For as long as I can remember, or since the first time I met a nurse, I knew that was what I wanted to do. I have always held a great deal of respect for those who care for others in their time of need, and sacrifice their own emotional health to be strong for someone else, when they could not be strong for themselves. For several years my fear of being unsuccessful held me back from pursuing this dream, until I decided to finally take the first step and become a certified nursing assistant, and enroll at Clinton Community College to begin my journey to becoming a registered nurse. In the summer of 2014 I had decided to take control of my life and pursue my dream of working in the field of healthcare.

I've always wanted to work in the nursing field since I was just a little girl. I grew up around nurses, EMT’s, and Pharmacy Technicians. It finally occurred to me that I wanted to be an Registered Nurse when I sat and watched my great grandma pass away. She was on bed rest and a bunch of nurses, and hospice came every day to help her. I watched and observed them, and imagined myself as a registered nurse.

I remember sitting in my advising meeting with my guidance counselor in high school talking about my Senior Packet. One of the questions she had asked me was “What do you want to be?” I remember answering her confidently and saying “I want to be a neonatal nurse.” For as long as I could remember, I always knew I wanted to be a nurse. My mother telling me about the amazing nurses that took care of me while I was a premature baby was so inspiring. I knew that I wanted to help people and work with babies. After getting rejected from every nursing program I applied to my senior year of high school I knew that my dream of becoming a nurse was going to be very difficult.

What happens when people get sick or injured badly? They would go to the hospital where they are greeted by compassionate and well-trained nurses. Nursing is an excellent medical career for those who are hardworking, compassionate, and willing to devote many hours into helping others. However, it is demanding. Nonetheless, I know that I have chosen the right path based on my personality and passion. The reasons why this career is a proper choice are presented as such: my results of the Myer-Briggs test, hemispheric dominance, receptive learning style, and Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences. Percentages include: 44% Introverted, 12% Intuitive, 16% Feeling, and 34% Judging. Being introverted means that I get energized by being alone and get drained from being around people. I would have to adjust being around people and communicating for an averaged twelve hours, but I don’t feel discomfort around people. Choosing a right career path can be tough. Especially, when the parents are involved. Parents want their children to have a better life in the future so they want their children to be educated. When they are successfully graduate from the college they can get a high paying job and earn much more than their parents. However, does everyone listen and follow their parents’ decisions about the career? What happen if kids didn’t want what their parents told them to do? Is there a compromise and or one side needs to give in? It was a tough decision for me too. There was a lot of pressure on me. I was hesitated and somehow worried when my parents were involved, but I knew what I want for my career.

Every child wants to “be something” when they grow up. A doctor, a lawyer, a veterinarian, the list continues indefinitely. Most people fixate on one particular career; even if it changes, at any given moment they have one goal. For some reason, that never happened for me. My friends and family would ask “what do you want to be when you grow up?” and I would immediately rattle off a laundry list of different things. “An inventor, a scientist, a dancer, a chef, a translator! I’m going to learn every language in existence!” was my excited reply. Apparently I was quite the ambitious child.
