Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus achieved remarkable success in the New World by discovering new lands and presenting an opportunity for new development. Over the course of four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, Columbus ignited the conquest and colonization of land in the New World. He recorded his experiences in journals and letters for future navigators and sailors to read and learn from. The benefits that arose from his expeditions were known as the Columbian Exchange, which included the transfer of people, resources, and culture, all of which significantly impacted society worldwide. His world changing legacy impacted the development of the territory in the New World and increased trade, resources, and economic stability for Europe.
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451 as the son of a merchant, most likely into a Christian household. As a teenager, he worked on a merchant ship and gained experience in trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. He continued similar jobs at sea until his first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean in 1470, when the French attacked his ship along the Portuguese Coast. Despite his sunken ship, Columbus floated to Lisbon, where he married Felipa Perestrello and had a son. At this time, he also began studies in mathematics, astronomy, and navigation, thus inspiring him to begin formulating his world changing plan. After the death of his wife, he moved to Spain, remarried and had another son. Meanwhile, he
At Christopher Columbus Middle School, the students who were moving on to Clifton High School were given a spectacular farewell bash in the form of a circus-themed dance.
Christopher Columbus was born in Italy in the 1400’s but sent by the Spanish to find a new path to the Indies, because in his time there
If someone were to ask you who founded America, who would be your answer? Although many accusations have been thrown around, such as Christopher Columbus, the Vikings, or even Native American civilizations, there is historical evidence to back particularly one of those explorers up. This argument vocalizes the inaccurate portrayal that was taught about Christopher Columbus being the first to discover the Americas when in fact the Vikings came across the Americas prior to Christopher Columbus.
Hooray or not? Not! Christopher Columbus day should not be celebrated! Who wants to celebrate an awful man who wasn’t even the first person to discover the U.S. He also killed thousands of people!
Some say that Columbus Day shouldn't be a holiday or that the name should be changed, I believe that we should get rid of the holiday. When you are little, you are taught Christopher Columbus discovered America and he's a good person; however, in reality, none of that is true. Columbus didn't discover America, he found some islands in the Caribbean like Haiti and Cuba. In addition, he treated the Natives there with harsh cruelties. Columbus also brought over diseases that lead to the death of many natives because they weren't exposed to measles, influenza, small pox. “Christopher Columbus introduced two phenomena that revolutionized race relations and

On October 9th, most people in America rejoice as they get to sleep in later than usual. October 9th, Columbus day, is a day recognized in American culture as a day to celebrate the accepted founder of America. October 9th however, is also Leif Erikson day. Leif Erikson is the Norse viking who really discovered the North American continent, and he did so over 500 years before Columbus was even born.
The discovery of the Americas, has been thoroughly investigated, studied, and debated by historians ever since Christopher Columbus happened upon Cuba in 1492. Columbus has been described as a “resilient, courageous, and confident” explorer that discovered the New World of the Americas. Some historians question whether Columbus, and European conquistadors, like Cortes, conquered the new world ethically and if the destruction of indigenous races to further advance Spain’s territories and influence was morally just. Howard Zinn, author of A People's History of the United States (2003), has a bias that North America was explored and invaded primarily to gain monetary riches. This aligns with his belief in a struggle of social classes. In this
On the second Monday in October, Christopher Columbus is celebrated for “discovering” the Americas. Since preschool and all through middle school, children are taught that he was a great Spanish explorer who sailed to the Americas on the Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Children are taught that he is a hero for the discovery, and that we ought to celebrate him. This becomes a local issue because many locals believe that Columbus should not be celebrated. They argue that through Christopher Columbus’s tyranny and greed, Native Americans were slaughtered, lost their homes, and the Trail of Tears took place.
I agree with this article. Your argument, saying that Italian- Americans are perceived as silly, or romantics, is very true. Italians are portrayed through movies or jokes as over the top, emotional people. I also think by saying Columbus Day is more about the people he represents, rather than himself, is correct. He's the model of what an Italian-American can achieve and accomplish.
I must begin by telling you that my father is a historian and I cringed while watching this video. There was so much left out and a lot of information misrepresented. Because my great-grandparents are still living so we have records of 10 generations in our family. I can proudly say that a lot of my family's history and culture is being wiped from history books around the world as if it never existed. Our family lineage traces back to the Moorish empires which reigned in northern Africa and Europe for more than 700 years. There were clear lines of trade between the west and east, and though not publicly known as if it was some big secret Columbus knew where he was going because he had a Moorish navigator guiding his ship, thus the Indian" spices" notation The moors had spices from the moors has spices from the east but had long been trading with the Africans from the south and the natives in the west.. African were trading with the American natives long before Columbus and this is documented. I find through cultural bias and documented history that with Columbus came not only the fall of the great empires but also the decline in civilizations as we once knew to flourish. Columbus, Ferdinand, and Isabella were set out to rule and take control of the world. I can only think of negative because it is what I was not only taught but it is what sticks out about his conquest to the west. Slavery, disease, genocide, greed, religious persecution and gentrification are all major problems that came out of Columbus expedition to the west.
In the film, 1492: The Conquest of Paradise, Christopher Columbus embarked on a journey to cross the sea in search of honor, gold, and the greater glory of god. At the University of Salamanca, Columbus had lost the respect of the commissioners, who disproved all of his works. While Columbus was searching for maps, he encountered a seaman named Martín Alonso Pinzón. Pinzón claimed that he had a friend named Santangel, who was a banker who the Queen owed money to. From this connection, Columbus later met with Queen Isabella I, who gave him his ships and supplies for his voyage. She also claimed that if Columbus discovered gold in the West, he would be renamed "Don Christopher Columbus," and would have permission to govern the distant lands.
Christopher Columbus is known today as the Spanish explorer that founded the “New World”, the Americas. If we dig deeper into the past we see that he was much more than just an explore that stumbled upon the Caribbean though. He happened to be the critical dividing point of the decades that would divide the world into what was known as the Old (pre-Columbus) and New World (post-Columbus). These two periods of the world were made up of much more than just his discovery, each period has multiple topics that are comparable or different than the other. Looking at the topics of political systems, trade, environment, disease, and slavery and the events and locations that make up these categories we can do just this and how even in the new world how
