Black Bears
The black bear is the smallest North American bear. The adults are usually less than six feet long and stand about two to three feet tall at shoulders. The weight of a black bear varies between 125-500 ponds. They have small eyes and rounded ears. Also their snout is very long. Each paw has five very strong claws, which is used for tearing, digging, and climbing. One single hit from the front paw is enough to kill an adult deer. A black

If the officer traps the bear, the officer has to fill out a form to tell where it was captured, and what the problem was. Then the officer tags the bears ear and fills out information about the bear itself. When the officer releases the black bear, he has to tell the date, county, and exact location. After this is done, the officer will be able to if it is the same bear when another black bear is caught and has a tag. The very last resort in getting rid of a black bear is shooting it. If this is the case, a conservation officer will have to be the one to kill the black bear. If any damage is done the person should check and see if the damage is covered by the bear damage compensation. Not all damage is covered. Sometimes no damage at all is covered (Houchins 2). Most problems with black bears are caused by human error. If a person gets rid of their trash and edible products properly, they will most likely not have a problem with black bears (WV DNR).
The mating season for a black bear differs from most animals. Most animal’s breed when they are in peak physical condition, but black bears when their body weight is at the lowest for the year and the food is scarce. This is usually in the spring. The birth of a cub usually takes place in the sow’s winter den. If it is the bear’s first litter, there will often be only one cub, but if it is not she may have two or
In 1997, while bow hunting in the Ocala National Forest. I saw two large male bears eating grubs and one of them caught and begun to eat a Cotton Tail rabbit. They were approximately ½ mile from each other. It seemed like the very second that the bear with the rabbit tore it apart, I saw the other bear lift his nose to the air and was at a full run and was to the other bear within a minute. The first bear was bigger, but the second bear seemed to be hungrier and quickly took the remains of the rabbit away and out of sight. Thinking that it was a waste of time to remain in the area I returned to my jeep to head back to camp and get some lunch for myself. Upon reaching the logging road that lead to my jeep, I found large bear prints within my
The adult bears are about 5 to 6 feet tall and weigh 1500 to 1720 pounds. The spirits bears have white coats. The males can weigh up than 70% more the females. They have small round ears, sharp teeth, and short thick neck. They also walk on the soles of their feet. Did you know that their tail is 3 to 5 inches long.
Unfortunately, about twelve bears are killed annually while traveling to hibernation spots for the winter. After the bear comes out of hibernation, they will eat anything for food, because they are so extraordinarily hungry. (animals) The bear's hibernation spot depends on the weather, it can be under tree roots, in a cave, or even in a hollow tree based on how
Lifespan: Black bears can live up to 30 years in the wild but most only live around 10 years because of circumstances involving humans. Over 90% of young bear deaths are the results of gunshots, traps, vehicles and various other human interactions.
The Kermode bears is a rare black bear with white or creamy fur, brown eyes, dark nose pads, and nearly white claws. Most of the Spirit bears live on Princess Royal and Gribble along the rain forest coast of British Columbia and about 20% on the island are white bears but the rest is black. The white fur that is on a Kermode bear is the result of a double recessive gene equal to a subspecies. According to Tlingit tribes the ghost bear or the spirit bear is a reminder of times past. These black bears are called Kermode
Bear hunting is an extremely dangerous activity for one to partake in. There are many precautions one must take in order to successfully kill a bear. Although bears are typically calm creatures they can become extremely aggressive and dangerous if threatened. Therefore, one must be aware of their surroundings at all times and ready for any encounter. Normally bears are baited using some kind of container cut open with fruit and other strong smelling foods to draw the bears in. Though dangerous bear hunting does also provide a considerable amount of food for a family. Those you hunt typically do so in order to obtain the meat from the animal. A typical black bear weighs about 240 pounds on average. Though not all of that weight is eatable much of it
The Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus) is a subspecies of the American black bear (Ursus americanus). The Louisiana black bear was once found roaming all over Louisiana and parts of Arkansas, Texas, and Mississippi. However, during the 18th and 19th century, bear hunting became popular and large amounts of forest areas disappeared due to the demand for wood and agricultural land. By the 1950's, the Louisiana black bear's population was down to eighty to one hundred twenty. In efforts, to save the species the Director of Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries temporarily closed hunting season for the Louisiana black bear. Despite the noticeable decline of the bears' population, illegal harvesting and deforestation took place until the
Black bear attacks occurred the most, however, in the Vancouver area with 5 attacks in the past 16 years. The unit is not very large, but it is highly populated by human with not so many bears and so it is interesting to see such results from the data. The grizzlies had the most number of attacks in the 16 years in the Rocky and Central Purcells Unit of BC with a count of 4 each. Both areas are relatively less populated by humans with a good density of bears. This result shows that many of the black bear attacks occur more in human populated areas compared to grizzly bears which may be true because majority of the human population inhabit the southern regions of BC. Grizzlies, inhabit areas further up north while the black bears are found throughout BC, but most common in coastal and southern regions. Herrero and Higgins paper in 1999 also found similar findings where grizzly bears inflicted injuries in backcountry areas whereas black bears attacked in the more front-country closer to
Grizzly bears in their native habitat are wild animals. The bears (grizzlies, brown, and other varieties) found in Alaska are among the largest on earth. Grizzly-human interaction is best done minimally, if at all: the only reason that bears do not react as quickly as they might to humans (considering them prey) is that in their habitats, they have access to plenty of food and they do not
Black bears and Grizzly bears live in the Rocky Mountains, Alaska, and Canada. There are over 600,000 black bears in North America and thousands of Grizzly bears. The bears are out there. Anytime that you are spending time in bear country it is important that you know how to be safe and to keep your children safe.
Black Bears are not hibernators, but they do become a lot less active and go into a dormant state during the winter months. This is referred to Seasonal Lethargy. Black bears enter their dens in October and November. Before to that time, they can put on up to 30 pounds of body fat to get them through the seven months during which they fast. Winter dormancy in Black Bears typically lasts 3–5 months. They spend their time
But the main predators for adult Sun bears are large animals like tigers. Sun bears are unfortunately killed by deforestation.
Bears in Alaska Bears in Alaska are calm mammals that are mistaken for dangerous animals. Alaska has three different types of bears, which include the black bear, grizzly/brown bear, and polar bear. In Alaska there are "bears in Brooks Falls because there's a lot of fish." (Glanfield) There are bears in Alaska known as Kodiak bears that are found only in the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago and they have been isolated there since the last Ice Age.
Too many black bears can be dangerous for the residents of New Jersey. (Nuwer, 2011) They are migrating animals, and often enter into human neighborhoods in search of food often found in people's waste bins. This has led the NRA and other hunting groups to petition the state government on the issue of bear hunting for safety. Activist groups believe that taking better precautions to secure garbage around the state of New Jersey would keep the bears away from human areas, and that there are other ways to curb population growth besides hunting bears. These wildlife activists also point out that bears are usually passive, and unless threatened, are less
Grizzlies and black bears have been moved hundreds of miles away from their homes. Two were shot by hunters within two weeks of their relocation, and others have simply returned to their homes.(17) Wolves have been slaughtered in order to "let the moose population rebound and provide a higher harvest for local hunters."(18) In the early 1990s, a program designed to reduce the wolf population backfired when snares failed to kill victims quickly, and photos of suffering wolves were viewed by an outraged public.(19)
