During my volunteer hours I learned a lot about my own community I that I have not been able to experience. For example I have never been able to participate in so many writing programs and workshops in my local high school, this is because I also did not attend my own local high school because my mother did not allow me to instead, she asked me to attend a charter school. By partnering with LA826, I was able to attend different writing workshops where I would help different high school student write essay, cover letters, and personal statements. Furthermore I believed that most of my activities consisted of just being able to listen to some of the students.
Since manual arts is located in the inner city, many of the kids feel like they do
As a volunteer I've learned the value of service to others and to the community, and I've seen the impact it has on those involved. I’ve seen so many people, especially through church outreach, positively affected by those who use their time and talents to serve others. Although volunteering has benefited me externally in many ways, such as my Eagle Scout Project and NHS hours, I’ve also gained a greater understanding of who I am as a person. I’ve learned how important service is and how it can benefit myself and others around
Volunteering has taught me that there are many ways to contribute to the community and as small or large those contributions may be, they all make a difference. Volunteering also allows you to meet new people who share common interests as you and it unites people from diverse backgrounds to work together to give back to the community. Writing book reviews and contributing something so small, can have a great influence. Because I value reading and enjoy it as both a hobby that also has educational benefits, I take pride in knowing I am urging other young people to read and gain as much from it as I have. Taking part in the adopt a shelf program has taught me valuable organizational skills and also assists the library staff in keeping the library an organized and productive environment. By joining the interact club, I have gained a new sense of awareness, respect, and empathy for others in the community. Prior to joining interact, I was not aware of how many people around us are in need, and just how it easy it is to make a difference. By donating a bag of clothing or nonperishable foods to fundraisers, each individual can have significant impact on the lives of others in the community. My personal experiences and involvement in both interact and volunteering have shown me that it is crucial for everyone to give back to the community in order to make a difference, and has urged me to get involved and find more ways in which I can contribute to
While volunteering at Discovery Challenger I have exclusively worked with a blind man named Geno. My service to the Discovery Challenger Program has positively affected the community in that the athletes that required a helper were able to have me as one despite the limited number of volunteers who helped the athletes. Another community service I committed myself to while in high school was the club Life is Delicious. Life is Delicious is a club that between two and three times Year members of the club cook a warm meal at the high school, and then some go to the St. Vincent DePaul Homeless Shelter in Waterbury. At the end of my sophomore year I was named Co-President of the club. As a member of the club I went to all of the cooking and serving activities and was able to help the homeless of Waterbury by giving them a warm meal. The most impactful service I performed in my opinion was during my junior year when I was the organizer for the Penguin Plunge. During my junior year I thought that it would be a good idea for the basketball team to do the Penguin Plunge in order to raise money for Special Olympics Connecticut as I had done so in the previous two years. So, I approached the athletic director
One particular activity that I feel has made a difference in the community is my participation in Mini-THON, a student-led philanthropic organization that raises money for research in pediatric cancer and benefits Four Diamonds and Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. I have served as the Junior and Senior Co-Chair, or President, for the past two years, respectively. Each year, my responsibilities have expanded from simply attending meetings and contributing ideas for fundraisers, to actively coordinating meetings and organizing fundraisers with local businesses. For example, our club held our first annual “Teenie-THON” for elementary school students. We spent countless hours creating advertisements and permission slips for the participants.
Over the course of my academic career, I have volunteered with Key Club at my school and other various places, such as the Poe Center for Health Education and WakeMed Health and Hospitals. Involvement with each organization has had a tremendous impact on my character. Often, while at the Poe Center, I had hours alone to create educational tools, file papers, and enter data into spreadsheets which taught me responsibility and integrity. I always strived for the best when I completed tasks at the Poe Center and at WakeMed. Each organization has been impacted through my volunteer services. With Key Club, we had monthly trips to the senior home. Each time I visited the senior home, the elder’s faces would light up because many of them did not have
Assisted young children between the grades of preschool to 8th grade in their education. I decided to volunteer because the children of today will be the children of the future and the more smart and educated they are the better they will be in the future. Another reason I helped was because it is hard for young children to adapt to the lifestyle of constantly moving from one place to another. Since their parents are migrants it can have a negative impact on them and their education. I remember one little girl is from Florida but every summer her parents move up to Michigan to work in the fields, but once the harvest is over they move back to Florida. She was behind in school and with the help of teachers and myself we motivated and helped her out so she was able to catch up. I really enjoyed volunteering the past two summers ago at the summer migrant program. If I had another opportunity to help I
In todays society there are many things that people can be involved in. One is volunteering. Local organizations around my community are always looking for people to come in and help volunteer with the young and the old. A local Boys and Girls club is one that I volunteer at when ever I get a chance to. Volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club has allowed me to help the boys and girls to have a safe place to come learn and grow while having fun. It is a place where young people can come and know someone cares about them. Volunteering makes a difference in the lives of boys and girls in the community. (Volunteer1) Volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club has taught me more about the organization, what a volunteer does, and what I can learn from volunteering.
I have been a part of different activities for my community service. I have helped the TLC preschool afterschool with cleaning tables and toys once all the children have gone home. I have also been to the shelly baird school where they disabled kids go for schooling and helped out there with the students doing their work and played games .I am currently in “Dude Be Nice Club” and recently we participated in project night night where we would gather donated security blankets a book or stuffed animal and deliver them to children who have very little in homeless shelters. My community service in this case helped me realize that there are people out there who need some encouragement to help them get back on their feet and realize in life that
Being new to Iowa just three years ago, volunteering in community events was a great way for me to build relationships and get my name out in the community. My sophomore and junior year at William Penn, I participated in Education Club, which opened the door to many great volunteer opportunities. I believe these experiences really helped me build strong relationships with people in the community. These volunteer opportunities also got my name out there in the community, which will help me when I build relationships with my students’ parents.
She explained that volunteering not only offers the chance to give something back to the community, but also aids her in developing new skills and gain a better understanding of the USA. She has volunteered at a variety of settings including in school, the town’s library and food bank. From the beginning of her freshman year, Linge became a member of the high school’s “Interact Club.” Students in this club are required to develop a plan, and execute community service projects both within the community and outside of it. The goal is to allow students to connect with community leaders, develop leadership skills, make new friendship within the school, and better our community. This club has strengthened her commitment to helping others.
With the aim of educating myself and to aid local and international communities I began to volunteer in local non-profits such as United Muslim Relief, Pillars of Service, and MCRC Free Community Clinic. Through these organizations I had the opportunity to volunteer at homeless shelters, raise awareness for international relief efforts such as the Syrian refugee crisis and the Rohingya crisis in Burma and Bangladesh, and volunteer in a clinic for low-income
When I was volunteering at N.Y.P.Q., us the volunteers we in charge of bringing material throughout the building. The nurses on both the, pediatrics, fifth floor, and sixth floor, asks me to bring down blood bank document's, specimen to the chemistry lab, and pick ups on another floor throughout the building. I now knew where everything is but when it was my first few weeks here I always got lost. It was my second week volunteering at the hospital on the fifth floor and Monique, the clerk, asked me to bring down specimen to the chemistry lab because the specimen they had originally received was insufficient. I asked her for direction which led me to the correct part of the building, but I still couldn't find it. I tried looking at the signs, but the chemistry lab sign did
During my freshman year at Louisiana State University (LSU), I became a member of a volunteer organization- Geaux BIG Baton Rouge. This organization is a large, one-day service experience that unites LSU students and the surrounding Baton Rouge community. Ultimately, the goal of this organization is to encourage the entire student body to serve our neighboring residents, regardless of their socioeconomic status, as well as the local organizations that work tirelessly to improve the city that we call home. As a college student, being a volunteer was an interest of mine. I joined this organization, and our volunteer efforts focus on real needs by working on projects identified by Baton Rouge residents and organizations within the following areas: Old South Baton Rouge, Mid-City, and North Baton Rouge.
From this experience volunteering I will hopefully be able to continue tutoring or helping students who are struggling in school. I am going to remember this experience when I am a teacher and be able to pay more attention to the students who are struggling and try my hardest to make sure that no one falls too far behind. I will also make sure that all my students get the help that they need in order to succeed. Overall this experience has taught me a lot and enlightened me with new perspectives from where people come from and their home
When I consider all the rewards of volunteering for a community organization, the pride and joy of feeling like I am assisting the community is also part of the spoils that benefit my own interests. Volunteering gives me an excuse to feel good about myself while furthering my own goals. With how busy my life is right now, I would have never considered going out to help the community. Now that it’s a part of my academics, I can attempt to give back and help others. I know this is selfish, but I’m only human. Put plainly, the truth in the matter is that I chose community service learning so that I could do what is expected of me and write about how helping a community affects my own thinking.
