A report was received on 06/05/2017 alleging that the mother (Hermionne) left Ashante (C-V 17) with a non-relative since 02/2017 without any legal rights. According to the report, the mother refuses to take her child back home and will not engage with Ms. Aarons (caretaker) to provide legal documentation for the child to be enroll in school and taken to a Primary Care Physician. Ashante has not been is school for the past 4 months and are unable to enroll in school without paperwork. According to the report, Ashante self mutilates her arms, and the mother refuses to get counseling. The report indicates Ashante was to follow-up with a Cardiologist for a chest pain and the mother refuses to take her to the doctor.

Rita Price, writer for The Columbus Dispatch, recounts a horrific story about siblings who suffered numerous accounts of abuse. After being beaten with baseball bats, burned with irons, starved, and forced to drink their own urine, the Ferguson children were finally able to come forward and testify against their adoptive parents in order to send them to prison. The children did not believe they had a voice, and the abuse went unnoticed for years. The Ferguson children, along with many others in similar situations, do not feel they have anyone to turn to. “I just knew the phone would ring some day and Joshua would be dead,” stated social worker Ann Kemmeter regarding Joshua DeShaney and the ongoing abuse he endured from his father. Joshua’s father brutally and repeatedly abused his four-year-old son Joshua (Wichenbach). The State of Wisconsin was aware of this abuse, but still did nothing to intervene and stop the mistreatment of this child (Wichenbach). The State’s inaction led to the Supreme Court case DeShaney v. Winnebago Department of Social Services, in which Joshua’s mother, Melody, sued the Winnebago Department of Social Services claiming, “the social worker deprived Joshua of his liberty without due process of law” (Alexander). In order to fully understand the DeShaney case, one must conduct thorough background research, delve into the court case itself, and analyze the impact the case has yet today.

The Book of David discusses how preserving families in some cases can cost the lives of innocent children. Richard J. Gelles was once a prominent defender of family preservation and believed that keeping troubled families together was what was best for the child. However, he changed his mind after he reviewed the tragic case of David Edwards, who was an infant killed by his mother after falling through the gaps of the child welfare system. David had an older sister who was taken from their home after obtaining juries leading to hospitalization. She was later removed from her parents care after they pleaded guilty to child neglect. A month after David’s birth, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards voluntarily terminated their parental rights and a year later, David was killed. Even with the red flags that the Edwards exhibited with the neglect of Marie, did not prompt social workers to monitor the welfare of David. The case of David completely transformed Gelles’s opinion of family preservation and how our child welfare system is fundamentally flawed and has to be changed so other children do not end up like David. He believes that David’s death could have been prevented and that the idea of family preservation should not be applied to every abuse case. Gelles claims that the child welfare system needs to be reformed and that family preservation does not need to be as strictly reinforced to all cases of child abuse or neglect. Jill Lepore’s New Yorker article Baby Doe: A political history of tragedy provides documented history of child abuse in the U.S. that date back to colonial times. She illustrated tragic cases Massachusetts Child Protective Services had been confronted with and gave a synopsis of the challenging history the Department of Children and Families.

I started my reading with the New York Times Magazine article (I could not resist an article from the Times). During my internship, I had an experience where I suggested to a client that she might reach out to Allegheny County Children, Youth, and Families (CYF) for assistance. I could not understand her apprehension. Reading about Marie and her sons gave me an entirely different perspective. When Marie walked into the DCF office pregnant and the department decided to petition the court to claim her sixth child permanently - while still in her womb; made our clients apprehension real.

The following project, will address the case of Rita and Christiana C . after concern was provided by a neighbor, who reported that 2 years-old, Christina, seemed underweight, neglected and presented facial bruises. She is cared by her currently unemployed single 19 year old mother, Rita C., in a one bedroom apartment in a lower-income neighborhood of Pleasantville, CA. Under these circumstances, a caseworker was assigned by Child Protective Services to visit the home in order to identify the potential impacts and implications for the developmental growth of Christina C. In order to advise Judge Thompson, this project will focus on providing careful explanations that describe the familial and parental characteristics of the socio-cultural environment that favor the removal of Christina from Rita 's custody, followed by the explanation of why the attachment between the parent and child provide reasons that are against the removal of Rita 's custody of Christina, to end on a recommendation on which course of action will best benefit the child.

If I were the child protective services worker that was working and involved with the Krasniqi family I would have done several things differently. There are several themes and concepts in this case that should have been dealt with differently than how they were. In particular there are three that I would reexamine first. I would reexamine and address the cultural competency of the workers and the agency. Next I would reexamine the religious competency of the works as well as the agency. I would also look into alternative placements for these children to go to. Within this essay I will examine certain mistakes that were made by child protective services and law enforcement.

When Jennings was just a kid at the age of 8 years old he was put into his first foster home. He wasn’t told anything by anyone, but his mom promised that she would “be right back”. Jennings didn’t know where he was or what to do so when he didn’t follow one of the many commands that the foster home had established, he was punished, he was abused. Jennings was waiting for his mom to pick him up that same day but she didn’t show up. He was waiting for her everyday for months until she was finally there to pick him up. The foster system didn’t care to even look for a new home for him or the other kids, they didn’t care. They didn’t even try to reconnect Jennings or any of the other kids with their families, the government

The hospital obviously saw that they were not acting in the best interest of the child. They could have sought out social workers or legal counsel in order to fight for the baby. As healthcare managers, you have to take risks and make these hard decisions and no one did this for Baby Boy Doe. I would have rathered fought for the child within the legal system, sought out other family members and social workers, rather than sit back and watch him through a long and painful

They do not deserve to have their lives threatened or to see their mother abused the way she was. However, there were people in my family who felt as though they didn’t need any help or that they were fine and it was all blown out of proportion. While this distortion is damaging to the children who were traumatized, it also shows how trauma affects the person holding the distortion. It shows that their perspective of trauma was handled in a different way than other people and it creates a challenge. As described in the video, Child Protection Services’ role is to protect children from neglect and abuse (Mierendorf, 2000). Similarly, social workers play several significant and complex roles within child advocacy. Social workers need to ensure the safety and well-being of children and be their voice when they are being silenced or maltreated. As a little girl, her mother was very negative and always put her down. Her parents were divorced when Dellena was just a child. Not before long her mother remarried. Dellena’s new stepfather molested her and her sister at the age of seven. Soon after her parents remarried, she was put in the foster care system for five years and her mother never once came to see her. One day her mother showed up and told Dellena she was going home. Dellena said, “The reason my mother wanted me home was because my stepfather wanted me home because he liked twelve-year-old girls. Child abuse in America is an ongoing problem and something needs to be done. There are approximately one million children abused annually in the United States. (Table 339) Cases of child abuse and neglect are reported every ten seconds, and researchers believe that there’s three times that amount that goes unnoticed. (Child Abuse: Know the Signs and Stop the Violence Against Children.) Something needs to be done for these children who are too weak and too powerless to help themselves.
