Atmosphere (Mood of the Story)-- The mood of Catcher in the Rye is depressing and sad, as it is told from the perspective of Holden Caulfield, who narrates the plot with a cynical and monotone voice. Beginning-- The first event that begins the plot is the scene where Holden visits his history teacher, Mr. Spencer. Conflict-- An external conflict includes when Holden is kicked out of Pency Prep, though this is minor. The main, internal conflict is how Holden struggles with how “phony” and fake the adult world is, and dealing with and accepting the eventual loss of innocence in kids. Decisions-- The main decision Holden makes to drive the plot forward is to move out of Pencey Prep prematurely, spending his time in the city and motels instead …show more content…

One of his brothers is a writer and actor that goes by the name D.B. His other brother is named Allie, deceased of three years. His sister is named Phoebe, and she is ten years old. His father works as a lawyer. Foreshadowing-- At the beginning, Holden foreshadowed that he has been hospitalized for a nervous breakdown when he said, “before I got pretty run down and had to come out here and take it easy.” Genre-- The Catcher in the Rye falls into the genres of literary realism and coming-of-age fiction. Hyperboles-- Some examples of hyperboles within the story incorporate, “I was half in love with her by the time we sat down (73),” and, “Grand. Now that’s a word I really hate. I could puke every time I hear it (9).” Irony-- Throughout the book, Holden is upset about the phoniness around him, yet constantly lies. He’s said himself that he’s a terrible liar. Also, from what the reader has seen from Holden, it isn’t out of the ordinary for him to spin elaborate lies out of thin air for no reason.
