Books are the oldest medium among all the print media and they are still one of the most widely used among all. These were the books that contributed to the development of libraries in medieval times across Asia and Europe. Magazines and newspapers are relatively new form of print media which gained popularity and became common in the 20th century all over the world, thus becoming leading medium of mass communication. Reading expands your vocabulary and knowledge. When I was reading my book, the Crossover, there were new words and their definition throughout the book. I learned so many new words like, patellar tendinitis which is also known as jumpers’ knee, an injury to the tendon connecting your kneecap (patella) to your shinbone. Joseph Addison said “reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body,” I think that quote is very true; we need to read in order to keep our minds going. If we don’t read during the summer, our vocabulary could shrink, and it is more likely kids will struggle at the beginning of the school
Before newspapers, handwritten news sheets were used (Stephens, n.d.). After the creation of the printing press, the news sheets were then printed on papers which was later called newspapers (Stephens, n.d.). The accuracy and efficiency of the printing press enabled more publishers to use the printing press (Arthur, 2004). Newspapers could then be more widely produced. The ability of mass production of the printing press gave ease in spreading information rapidly to different places (Jeffrey, 2001). This led to a wider use of newspapers. This ability also allowed the newspaper to not easily be corrupted or destroyed since there were so many copies available (Jeffery, 2001). The creation of newspapers allowed the public to gain more knowledge about what was happening in other parts of the world. It also allowed citizens to voice their disagreements with the government. The newspaper was a form of communication that let the voice of citizens be heard (Quinn, 2017). Without the printing press, newspaper would not have emerged and could not have been as widely produced as it was. The creation of newspapers was only possible because of the printing press (Quinn,
With the invention of the printing press, during the middle ages, media has become the driving force of our society. Although, many people were not able to read Latin during the time, the printing press soon paved the way to translated version of texts into common language. This was a huge factor in the enlightenment period, where people moved away from the church and began to use science in their lives. Today the media has grown to such an extent that it controls almost every aspect our lives.
There are several reasons why I believe reading is important. First, it is an enjoyable pastime. While reading, characters and storylines get absorbed into your brain. This leads to creating bonds and connections to fictional people, forming other worlds we can use to escape our sometimes bitter reality.
We all know reading is boring, time consuming, and compulsory. All though, most kids would agree with that statement, some may disagree. Some can say that if one does not read they can lose knowledge and become less smart. If you don't read there can be consequences for stopping. Reading is valuable because it gives readers the power to escape, to maximize their potential, and to strengthen their mind.
The ability to read allows for education, enjoyment, imagination, and understanding. With literacy you can go anywhere: the correct path on the highway, a made up kingdom, or the center of an atom. Reading is not in jeopardy, but rather will remain an essential part of our lives for the next several decades, if not centuries. Reading has proved to be a durable form of entertainment for centuries, however there will likely be some adjustments to how we approach the activity in the near future.
Many of us go through our everyday lives not realizing the many things that have built us to become who we are today. We were blessed enough to grow up in a well-educated society, where we are constantly growing and bettering ourselves. We have taken this education or more so our “foundation” and utilized it to help build ourselves. She made an analogy saying “reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”, and she proves this theory in her writing. When reading a book, all of your attention and focus are in on that book and you tend to forget all about your worries and personal problems, so reading is initially reducing stress levels and brings about inner peace and tranquility. Reading can additionally help you in your future life. Studies have proved that staying mentally stimulated can delay or even prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
“To know how to read is to light a lamp in the mind, to release the soul from prison, to open a gate to the universe" Pearl S. Buck once said in her book Pavilion of Women. Many different people read for many different reasons. Some people read to distract themselves from what they are currently dealing with, others as a pastime and a few read to open their minds. Reading books and other forms of literature can not only expand one's vocabulary, but, open one's mind to different concepts or ideas.
Ask any teacher or professor and they most likely all say reading is one of the most important parts to expanding knowledge. Books have been around as long as humans have known how to write and there is an infinite number of things to read about. Books unlike music can be packed tight with information just waiting to be read by the child.
