There are many different styles of leadership out there, some more useful then others depending on what you want to accomplish. “The predominant leadership style of law enforcement leaders has been an authoritarian style, where leaders do not include subordinates in the decision-making process.” (Sarver & Miller, 2013) This style is also used heavily in the military, whether it be during training or executing a mission those in a role of leadership will tell their subordinates what to do and when to do it, expecting no questions or disagreement. I also believe Karen is using an authoritarian leadership style. As you stated, in this type of leadership the nurse tell her staff what to do. This type of leadership can be beneficial in some cases. Once Karen began to lose control this also affected the way she lead her department. I believe the use of democratic leadership would be a great idea. It will allow the staff members to voice their opinions, but I also believe this could potentially turn bad if used all the time. I believe what's best is if Karen used the situational leadership style in order to adapt to every type of situation the department may encounter.

Throughout history, different forms of government have been used to control and lead the masses. One of the most powerful of these forms is Authoritarianism which often aims to consolidate rule for one individual.
