Some people are requesting the US government to revoke Bill Cosby's Medal of Freedom, after more details have emerged in the rape allegations against the comedian. On Wednesday (July 15th), President Obama addressed those seeking the revocation of Cosby's medal. "There's no precedent for revoking a medal. We don't have that mechanism," the President answered. While most people may have expected President Obama to end his statement with that answer, he instead commented on what he defines as rape. "If you give a woman or a man, for that matter, without his or her knowledge, a drug and then have sex with that person without consent, that's rape. This country, and civilized country, should have no tolerance for rape," President Obama stated. Even though Cosby continues to deny the rape allegations, an old deposition has surfaced and it now appears the rape accusations made by countless women are true. During the deposition, Cosby admitted he had prescriptions for quaaludes (a sedative), and he testified under oath that he gave a woman the sedative. Cosby was then asked if he was going to use the quaaludes for women he wanted to …show more content…
Some of the victims include supermodel Janice Dickinson, supermodel Beverly Johnson, former Playboy Playmate Victoria Valentino, Carla Ferrigno (wife of The Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno, and Lilli Bernard. The majority of women have the same account of how Cosby assaulted them. Some of the women first met Cosby when they appeared on The Cosby Show. The victims claim the comedian offered to mentor them, and in several cases he would have the women meet him at his home. Once he was able to get the women alone with him, he offered them a cappuccino (the sedative was placed in the cappuccino without the women's consent), and most of the women woke up in bed without any memory of what
Fred Korematsu was born into a family of five in Oakland, California, 1919. He played tennis and participated on the swim team at his high school, Castlemont High School. He worked at his families flower shop most of his life. Fred Korematsu was recognized for the Presidential Medal of Freedom mostly because he played a huge part in the freedom of Japanese Americans. When the Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants were called into internment Fred Korematsu refused to go. He had always believed in equal rights, and he wasn't going to let our government make him stop believing in equal rights. He got plastic surgery and changed his name to make him seem more American, but despite his efforts he was arrested on May 30, 1942. On September 8,
“Rape is unique. No other violent crime is so fraught with controversy, so enmeshed in dispute and in the politics of gender and sexuality… And within the domain of rape, the most highly charged area of debate concerns the issue of false allegations. For centuries, it has been asserted and assumed that women “cry rape,” that a large proportion of rape allegations are maliciously concocted for purposes of revenge or other motives.”
I thought the Bill Cosby trial was very interesting. One simple reason why it caught my eye with all those females saying he did rape me 15 years ago and etc. It was sorta of like a train reaction if you understand what I mean. I guess I had never experience what those women went threw but i wonder why the speak up now , why not earlier?. It did surprise me to a point how there was no evidence to make a case. I understand it happened so long ago but I wonder if Bill Cosby had good connection with people in court house. I always think differently because I watch to much crime shows.
I concur with Wickham’s argument; Cosby’s refusal to answer this question is not helping his case. In an attempt to take the moral high ground by refusing to acknowledge these allegations as serious, he is convincing no one of his innocence. Cosby lost even more support after it was discovered in the deposition notes that he admitted getting quaaludes,. But I don’t think that he will admit it on his own. So much resources has gone into dismissing the allegations. But sexual assault is a serious issue. Just answer the question, Mr.
Brock Turner's wealth, image, and color of skin have gifted him years back on a jail sentence likely to exceed 5 if perpetrated by a man not born into the privilege he had been born into. He is just one example of an unjust society that allows men to rape, he is just one man in a world of judges, reporters, and fathers that lead to these tragedies.
Police told many of the victims there was no case and no use trying to open one up. Cosby`s representatives constantly taunt the victims and make them seem lower than they are whenever they talk about the issues about Cosby. “Seven women say Cosby’s lawyers or representative's hurt their reputations by saying their accusations were untrue.” (Brumfield). Putting these girls down is not the way to go.
Bill Cosby was convicted of three counts of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand, at the time a Temple University employee he had mentored, including penetration with lack of consent, penetration while unconscious, and penetration after administering an intoxicant, which are felonies.
In January of 1998, Monica Lewinsky filed a sworn affidavit denying sexual relations between the president and her. She also allegedly asked Linda Tripp to lie for her. Tripp wore a wire and recorded conversations between the two. Clinton then denied that the two had a relationship repeatedly and several of his aides were questioned in court as well as several of his personal bodyguards. Next, Lewinsky was given immunity in exchange for the completely true testimony. Soon afterward Clinton admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with Lewinsky and the Starr report was released. Clinton
There is no other time like the 1980s. The 1980s was a decade of important cultural and political change. Music was punk and loud. Pop culture changed. Fashion was wild and over the top, with lots of makeup, accessories, and big funky hair. Sitcoms did incorporate a lot of these elements; however, sitcoms also addressed social issues and problems. Racism was one of the problems in sitcoms in the 1980s, and three shows that addressed racism were The Cosby Show, A Different World, and Diff’rent Strokes.
If I could add a person to the book of black history, it would be Bill Cosby. His importance to the African American history is vastly underestimated. He’s more than a comedian. He’s more than an entertainer. He is a trailblazer whose accomplishments will forever be encrypted into the African American culture.
The Caldecott Medal is named after Randolph Caldecott, a 19th century illustrator. The award is presented to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children and was first awarded in 1938 for a book called Animals of the Bible illustrated by Dorothy Lathrop. The award is given out once a year every year since 1938 with the most recent award recipient being Dan Santat for The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend. Originally there were no awards given out to the illustrators of children books, but once you look at the detail and story building illustrations in each of the award winning books, it is easy to see why they created the award to begin with. It is my belief that without such colorful and interesting
Watching old school throwbacks was my escape from the reality of the worlds approach to what is the new social norm. Cosby sexual assault story has definitely disappointed me because there was so much lessons he taught through his role on the Cosby show that I took to heart. It just doesn't add up to me, how could he have committed such things in disguised and later forget his action to play a double role of Americas Dad. This story is an awakening news to many out there especially for young girls like me, that you truly can't trust no
Sexual assault is sexual intercourse, or any sexual act, done without consent. It is often violent where victims are being physically forced to engage in the act against their will. It may involve a stranger or someone familiar. All forms of sexual assault are crimes, even if the parties involved were drinking, taking drugs, given drugs, or unconscious. Hundreds of Americans are affected by sexual violence everyday. Although there is a lot more attention being given to this topic than there was previously, many people still do not believe that it is a big deal. I see a lot of jokes about rape and sexual violence, and viewers find them to be epigrammatic. Also, men make claims like “asking for permission is a sign of weakness” or “forcing yourself on women makes them love you” as an excuse
In September 2003 then President Bush signed into law the Prison Rape Elimination Act or (PREA). It is the first law of
Many male toddlers aren’t taught that raping a person is not only immoral but also that they have to respect a woman’s choice. Researchers and sociologists believe that when men and women are more aware and educated of rape, there would be less instances of sexual assault in colleges and universities. There are many instances of rape going unreported simply due to young women who are involved do not perceive the incident as rape until they realize it later. Students perception revealed that many young people do not have accurate images of what sexual assault is. As of recently, Time Magazine posts that California’s new law requires colleges to give consent before sex. This bill was introduced by Senator Kevin de Leon during the early summer of 2015. This bill also gives additional protection to students and sexual assault victims, including on-campus advocates for victims, and also educational programs for incoming college freshman. There are many ways to bring awareness of sexual assault and rape culture. One way is to teach children the language of consent. Other ways to raise awareness is to allow teachers to exercise the education of consent. A rape victim once said “Not enough people understand what rape is, and, until they do … , not enough will be done to stop
