Overview of The Book of David The Book of David discusses how preserving families in some cases can cost the lives of innocent children. Richard J. Gelles was once a prominent defender of family preservation and believed that keeping troubled families together was what was best for the child. However, he changed his mind after he reviewed the tragic case of David Edwards, who was an infant killed by his mother after falling through the gaps of the child welfare system. David had an older sister who was taken from their home after obtaining juries leading to hospitalization. She was later removed from her parents care after they pleaded guilty to child neglect. A month after David’s birth, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards voluntarily terminated their parental rights and a year later, David was killed. Even with the red flags that the Edwards exhibited with the neglect of Marie, did not prompt social workers to monitor the welfare of David. The case of David completely transformed Gelles’s opinion of family preservation and how our child welfare system is fundamentally flawed and has to be changed so other children do not end up like David. He believes that David’s death could have been prevented and that the idea of family preservation should not be applied to every abuse case. Gelles claims that the child welfare system needs to be reformed and that family preservation does not need to be as strictly reinforced to all cases of child abuse or neglect. Throughout the book, Gelles
This raised questions about the motive behind the apparent murder-suicide. Devonte Hart's viral hug with the police officer became a symbol of hope and unity, but the following actions paint a much darker picture than what was portrayed by the Hart family. The family's isolated and controlled existence, coupled with allegations of abuse, created a stark contrast to the public image they presented. The case highlighted flaws in the child welfare system, as reports of abuse had been made, but the family managed to evade through constantly moving around. This case is like many others found within the family welfare system in which children are adopted and mistreated while being used for clout or tokenism, and signs of the mistreatment are either ignored or not thoroughly investigated to the detriment of the children involved.
Jill Lepore’s New Yorker article Baby Doe: A political history of tragedy provides documented history of child abuse in the U.S. that date back to colonial times. She illustrated tragic cases Massachusetts Child Protective Services had been confronted with and gave a synopsis of the challenging history the Department of Children and Families.
Ashley is a young woman like many in today’s society born in 1985 to a single, teenage mother. However, her story is a success story. Therefore, she survived, although all odds were stacked against her. Due to her mother’s inability to provide for her, the Florida Foster Care System was her home from the tender age of 3 until her adoption at the age of twelve. During that decade, she resided in 14 different foster homes along with her brother. During this period, her brother and other children endured an abusive life which included beatings with a wooden paddle, starvation, made to drink homemade hot sauce, molestation and verbal abuse which led Ashley and her brother to attend a different school each time their foster home changed. She witnessed the tragedy of her uncle being shot and she experienced her own tragedy when thrown from a moving vehicle.
Many children prefer to live with their parents, so they always think the foster care system is the bad guy. Living with strangers is bad enough for them but to add on some foster homes are abusive. Foster Care goes all the way back to the Old Testament, which the churches require widows to care for orphaned children (“Care” 1). It would be a miracle that someone would treat the children like their own. Many foster homes are abusive just like the one Ashley had. Year after year, the increase of foster families is due to drugs, abuse, economy, financial, and psychological problems (“Care” 1). In this society, there are many problems that lead children to have the feeling of worthlessness. It is really sad how many children are in families of irresponsible parents. Child abuse occurs when a parent or caretaker physically, emotionally, or sexually mistreats or neglects a child resulting in the physical, emotional, sexual harm, exploitation, or imminent risk (“Care” 1). It is disgusting how people would do this stuff to kids. These people have no heart and should be punished. Not everyone gets punished, but when the time comes, they will get what they deserve. Ashley’s book shows how her difficulties in foster homes were troubling. Many professional readers enjoy reading about her hard times.
The case plan, in a sense, does follow the principles of family preservation. Downs, Moore, and McFadden (2009) describe how family preservation is a service to help keep children at home with their families rather than in foster homes or institutions (p.243). This service was a reaction to the earlier practice of family breakup, which pulled children out of unfit homes (Downs et al., 2009, p. 282). The services are designed to support families by improving parenting and family functioning while at the same time keeping children safe. The services are built around the belief that many children can be safely protected and treated within their own homes when parents are given services and support that allows them to change (“Family Preservation,” n.d.). Even though it was decided that the mother’s level of care for her children fell below the minimum sufficient level and the children were removed from the home, all but one of the children were placed with relatives, which can serve as part of family preservation in that the children are still within the family unit.
The Talmud, surely a work defined enigmatically in a categorization unique to itself, escapes definition by traditional means. That is, as much as we may study—religiously or academically—we may always fall short of a perfect description of its genre. David Kraemer chronicles this in his Reading the Rabbis: The Talmud as Literature, asserting that, as a student, one often proceeds “more on the basis of intuition than on the foundation of a self-conscious method,” choosing rather to chase shadows of potential genre-classifying factors rather than search wholly for substantive definitions of “literature” or “literary” and proceed with a certain scientific method. Thus, the challenge which he and other authors accept is to delineate a literary genre, if one exists, for the Talmud and then proceed to analyze the text using set literary standards.
David and Goliath starts off strong and already sets off many positive vibes. Being a single mother of two children and having ADHD I come across many challenges, some correspondence with stories in this book. Vivek Ranadive decides he’s going to coach his daughter’s basketball team, he had two principles for coaching. The first one really intrigued me, “…he will never raise his voice.” (19) He mentions how children do not respond well when being yelled at. I agree. Even adults respond differently when being yelled at. You either freeze in fear or get angrier and a shouting match begins. My son recently broke a glass owl while removing a fan from the window. When I approached him, I saw he was upset and afraid so I refrain from yelling and
In this article, McCarthy gives multiple examples as to how the child welfare system affects children and how it affects their development. At the opening of this article, McCarthy focuses on an 18 year old named Jazzmine, who would be thought of by the general
When reading “The New Testament” by Bart D. Ehrman, many questions come to my mind by finishing the second chapter. Ehrman talks about how the New Testament that we have today was put together by the early Christians on what they believed needed to be in the Bible which books to include and which books to not include. Another point Erthman makes in chapter two of his book is that we have none of the original copies of the letters of the Bible. Erthman brings out the point that all humans are fallible and the errors that have been made in the bible. Is the Bible still God breathed? Why do Christians believe in a book that is not what exactly the original books?
The book of Daniel by William Shea is a fascinating and interesting book that explains in a clear and distinguished manner an interpretation of the book of Daniel and apocalyptic prophecy in general. Thorough, historical research forms the basic solid formation of this book, combined with thorough and expansive exegesis of the concepts; although the details of the exegesis are not clearly written out so as to promote the central ideas of the book more thoroughly.
Through this paper you will learn about the family preservation policy which was a movement that was used to keep children at their homes with their families rather than in foster homes or institutions. We will learn more details of how this movement came to be it turned out to be a reaction to the earlier policy of family breakup, which pulled children out of unfit homes. poverty alone was seen as a justified reason to remove children. This paper will also focus on the policy’s values, ethics, and political ideology that affect the policy’s implementation. It will also focus on the rules that need to be followed while this policy is being conducted. This paper will also explore the strengths and weakness of this policy as well as how young
Christopher J. H. Wright is an Anglican clergyman and an Old Testament scholar. He is the International Ministries Director of Langham Partnership International. He was the principal of All Nations College. He is the honorary member of the All Saints Church of Langham Place in London, England. In his book, Knowing Jesus Through the Old Testament, Dr. Wright looks to bring about the unity between the Hebrew Scriptures and the understanding of Jesus pertaining to the Word of God. Dr. Wright points out that the knowledge of Christ Jesus originated in the history of salvation that was planned and worked by the Lord for the people of Israel. This book is one of the most
His silence only encouraged the abuse and rendered a child helpless to the countless beatings and mistreatment. I could not help but think of the defenseless victims like David currently experiencing abuse at the hands of the people who are expected to protect them. I contemplated on the role of the adults in David’s life who propagated the abuse by remaining silent (his father, relatives, and neighbor) and those who failed to protect him, including the school nurse, teachers, and principal. Although, CANRA was not in place when David was being abused, I feel that someone should have intervened by notifying the police department. Eventually, I found myself grateful that now we have a system in place that protects
John Meakin wrote: “The New Testament, which was written in Greek, contains many words that add to our understanding of the concept of sin.” and used a passage from the apostle Paul from Romans 6:6, where he personified sin as a “… an ungodly power that can control people.” As I studied the word sin exclusively within the four Gospels, I found that each Disciple recalled similar yet different truths of the teaching of sin: How it destroys us, condemns us and can jeopardize our salvation. Do you realize that the difference between a sincere, Spirit‑controlled, devoted, godly, obedient Christian and a defeated, weak, struggling Christian is what takes place in the mind? (MacArthur, J., 2012)
Throughout the history there has been major events that occurred which left an impact for generations. A major history that was recorded in the bible was “King David”; base on our understanding of history David was once just a normal shepherd until King Saul the former ruler of Israel appointed him as the new air to the throne. In the present year David is known as the slayer of Goliath killing him with stones he put in his sling and cutting of his head. This event was printed as a biblical history because it is said that before he became King, “God gave Saul the position to become the first emperor of Israel, but after disobeying god’s words he was rejected from the throne” . David became the symbol of Florence, many artists have done sculptures of him and two of the best artists were Michelangelo and Bernini. These two were talented of creating sculptures inspiration of David; although the subjects are the same their style of sculpting is different. There were other artist whose done sculpture of David, but by far these two were the best, in my opinion.
