Throughout history many gun owners carried a concealed weapon. In recent years concealed weapons have made a transition from being used as protection to being used for harming others. Because of the rise in shootings colleges and schools are having to take action in finding a way to prevent shootings. The government is also trying to bring public shootings to a halt by tightening gun laws. The effects of being able to carry a concealed weapon has made a large impact in schools and public places.
In recent years gun control on college campuses has become a rising issue. Certain states have made it legal to carry a firearm on any college campus. Other states are giving the power to colleges to decide if weapons will be allowed on their property. An example of this is lawmakers in Columbus Ohio have made it legal to carry a gun on campus. This is because of an attack at Ohio State University where a driver ran his car into a group of people and then began to attack them with a knife. He injured eleven different people before campus police arrived and killed him (Arm Cops).

It is not a good idea because every time a gun is actually needed, the students are probably not sober enough to fire it. Most violence occurs on a college campus when there is alcohol involved. Alcohol is not allowed on college campuses, but the rule is not enforced very well. There are usually drunk people and underage kids that could be intoxicated. A student trying to defend himself or others could be drunk. By being under the influence the student has an even greater chance of hitting the wrong target and possibly ending the life of an innocent bystander. With alcohol involved violence could erupt without the need of a gun. A simple argument between two people could end in bloodshed because one of them is carrying a gun
That why the teachers should have guns some people may think that if teachers had guns than the teachers could stop the persons that came into the school looking to hurt people.Yet what people do not understand is that the odds of no one becoming hurt during the chaos of a teacher fighting off the shooter is that someone could get hurt if not careful. Not saying that it may not work the way people may hope it will, just pointing out that the odds of something going wrong is truly high. And there are a number of reasons why this could go bad real fast. Yes some could say this so call reasons can be fix in a flash. Sure the reason can be overlooked and may be easy to fix , but they can still happen.
Every day parents send their children off to school with the expectation that they will be returned home safely at the end of the day. However, with an ever increasing number of school shootings some parents are pulling their children out of school because they feel as if school can no longer offer the same sense of security as they once had. Some schools are pressing for the right for school instructors to carry a loaded weapon on campus. School instructors should be allowed to carry a loaded weapon on campus because it helps prevent school shootings, it protects them during school shootings, and gives students and staff an added sense of security.
Guns and schools just don’t mix. Of course, this could be arguable from both sides. Only nine out of our fifty states allow guns on campus. Most private universities have the choice to decide if they want to allow concealed weapons on campuses. As for public institutions with the law in its state, they have no choice. Public institutions only have control of what buildings are limited. There are numerous reasons that it could be beneficial, but it can also be a complete catastrophe just waiting to happen. In today’s society, people feel the need to be more protected because of what’s going on in the world. There have been many reported incidents in regards to guns being abused on school grounds. Guns end lives, so it’s imperative that we understand the rules and why they’re so important. In order for people to really understand the pros and cons of having guns on campus, they first must began to understand its safety hazards, retaliation and prevention mechanism.
Concealed handguns would NOT detract from a healthy learning environment: counter acts point one when the SGFS stated that students would feel uncomfortable for not knowing which of their professors concealed a weapon. SCCC argues that unless every campuses entrance have an X-ray or metal detectors, students would clueless who is concealed and who is not. Point two, only 1% of the population is permitted to conceal a weapon which is 1 person out of 100 people. So the point that students would be afraid and miss out of the opportunity to study when they were not able to carry out a full discussion or heated debate is invalid. Point three, where SGFS stated that in 1999 studied, more American citizens are anti-gun law on college campuses. SCCC argues that these data are old and took place when gun law are mostly enforced in the battlefield at the time of survey. Therefore, it is not valid for today society on gun control issue. In addition, the survey are
The idea of Concealed Carry arms at universities is a controversial topic for both students and faculty on whether guns should be allowed or banned on campuses throughout the United States. The idea of Concealed Carry Arms is a controversial topic because it represents both protection and fear as no one knows who has a weapon, whether they have it legally or even if they know how to use it properly and safely. Also, nobody knows of someone else’s intentions with Concealed Carry Arms as they could use that gun for protection or murder. The idea of allowing Concealed Carry Arms on campus is a controversial topic that could affect universities and campuses in the United States.
It seems that tragedy and violence across America are becoming all too common in our daily news. Even more tragic is when it is at a school. With the increase in violence across America, it is opening the door to the question of should college campuses allow concealed guns on campus? Allowing concealed guns on campuses is something that may come true at public colleges across Georgia. Recently, the Georgia senate passed a bill by 37-17 that would allow gun owners 21 and over to carry concealed weapons on public college campuses. If Governor Nathan Deal approves the bill it will go into effect (The Associated Press). While some feel this could potentially open the door to more violence, others believe this will give them the ability to protect themselves should the need arise.
The decision for college and university campuses to allow their students to carry concealed weapons on campus is a risky debate that one should disagree with. A numerous amount of unfortunate events that have a chance of happening would result as a train thought if the decision was made. Various public schools below college level have been publicized throughout the years to have been involved with shootings, threats, or suicide with arms that were sneaked onto campus discretely, or exposed through a rageful manner fired at random innocent individuals. College level, there is already a majority of students that are above the age of eighteen or twenty-one, both ages having the legal privilege to purchase a weapon. This would increase a caution
Even when there has been ongoing campus shootings around the nation. It raises the question will this help decrease violence or only increase it? The idea of allowing guns on colleges campuses will only make students live in fear whenever they are heading to class or even when they arrive to class. Here are a few statements from administrators stating their viewpoints on the issue of guns on college campuses. A proposal was brought to attention after the shooting at Umpqua Community College October 1, 2015. This proposal stated that college students can have a concealed firearm on campus to make students feel safer when walking to classes (Grzywa, 2). This proposal raised a lot of concerns from schools across the UW System and administrators are hoping that the legislation doesn’t pass. Stout’s SSA President Eric Huse quotes, “I agree with our legislators that student safety is of utmost importance. However, the notion that permitting guns in university buildings will create a safer environment is backward thinking” (Grzywa, 2). Another similar opinion was stated from a man by the name of Sportiello, he said that we need to formulate the best way to create a safe society through careful examination and research instead of making the decision to allow firearms to take over classrooms, workout facilities, and residence
“If you’ve got a person thats raped because you didn't let them carry a firearm to defend themselves, I think you’re responsible,” State Representative Dennis K. Baxley of Florida said during a debate in a house subcommittee. When a person goes out for the night and are heading back home after the party, game, etc there is a chance someone is capable of doing something to them therefore having a licensed gun will protect them. A student should be able to defend his or hers self at all cost. Having a CCW can be the reason a person can save themselves or someone else’s life. The shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007 was one of the deadliest shootings in US history, when a gunmen went on a shooting spree leaving more than 30 students and faculty members dead. If the campus carry law was passed before this disaster took place there would not have been as many casualties and many of these killings would have been prevented. However, now lawmakers in 10 states are pushing the campus carry law, assuring that violence in school is reduced in a dramatic number. According, to CNN.com many people disagree with the campus carry law due to the fact that most school shootings are by students when they are out partying or acting juvenile. Many people say that a college campus is not a place for gun, but people do not take into consideration that all these incidents
In this case, I see so many states have been approved the gun-carry control by the state government. It easy to make every state understand about the rule which the state government was given them as a law. In 2017, I believe Texas is one of the most states around the world has directly relevant to the politics about the gun control in every college or anywhere. According to the Colorado State University, said: “Right now the laws are stacked in favor of armed killers, and that's what we want to prevent,” (Grasgreen) This statement shows that most of the people in college or outside of the college they can do whatever they want with a gun such as a killer or even the terrorist people. During a few years recently about gun control has banned
Then They Spoke to Lawmakers.” Talks about a possible ban on the sale of military-style firearms like the AR-15, the same gun used to kill 17 students at Stoneman Douglas High school. Now some may believe that take taking guns away is unfair and it will only make the problem worse. But only taking some guns away will still benefit the doubt of when someone thinks to go shoot up a school next. And yes, next time, because unless we do something soon, it might be our school next and who knows, maybe 18,19, or even 100 students get killed, but what if we could stop it or prevent it from happening again, the government must allow teacher and staff to have access to guns at school to protect themselves and their
The reality today is how increasingly popular it is for news media to sensationalize campus shootings providing a quick vehicle for lines to get blurred between a true mass shooting incident vs. a campus argument where someone has brought a gun and used it during an altercation with an individual or group. The latter is actually a more common occurrence than a mass shooting unfortunately both usually end with casualties and victims of violence. Imagine either scenario with a classroom full of students who may or may not be carrying a gun. Most students in the class will be under the age of twenty-five, their experience to firing a gun is usually during hunting season with a rifle not a handgun. Now they have been placed in a high risk situation with zero experience on how to handle a mass shooter or disgruntled boyfriend or student upset about their final grades. Several gun owners today have obtained their concealed handgun license. Andy Pelosi states, "Most people with concealed guns don't have tactical training, as law enforcement receives" (para. 15). This training consists of providing knowledge of the owner’s handgun and accuracy of target shooting in a very non-threatening environment. This in no way prepares anyone for a true high risk situation. Then throw in the mix multiple people with firearms in a confined space trying to determine in a split second
It is understandable that most individuals believe that guns on campuses brings relief and safety, as
We do not know whether a teacher is capable of handling a gun. This will only bring more fear to students if a conflict were to arise. This is not the solution we are seeking for. More guns will only create more violence. Governors and Senators around the U.S. are proposing to raise the minimum age to buy any firearm to 21. This is a sensible move to help prevent gun violence around the U.S. as a poll released by CNN, shows that 71% of Americans sided with barring those under 21 from buying firearms. It is only logical that a teen who is just coming out of high school cannot purchase a weapon. They are not responsible enough to hold such a deadly weapon as we have seen in the past with many shootings such as the Columbine shooting where the shooters were only 17 and 18 years
Due to the recent upheaval of violent crimes on campus, many pro-gun activist have suggested that both the students and teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus. Those for this may claim that their rights have been violated because many college campuses refuse to allow weapons of any kind on campus. It is not the right to carry a gun which is in debate here, but rather it is whether or not guns should be allowed on a college campus. The Constitution of The United States of America already grants citizens the right to carry guns, and being in the south, I am by far no stranger to seeing a gun from time-to-time, but it is not appropriate for guns to be in a vulnerable area such as a college campus. There are already too many guns available to the public, and allowing them on an educational facility would greatly increase the likelihood of injury or death. Americans, as previously mentioned, have the right to bear arms, and this should be held sacred, and not infringed, taken away, or limited. However, stricter firearm control should be implemented for those who chose to carry a concealed weapon, and gun control should be done by having stricter certification processes before a firearm or gun permit is issued, intensive psychological evaluation for the person or persons applying for a gun permit or a gun,and greater educational requirements for gun owners and firearm safety.
