Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The high school students are full of energy at this point in time of their developmental stage a normal human beings and as such they engage in various activities. In the subject of Physical Education (P.E.) these students manifest their individual attitude towards participation in Physical Education activities. This study is interested looking closely into this situation and would like to determine the effect of the factors of attitude and teachers’ qualification towards students’ participation in Physical Education activities at Basilan National High School.
Recent research has shown that degenerative diseases begin in early childhood. As Kaercher (1981) wrote, "There's increasing

Physical education is a type of class in which elementary, middle, and high school students are usually required to participate. It emphasizes exercise, and sometimes health and nutrition. This class, sometimes known as PE or gym class, usually takes place in a large gymnasium, but it can also take place outdoors. While there are a number of advantages to physical education, like most things, there are also a few disadvantages.
Exercise is typically the main goal of physical education. Sometimes, a physical education teacher may instruct his student to perform drills or exercises. Other times, students may play games and sports. Basketball and dodge ball, for example, are two popular PE games. Larger schools may also have an indoor swimming pool that students can use during their gym class.
While many of these drills, exercises, and sports can be played indoors, sometimes a PE class should be held outdoors. Football, baseball, and golf, for instance, are typically outside sports. Weather permitting, some schools may even
First of all, students do not have much knowledge about the different fitness components; they do not understand the relation between the fitness components and health. If students acquire the background knowledge about fitness, it could improve the class engagement and motivation, and increase the independent drive to exercise. Second barrier to students’ achievement is the lack of motivation to be active, and even more difficult, to specific fitness activities, such as sit-ups and push-ups. In today’s society, students spend more time sitting in front a screen and less time moving. Parent and school today have more responsibility making sure the children get enough physical activity. According to the New York Times (2016), “early school physical education (PE) programs can make a significant difference, and the earlier these routines are learned the more likely they will be carried forth into a healthy adulthood”. Another barrier that prevents students’ success is the loss of instructional time due to discipline problems. The classes are too big, with many diverse students with individual problems, which are difficult to address when these issues are from very different backgrounds. Finally, there is not enough support from home affecting not only physical education, but
As an elective class, I have from gifted to LEP students; from native English speakers to ELLs (Beginning and Intermediate levels). Physical Education plays a critical role in educating the whole student. Like other academic courses, physical education is based upon rigorous national standards that define what students should know and be able to do as a result of participation. Physical education is unique to the school curriculum as it is the only program that provides students with opportunities to learn motor skills, develop fitness, and gain understanding about the importance of physical activity. My students are provided with an individualized, developmentally appropriate, and personally challenging instructional program that increases their knowledge, confidence, skills, and
It is the same as playtime but it will focus more on exercising. Physical education will teach children the importance of exercising and staying healthy throughout their life time. Playing is important for children because they learn capabilities of the body and how it moves (Sanders & Graham, 1995). Exercising and learning about the body interests children, anything that has nothing to do with writing and reading will interest children. Children will learn a lot and fast if it interests
Physical education is a vital part of education in schools and has changed significantly over many years and generations to become what it has now from the 1992 curriculum (Accessed at http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1992/603/contents/made. Last accessed 13/03/2011) to the newly introduced 2008 curriculum. It has changed in many ways
Physical activity is an integral part of health and well being in children. Our bodies also require physical activity in order to be healthy.Understanding and supporting physical activity, will help children have the right foundation for a healthy and happy life.Positive experiences with physical activity at a young age promotes the growth if strong bones and muscles, help to develop good posture and balance, obesity risk and chronic disease risk infection are reduced.
To locate relevant reports on the discussion of self-determination within the physical education environment, I conducted multiple searches of the ProQuest and EBSCO databases. During my search I used the descriptors of self-determination, autonomy, competence, relatedness, and physical education. In addition,
Physical development includes providing opportunities for young children to be physically active and interactive, also to develop their co-ordination, control and movement. Children must also be taught the importance of physical activity and also the importance of having a healthy diet.
I believe that physical education and health give a unique opportunity to the students to contribute to the overall well-being and student’s development. As a teacher I believe that the most important things that I can teach my students is a love to be physically active because i believe that physical ability will affect every aspect of student’s life including their mental health, academic achievement, self-esteem, social competency and ability to function well in any environment. The purpose of physical education and health class is to provide the concepts of health and skill related fitness in order to create the student with continuous physically active that can promote the development of life long movers. Physical education and health
Physical education should be a fun class, but fun does not have to mean chaos. I believe in a structure that will allow the students to have fun in a safe way. My lesson plans will be structured so that students are constantly engaged in physical activity. I feel that if I can keep students moving and learning, then the chances of misbehavior will decrease. In elementary school I feel that Instant Activities should be used to get students moving when they get into my class. High school is a little different. I feel that students at the secondary school level should be introduced physical fitness activities that will help keep them in shape later on in life.
Physical education can go beyond just working out. Physical education involves several different approaches for learning. High school students gain more than physical knowledge yet it can improve there approaches toward responsibility, their sportsmanship, and their overall community.
The perspective of this paper is to develop a philosophy on physical education and then explain what kind of job we plan on having later on in life and relate physical education to that. The purpose for developing this philosophy is to try and get the most out of the people I’m working with on physical education, whether it is an adult or adolescent.
Physical education is defined nowadays as a “systematic instruction in sports, exercises, and hygiene given as part of a school or college program” (Park). When most people think of the term “physical education” they think of it as “a broad, inclusive term comprising the fields of physical education, health education, safety education, athletics, recreation, dance education, kinesiology and so on” (Zeigler 1). It may sometimes be referred to as physical training or gym class and mainly is taught in grades kindergarten all to the way up to your senior year in high-school in the United States. The history of physical education dates way back to the Greek and Roman times and has slowly evolved into what it is now today. There is a
Teaching is one of the most important careers that help advance a society. Teachers are important because they are responsible for passing along knowledge from generation to generation. Early Americans made education one of the most important aspects of society when this nation was founded. Formal education has been around thousands of years, but the modern education system in place now originated in the early 20th century. The progressive era in education took place from the 1890s to the 1930s. This era brought about dramatic expansions in the number of schools in the U.S. By 1940, nearly half of young adults were earning a high school diploma (Costrel). One specific type of teacher in a physical education teacher. A physical education teacher holds a big responsibility within the school. They are in charge of keeping the students healthy. P.E. teachers have to have exercise and fun blended into one class. A physical education teacher is a strong career choice because of the pay and benefits, the teamwork aspect, and the sense of self-satisfaction one gets from the career.
Physical Education (abbreviated "PE") is definined as the process of education that develops the human body, specifically fitness and movement skills. PE helps you stay fit, healthy, and flexible. It can also prevent many diseases and lower your risk for getting a certain disease. Exercising can help your coordination and circulation.
In the modern schools, too many elementary schools are so centered academics and don’t focus on the well-being of the students. The school systems also don’t realize that physical activity can help students perform better in the classrooms. In the recent years, there has been a worldwide tendency to reduce school-based physical education in favor of academic subjects. Given the beneficial effects of exercise and the disadvantages of a sedentary lifestyle, cutbacks in physical education lessons are not near as productive as people think. Systematic reviews provide clear
