Black bears are the smallest North American bears however; they are the largest land mammal in New Jersey. Black bears evolved in thick forest and live in mixed hardwood forests, dense swamps and forested wetlands. They naturally like to eat fresh leaves, berries, fruits, nuts, roots, insects, bird eggs and small mammals. Black bears are generally solitary animals, with the exception of a sow and her cubs. They tend to be crepuscular, meaning they are most active shortly before sunrise and again after sunset. Black bears are typically not aggressive and tend to be wary of humans. However, since the early 2000s black bear and human interactions have become more frequent. New Jersey has excellent bear habitat is found primarily within Sussex, Passaic, Warren and Morris counties which are in the northern part of New …show more content…
The New Jersey Fish and Game Council have come up with a management strategy to handle the bear problem but the most effective way those far appears to be hunting the bears. In the early 2000s bear hunting was illegal and many people were against legalizing it again. In order to compromise a bear hunting season was passed which was started in the beginning of December and held concurrently with the state's six-day firearm deer hunting season. “Bear hunting zones include large sections of Morris, Sussex, Warren, and northern Passaic counties, plus smaller areas of Hunterdon, Somerset and Bergen counties. There is a limit of one bear per licensed and registered hunter.” This method of black bear population management was and is still successful. In 2003 and 2005 the success was based on “1) the target harvests were obtained; 2) the seasons were conducted safely with no hunter accidents and without incident of trespassing or other complaints; and 3) biological data on bears, hunter success and hunter participation was
seeds with their scat. The two main bears species are American Black Bears and Grizzly Bears.
This is approximately the same range of the Great Bear rainforest, which is a part of the larger North Pacific temperate rainforest (Appendix 1 Map 2). It falls within the biogeoclimatic zone of the coastal western hemlock which consists of cool and wet climate due to its proximity to both ocean and the mountain range (Klinka & Reimchen, 2009). This zone is home to a variety of distinct species such as coastal wolves and pacific salmon (Ferguson, 2006) and makes up approximately a quarter of the world’s temperate coastal forest. This region is so important due to the fact that it is basically one of the lungs for the world, storing massive quantities of carbon (Della Sala, 2013). This contributes to many factors such as regulating global climate and most importantly for the Kermode bear, supporting the world’s most productive salmon runs (Della Sala, 2013). The Spirit bear’s distribution is heavily reliant on this distribution and availability of the pacific salmon (Klinka & Reimchen, 2009). Evidence suggests that even though the Kermode bear is a subspecies of the american black bear and share the same niche, they still have different distribution of feeding areas (Sachs, 2010). The american black bear relies heavily on in-land shrubs including whitebark pine (Pinus
The Spirit Bear, or actually called the Kermode bear, lives in the Great Bear Rainforest in the Northwest area of the Canadian province British Columbia. Half way up the coast is where they live. “Scientifically, the white ones, along with their closest black relatives, belong to a subspecies of black bear.”(Smithsonian) The big white bear is probably around 300 lbs. It is cold where they live, and their fur definitely helps them keep warm. They hunt for things like salmon, and just eats it up. Right now, the some estimates say there are only around 100 of the specie left. They are very rare and definitely one of the rarest type of
In 1974 bear estimates were between 300 and 400 bears, in 2002 just eight years later with the help of Central Florida Farmers Association approximately 132,000 acres were set aside for bear habitation. Due to these and the efforts groups like TreeHuggerofAmerica, Defender.org and the FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission) the bear population started growing and growing and growing. From three to five hundred in 1974 to a little over three thousand in 2002. As of 2015 the current estimates are four thousand three hundred fifty bears and the amount of human / bear contact has
In September, the bears will eat up to twenty-thousand calories to build fat layers for winter. Which is ten times a normal human's daily intake. (animals) Bears spend most of the year pursuing a patchwork of habitats throughout the year, feeding on vegetation, insects, and other more reliable, though lower calorie food sources. These food sources include nuts, carcasses, plants, berries. Plants make up the majority of a bear’s incredible diet.
Nearly 100 black, white bears exist on this big and beautiful world. This type of bears are nearly extinct, Because people try to hunt the extinct animals. Black white bears have a rare double recessive gene in it’s body. This is how people have the white and black fur. When 2 parents have the same recessive gene the result is white fur for their young. A lot people think that these bears are Polar Bears or even Albino’s, but they are just Kermode Bears.
The grizzly bear was first found in Big Madly Creek on April 29, 1805. The grizzly bear is found in Southern and Northwestern states. You could also find them in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Sometime they wander into Washington and, Colorado. The grizzly bears usually can be found in the mountains and open areas near rivers and streams. The grizzly bears fur is brown and tan. The ends of the hair had white tips. The grizzly bear had claws and walks on all fours.
When you think of the word bear what comes to mind? Some people may possible think of Yogi the bear or Smoky the bear. However, society sets up a positive connotation for bears though in reality they are quite aggressive animals. Since this is a reality, New Jersey along with others states set up hunting seasons. The New Jersey bear hunt is in two different segments, A and B. Segment A is held within October fifth to the tenth and segment B is December fifth to the tenth. In 2015 there were 472 bears killed within segment A while, 38 were killed in segment B. The bear hunt in New Jersey is largely located in the northern counties. Bear hunting is a necessity in order to prevent the overpopulation of the species.
Most of the attacks occurred in the summer and fall months when the bears are eating the most in order to gain enough weight for the winter. Within each species, females with cubs were the most abundant in being the culprit for the attack, however, this number is difficult to verify due to the high number of unknown genders in the dataset. Black bear attacks occurred mostly in well-developed areas with high human densities while grizzly bear attacks occurred more in the backcountry where human populations are less
The good news is that, as a National Park brochure states, bears will usually move out of your way if they hear you. This does not mean you will never come across a bear on a trail, but hopefully by following the suggestions here you will be safe and the bears will be safe. Make Noise - Anytime you are outside away from your car you should make noise. The reason to do this is to simply let any bears in the area know that you are there
Sun bears have a unique diet. Their dies consist of berries, insects, leaves and lizards. Sun bears favorite snack is honey. Cubs have very few predators. Their predators are snakes and large birds. Since cubs can’t turn their necks as far they’re more vulnerable than adults.
According to the FWC, hunting supports keeping population size in check, fewer bears being pushed into neighborhoods and increasing wariness and fear of humans. Bears were removed from Florida’s threatened species list in 2012. About 300 bears are expected to be killed by an unlimited number of permitted hunters. Florida has an estimated 3,150 black bears in four regions — the eastern Panhandle, Northeast Florida, east-central Florida and South Florida — where the hunts would be conducted, according to the Panama City New Herald. The numbers are based on 2002 estimates for the eastern Panhandle and South Florida, and a 2014 count in the Northeast Florida and east-central Florida regions.
In addition to road building, the presence of agriculture lands near Grizzly bear habitat can increase the chances conflicts as well. Due to the proximity farms, bears see domestic livestock as attractants (Mace & Waller, 1998) and can attack
However, over 98 percent of grizzly bears have been eliminated to the number around 800 to 1,000 in the Lower 48 states. 01/06/2016 The Brewing Battle Over Grizzly Delisting and Trophy Hunting in the Yellowstone Ecosystem TheHuffingtonPost.com, Inc. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/wayne-pacelle/the-brewing-battle-over-g_b_8923316.html) As such, it was hard to argue that grizzlies are thriving. Since European colonization, they have lost half of their continental habitat, and even in BC around a third of populations have either die out or are currently endangered. (Anna Taylor) Overkill - trophy hunting slams BC's Grizzly bears 7th February 2014 Ecologist /Resurgence Trust (http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_analysis/2271852/overkill_trophy_hunting_slams_bcs_grizzly_bears.html) Another point is that they have startling low reproductive rate among the terrestrial mammals. It takes ten years for a female grizzly to replace herself in the population, and she will stop breeding in her mid-to late 20s. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Grizzly (sponsor)/Biology & Behavior (title) (http://westernwildlife.org/grizzly-bear-outreach-project/biology-behavior/) A female can give birth to a maximum of 10 cubs over her lifetime, and half of the cubs will die within a year.(Ibid) What is more, grizzly bears play an important role in forest ecosystem as seed dispersers and nutrient providers. Generally they benefit the surroundings by transporting berry seed to enable them to geminate, or pile up their fresh manure as fertilizer. While they searching for tree roots or ground squirrels, they increased the amount of nitrogen through soil disturbance. (Ibid) As a predator, grizzlies can control prey population. They hunt vegetarian so that regional density of plants would not decline in large quantities. Grizzly bears can be said as a keystone species in their
Bear is a true carnivore, but if not prevented the black bear could be a huge problem to humans.
