INTERTEXTUAL CONNECTION: The weather was quite hot, as Stradlater and Holden went down to the can. While Holden sat down beside Stradlater, turning the cold water on and off, Stradlater whistled while he shaved. The above quote demonstrates how you cannot say that you know a person fully until you have known them for a long time. The idea of first impression is similar to the outward appearance of Stradlater. Many people judge a person by their first impression. However, first impressions are only looking at the outer shell of an individual. This cannot tell others much about an individual. This stops people from getting to know one another. The quote reminded me of the book Little White Lies by Katie Dale. The female lead character within the book has brought huge plot twist as she was living with a name not of her own. She pretends to have no clue of the guy whom she shows attraction to. Later in the novel, it is shown that she has been lying about her identity itself. The guy she continuously tries to keep a close relationship with was the guy she suspected to be the murderer of her sister. Everything about her was a complete lie. Her own friends were victims of her act as well. This may be quite extreme compared to that of the quote. Nevertheless, it is a great example of how one cannot know an individual truly. When looking back at the quote above, Holden states how no one knows the Stradlater in which he has perceived. Stradlater is thought to be a handsome guy on the outside, yet in his private space, he is immensely dirty. As Holden says, “he was a secret slob”. These
