“To know how to read is to light a lamp in the mind, to release the soul from prison, to open a gate to the universe" Pearl S. Buck once said in her book Pavilion of Women. Many different people read for many different reasons. Some people read to distract themselves from what they are currently dealing with, others as a pastime and a few read to open their minds. Reading books and other forms of literature can not only expand one's vocabulary, but, open one's mind to different concepts or ideas. As a class, we read Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. This is a great example of how reading can open one’s mind about things one would not normally think about. There is thousands, if not millions of books that challenge the mind in a large number of ways. An example of this is 13 Days of Midnight, the book that I chose to read for the independent study unit. I found many of the words that Leo Hunt used in his writing, were words that I had not heard or never understood. Hamlet, written in an extremely different format from 13 Days of Midnight, is an equally, if not more challenging, text to read. It is written in an English that is no longer used and also depends on the stage direction for understanding of what is happening. Reading texts like Hamlet can help anyone that reads it become more aware of what happens in a text that is deeper than just the meaning of the words. I enjoy reading books like this mainly due to the fact that I am challenged to determine what the word means and how to use it in proper context. Books that challenge one’s vocabulary have a great potential to make the vocabulary of the reader to become better and more
