Why do we need to post signs prohibiting weapons on our chapter facilities?
Kappa has a long-standing policy of prohibiting the use and/or possession weapons on chapter property. The requirement for signage includes a flexibility in selecting the signage that would work for your particular chapter facility as well as options that are discrete. Such signs should not have an impact on Recruitment other than conveying the Fraternity’s expectations to potential new members from the very start.
My chapter facility is university owned/a dorm floor/suite.
If your chapter is unhoused but has a designated meeting space or if the facility university owned, please work with the university to ensure appropriate signage is posted on the exterior of that building. We understand, however, that the university may not approve such signage being posted.
What should be done if a weapon is brought into the chapter facility?
Kappa has developed guidelines for House Boards to deal with weapons violations, which can be found after logging into www.kappa.org/members, and navigating to More Resources > House Board President > Procedure for Weapon Violations. To many high school students, college seems like a far away land, a mysterious place where everyone wants to be yet not many know how to get there. As children, our parents tell us how much time we have to think about college, and that it is too far down the line to think about. The truth is it is never too early to think about your future. I, like many people, put little thought into my future career and now am lost in an unfortunate mix of indecision and anxiety. Not knowing where you want to be in the future is a hard burden to bear. Many of us tend to find out that we only know what we do not want, not what we actually do want. Do we want to be poor? Absolutely not. Do we want a boring job? Of course we don’t. We all want our

The ability to carry concealed weapons onto college campuses has always been an area of contention. In 1990, Congress passed the Clery Act which created gun-free zones in primary and secondary schools. Around that same time many states passed laws prohibiting weapons on college campuses as well. (Lyons, 2017) In recent years there has been a stronger focus on college related shootings and deaths which has re-ignited the conversation regards concealed weapons on college campuses.
Students, especially in a college environment, should not be in possession of a firearm. College students go to parties and tend to get intoxicated. When under the influence, a student’s judgment becomes impaired, now add a gun into an already potentially dangerous environment and the consequences could be fatal. Even if students do exercise caution when handling their firearms, accidents can occur. According to Gun Violence Archive, there were 1,959 accidental shootings in 2015 and already 533 accidental shootings in 2016. Not only are guns dangerous at the hands of a shooter, but they are dangerous in the hands of anyone. Most students are not trained on how to operated a firearm, tend to make poor decisions and accidents do happen. In my opinion, students should not be allowed to have guns on campus, for the sake of everyone’s
I am a Spanish major with a track in Secondary Education and a minor in International Studies, and I am an Honors College student. Hence, my course schedule is rather tight and does not have much flexibility. This study abroad program is of great assistance, as I will be able to get credits for my Spanish major and Honors College electives during the summer while exploring a new country. Through this experience, I will be able to enhance my academic interests. I am hoping to immensely improve my Spanish language skills and see education from an international perspective. Also, the Honors College emphasizes the importance of experiential learning through study abroad. In addition, my professional career goals include teaching Spanish and going

College is a time of rapid change in a young person’s life, it can be many things but most importantly it is a time where students start to truly grow into their academic abilities. All students deserve an equal chance to grow in a safe learning environment, but this is not always possible as our culture has become more violent in recent years. Campus carry laws will allow law abiding citizens to protect themselves in a sacred institution, which has seen significant rises in violence in recent years. Not every tragedy is preventable, but allowing a person who has a permit to carry their weapon at school can prevent future massacres.
In recent years gun control on college campuses has become a rising issue. Certain states have made it legal to carry a firearm on any college campus. Other states are giving the power to colleges to decide if weapons will be allowed on their property. An example of this is lawmakers in Columbus Ohio have made it legal to carry a gun on campus. This is because of an attack at Ohio State University where a driver ran his car into a group of people and then began to attack them with a knife. He injured eleven different people before campus police arrived and killed him (Arm Cops).
Although eight states have passed provisions allowing concealed weapons on public campuses and several other states allow campuses to decide if they are allowed, instead of law focused approaches colleges should take a holistic view and move towards providing robust security programs, safety training, communication networks and guidance on behavior awareness for faculty and students. As States continue to pass campus carry laws the colleges continue to funnel the majority of their focus dedicated to passing the law. This has eroded and overshadowed the end result, which is to protect students and faculty. Campuses should not allow students to carry guns on campus. By providing this false sense of security it dilutes the opportunity to implement
The laws on concealed carry hand-guns have become stricter over the past couple of years. When it comes to concealed weapons on college campus, everybody there will have a different opinion. The students, faculties, and staff’s opinions will differ because of how they were raised, or even where they grew up. Some people want to have a concealed hand gun on a college campus because it is their right and for protection, but putting other lives in danger is a greater risk.
The House Director hears about a prohibited item: She notifies House Board. In an emergency situation, House Board may then grant her permission in writing to conduct the inspection. •
College is seen as the beginning of young adult life, but campus crime can prevent the continuation of that life.Yet, campuses still prohibit students from carrying essential self defense weapons. This is most likely due to their ignorance of the benefits involved with allowing campus carry. Campus carry improves the overall environment of a college and promotes safety. Students should be allowed to carry guns on campus due to the current lack of protection offered through the university and an individual’s lawful rights, despite the belief that it would cause an escalation in violent crime.
