“Dry” is a memoir written by Augusten Burroughs. Burroughs talks about his life and what led him to his addiction and how he lived his life as an addict. Burroughs lived with his mother who was ill until he was thirteen years old. His mother then placed him in the care of her psychiatrist. Living with his new family he basically had no rules; you could say he was a part of a dysfunctional family. Burroughs had a talent which was advertising. He took his talent and got a job in New York where he resides. As Burroughs got older he started to drink uncontrollably. In the book ‘Dry’, Augusten Burroughs gives us an insightful look into the life of someone who has been struggling with alcohol abuse. Augusten is just an average man in his twenties, he lives in Manhattan, New York, works in advertising, and has plenty of money. But there is one thing that makes him anything but. When an average man may be having one or two drinks, Augusten had eleven. His whole life revolved around alcohol. He would stay out going to bars all night, and never go home. At work you could smell the alcohol in his pores and his breath. With his job on the line, Augusten was asked to go to rehab.

Jim, a high school all-star basketball player becomes addicted to heroin. He tries to hide his addiction, but it becomes quite prevalent when it begins to overtake his life entirely. To begin with, Jim reflects on his first experiences with heroin and refers to it as a “chippy” habit. He isn’t aware of the addictiveness of this potent drug, which shortly becomes habitual. His addiction leads to him being kicked off the basketball team, out of his own house, and then desperate on the streets of New York City alongside of his friends. This substantially progresses his addiction, resulting in him passing out in the snow one night. Thanks to Jim’s former basketball friend, Jim is forced to withstand from heroin. Jim become extremely agitated from withdrawal and escapes to look for some more. Jim later finds himself in a six-month rehab, which he notes “the

Achieving sobriety is the ultimate goal for all patients recovering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol. However, the road to long-term sobriety can be long and challenging. That’s why it’s important to understand the benefits of getting sober. When roadblocks appear on the road to recovery, it can be helpful to remember what you’re gaining by giving up alcohol and/or drugs.

Throughout the story many bad decisions were being made because they couldn't handle themselves whether they were drunk or sober and it caused a lot of trouble and problems for these young men. We sometimes forget to make the right decision and sometimes is hard to make the right decision when you are hanging out with the wrong people and wrong set of minds of wanting to be "bad" or "revel" because other people are doing so.

On a wet, dark, and snowy Sunday night an outsider wouldn't expect a Northeastern University campus bar to be crowded. In fact, most students can't even leave their dorms because there is too much snow. Yet a tiny pub, located barely off campus on Gainesboro Street, is packed wall to wall with students. A small community is drinking away their problems while discussing the probability of school being canceled. Many experts would describe this act as binge drinking, but any student would prefer to describe it as just a regular Sunday night.

Recovering from addiction presents you with challenges to say the least. You have to give up your drug of choice, which can be scary, literally painful, and sometimes, even sad. It’s the sadness, or rather the emotional side of addiction that I want to address here.

He was becoming an outcast from society, alcohol was ruining his life.      As the story progressed he noticed the seasons changing and it bothered him. He was getting cold and lonely, the way an alcoholic gets when they start to realize they are losing everything they have, especially their friends and social status.
