While visiting the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe I discovered how religion is capable of bring a community together to worship one religion. The cathedral shrine of the virgin of Guadalupe is a catholic church and is the second largest Catholic Church membership in the United States. As a result, I found it to be the perfect location to visit for this reflection paper because of my family has been practicing the Catholic religion for many years. Additionally, this experience also allowed me to go back to my religious root because I had little exposure to religion while growing up and have not considered myself religious because of this reason. Visiting the cathedral was an eye-opening religious experience, from the exterior to …show more content…
In my opinion this serves as a metaphor as how old religion is and how it has been able to withstand time. The Cathedral shrine of the virgin of Guadalupe was built in 1872 and has held strong all these years, similar to the Catholic religion and its teachings. The Catholic religion is said to have begun in the first century AD and has since remained a strongly practiced religion, having around a 33 percent worldwide following. The religion of Catholicism began through the teaching of Jesus Christ and he later appoint Pope peter to be spread the Catholic word to others. The Pope services as the worldwide leader of the Catholic Church and a new pope is elected if the previous pope dies or resigns his position. The position of the Pope is highly revered and has been passed down through many centuries and there have been a total of 266 popes, with Pope Francis being the current pope. The sociological form of religious expression is demonstrated here by showing the social organization of the Catholic religion and by showing the leadership role of the Catholic community. Additionally, the relationship between Catholicism and the rest of society is beneficial because the Catholic Church teaches morals and helps citizens find their human dignity, which in turn helps promote ethical and lawful characteristics among …show more content…
Many Religions are usually dominated with one ethnicity of people that worship and follow it, but this is not the case with Catholicism and this became apparent when attending the sermon. Additionally, the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe also provides Spanish spoken sermons for people who want to hear the sermon in their native tongue or are unable to speak English, which further encourages the inclusion of multiple ethnicities. As the pastor spoke I became intrigued by what he spoke of because it was applicable to life. I always was deterred to go to church because I believed it was people reciting old stories that had no connection to modern life, but I became surprise to know that the bible offers lessons that withstand time. The sermon also demonstrated the theoretical expression is based on a doctrine and not from a myth or narrative story because the sermon demonstrated the all the Catholic beliefs and values branch from the bible’s teachings. I also observed the final religious expression during the sermon. Practical expression was demonstrated thorough out the sermon by the actions and things that occurred during the sermon. As the sermon came to an end, the choir began to sing and the organ played one last song to emit emotions throughout the cathedral and to form
One can hear a sermon any day of the week, because there are many preachers out there in the world. Many sermons are retold Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments that tell how our ancestors lived, and teach us life applications of how to glorify God while we are living our lives. For over a thousand years God’s word has been preached by many faithful men who follow Him. However, there were some of those faithful men who used God’s Word and their own improvisation to convict sinners and to put their trust in God. Those times resulted in an era called the Great Awakening of the 18th century and they also put an end to the segregation era of the 20th century. Two of the faithful men during those eras were
The Pope is the head of the Church: he represents the ultimate religious authority. However, as a Bishop of Rome, the Pope is also in command of certain secular affairs, including some military aspects. Certainly, the Pope is a link between the earthly and the divine realms. Problems arise when the imperfect world the Pope physically lives in interferes with his heavenly objectives. Taking Pope Gregory I as an example, I am going to look at his letters to analyze how he reconciled his political and spiritual goals, whether he valued one category over the other, and how he justified it.
The Virgin ordered Diego to collect Castilian roses around the hill and she helped him arrange them into his cloak. On December 12 when Diego returned to the Archbishop, he opened his tilmátli or cloak in which the image of the Virgin appeared. In response, the archbishop honored the Virgin’s request and built an altar in her honor. Today, The Basilica de Guadalupe in Tepeyac stands in dedication to the Virgin’s first appearance and remains the most visited Catholic shrine.
Just like what I had known my whole life, it was a church that was mostly Latino. At first sight, it appeared homogenous, but with almost ten years there, I realized I was utterly wrong. There were men and women from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and Columbia, each with their own lingos, cultural beliefs, and attitudes. For some of the men and women there, just a single border separated them, yet it seemed like they were oceans apart as people. Save for the occasional squabble, they stupefied me with their openness and cooperation toward each other, and even more with the wisdom they shared with me. At that point, I had only known how a Salvadorian lived, but through my time at church, it was as if I was getting a perfect panorama shot of the diversity I never
According to Our Lady of Guadalupe of the South and the North, “She beckoned to him, and speaking his native language, she revealed that she was the Blessed Mother, and that she wished for a church to be erected on the hill. (36) She then ordered Juan Diego to talk to the Bishop, Juan of Zumarraga, about what he saw today. After talking with Juan Diego, the bishop grew suspicious of him. In the next two apparitions, Juan Diego was asking Mary to help him get the trust of the bishop, only to return getting trust taken away from him. Here is what My Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe stated about the following
Today, Latinos are immigrants, this factor plays a large part in how they choose to express beliefs’; otherwise uncompromising Pentecostal churches are known to expand on their religious doctrine to focus more on themes such as struggle, displacement and migration2. Many prayers, testimonies and bible readings focus on this theme; stories such as the Exodus from Egypt receive significantly more attention than would be the norm. The Trinity Cathedral is an excellent example of this, the majority of the congregation were immigrants or children of immigrants who spoke little English; the sermon—according to the deacon—included messages about being away from home, finding faith in a unfamiliar place and traveling. St Clare’s was a bit more general in its message, while many in its congregation were immigrants the sermon’s message didn’t linger on any ‘migrant themes’ over any other theme. The use of iconography was also very important, both churches featured statues of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Our Lady of Charity—the patron saints of Mexico and Cuba respectively—which were visited by various churchgoers and their children3. The children’s interaction with the statues was particularly noteworthy, most did not mimic their parents’ exact practices, some children would touch a statue when their parents would have bowed to it, and others would merely contemplate the statues when their parents said
In recent days I had the opportunity to go back to North Carolina for a few short days. There, with a heavy heart from a loss in the family, I had nothing else to look towards. I’ve always heard of individuals finding peace, faith, blessings, and love of Christ from attending church. I’ve never been a person who put their faith into a higher power. As I was growing up my parents never wanted to force me into any religion without me knowing everything about it and choosing which route to take on my own. As the years treaded on, I never bothered myself to learn about the many different religions and what each stands for. So I used this opportunity as mine to attend church for the very first time. I attended the Roman Catholic services held
Mexican American Catholics combined socializing with religion to form traditions uniquely to them. Jamaicas, for example, were church bazaars and parish fundraisers that surrounded “parishioners in cooperative work and cultural celebration, creating a sacred-secular space in which they…affirmed a sense of dignity and community” (Goff & Harvey, 2004, p. 186). Similar ethnic and religious celebrations include posadas and pastorelas (community Christmas processions and nativity plays), quinceañeras (rite of passage for fifteen-year-old girls), and baptism parties among many others (Goff & Harvey, 2004, p. 186). The Mexican American Catholics’ sacred space was out in the communities where social and religious traditions
Roles of the Catholic Church in Western civilization has been scrambled with the times past and development of Western society. Regardless of the fact that the West is no longer entirely Catholic, the Catholic tradition is still strong in Western countries. The church has been a very important foundation of public facilities like schooling, Western art, culture and philosophy; and influential player in religion. In many ways it has wanted to have an impact on Western approaches to pros and cons in numerous areas. It has over many periods of time, spread the teachings of Jesus within the Western World and remains a foundation of continuousness connecting recent Western culture to old Western culture.-
As time constantly presses forward and the earth continues to revolve, the world will never stop progressing and adapting to better suit the needs of mankind. The evolution of religion has greatly enhanced the quality of life for humanity by providing individuals with a strong belief system that is now the foundation of many peoples’ core values. One universal religion that has undergone extensive amounts of reform is Christianity. In particular, the Catholic church is well-known for the development of their famous ecumenical council meetings that help determine the future of the church. Numerous Councils have been conducted throughout the course of history, but none more significant than the most recent, the Second Vatican Council or Vatican II. The Catholic church was operating as if it was still the medieval period and desperately needed to be modernized. As a result, every Roman Catholic Church official was gathered to meet and devise a plan for how to introduce the church to the modern world. Consequently, the following will reveal the Second Vatican Council and the ramifications of the agenda, history and theology evolution, significant texts, and new developments.
If people were able to find God in all things, they would proclaim his goodness and glory in everything. While cura personalis and AMDG are important aspects of the Catholic worldview, one cannot have a full understanding of it without recognizing the seven principles of Catholic social teaching. Applying the teachings of Catholic social teaching to social issues can illuminate the proper response to many issues in our
The objective of this report is to contrast and compare the culture of the Calvary Church with Catholicism, which is the religion that I practice. A field trip was taken to the Calvary Chapel in Rancho Cucamonga On February 12 of 2013, in which a clear observation of its services was
The Papacy is the office of the Pope. The word pope comes from the Latin form of the word “Papa” which means father. The office of the Pope or rather the papacy is responsible for a wide variety of things. Specifically the Papacy’s main responsibility is the spiritual well being of the members of the Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church rose to power in the 6th century and lasted throughout the 9th century. There were several different circumstantial and also coincidental factors that contributed to the high regard of the church by the 6th century. The beginning was the church’s unsolicited popularity. This could be linked to its relationship with the early apostles. The Roman Church was the first in the empire
Through this experience my deeply ingrained desire to participate in multi-lingual worship that was first manifested in the Ethnomusicology concert was reinforced. The heart for the gospel showed through the Hispanic service was awe-inspiring and for the first time really exposed me to what the global church looks like. Never before had I experienced such a diverse display of public worship outside of my own culture. Though it might seem obvious to some, I had never before considered the sign language of other languages in the
Towards the end of the Middle Ages and into the duration of the Renaissance, the Medieval Church’s social and political power dwindled. Centuries prior the Catholic Church gained a surplus of control, largely due to the stability it maintained during the chaotic breakdown of the Western Roman Empire . Yet toward the end of the Middle Ages the Church set in motion factors that would ultimately lead to its downfall as the definitive figure of authority. However, despite political and social controversy surrounding the church, the institutions it established cleared a path for a new way of thinking, shaping society in an enduring way.
