof over their head, and no food to eat. Many of these people are suffering from their own decisions, unemployment, or for other personal reasons. There are many homeless people who are sick and suffering from severe mental illnesses. It breaks my heart seeing homeless people in the streets, so I knew I had to take action and help out someway. The experience of volunteering to feed the homeless was most certainly a life changing experience. It made me realize how grateful I am for my life, how important it is to help those in great need, and to never take a meal for granted or roof for granted. This event was one that happened in the spur of the moment but has also changed me as a a person by becoming more involved and helping out more in my community , learning to never taking anything for granted, and by not assuming all homeless people are bad people as such.
I chose to visit the Temple Beth-El for my Spiritual paper. The Jewish Temple in the downtown area of San Antonio is a very gorgeous building. I did not know what to expect or how they would receive me. There was a greeter who welcomed me and informed me of what kind of service they were having. I was immediately directed to some ladies who were eager to chat and welcome me as well. I was so surprised on how welcoming and inviting everyone was and it was quiet refreshing.
At church, in addition to my participation in the worship services, I volunteered at our church’s soup kitchen, medical camps and elementary school for underprivileged children. These experiences opened my eyes to the deprivation of love and care in the world and a dire need of God’s grace for people at large so they could receive forgiveness, healing and restoration in their lives.
To serve my high school using my leadership skills I decided to volunteer at my school to help tutor my classmen. It wasn't anything I expected, my first thought of helping my classmen that needed tutoring were either trouble makers or slackers. When I got there I noticed most the kids there just needed help understanding the criteria and studying it. As a result I gain some perspective of learning pace of others.
From this experience volunteering I will hopefully be able to continue tutoring or helping students who are struggling in school. I am going to remember this experience when I am a teacher and be able to pay more attention to the students who are struggling and try my hardest to make sure that no one falls too far behind. I will also make sure that all my students get the help that they need in order to succeed. Overall this experience has taught me a lot and enlightened me with new perspectives from where people come from and their home
