In the 21st century, consumers demand has grown for processed foods in a fast-paced lifestyle although, historically, fresh fruits and vegetables have been treated as healthier options against chemically treated processed foods. Recent research and health claims encourage consumers to eat nutritious products. Healthy diet plays an important role in prevention of diseases. Organizations such as American Heart Association guide consumers to eat fruits and vegetables to help decrease risks of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. However, concerns remain over processed foods’ nutritional value as they are believed to be less beneficial than their fresh counterparts.
In an article titled “Thermal processing enhances the nutritional value of tomatoes by increasing total antioxidant activity” by V Dewanto, X Wu, K Adom and R Liu, the primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of thermal processing on antioxidant activity of tomatoes. In a well argued introduction, the authors make hypothesis that processed food may retain their antioxidant activity despite the loss of vitamin C. To support his claim, the author represents their previous research outcome that vitamin C in apples contributed <0.4% of total antioxidant activity. On the basis of study on apples, the authors make biased conclusion about association of vitamin C and total antioxidant activity. It can be extrapolated to compare apples with fruits and vegetables in general. Moreover, they did not show any
forty-five pounds to sixty-six pounds” (104). On top of the high-fructose corn syrup people intake, the other sugars also must be accounted for. Therefore, this excessive amount of sugars in processed food is the main cause to the increase of obesity in America.
Discussion of local government is a subject where eyes glaze over and information floats in one ear and right out the other. Most citizens know in greater depth about national politics rather than local, even if the city government has a greater influence and impact on daily life. With the permission of Professor Duckworth, I watched Frisco Independent School District’s board meeting online (link provided, pg. 4). The school board meeting explained a lot about the process, organization, and the structure of local politics.
Many would like to point out that processed foods still contain vitamins, but truthfully they do not provide the quality, or quantity of nutrition gained from eating whole foods. Processed foods, in addition, commonly contain massive amounts of artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, sugar, and hydrogenated oils. The sugars and sodium levels in these foods sometimes surpass the daily recommended allowance. These monstrous additives can cause allergic reactions or even eventually degenerative diseases (Health Teacher). Not all is lost in today’s fast food society; there is an alternative that can prevent our bodies from being overtaken by food imposters. Whole food wins the battle when making the body happy and protecting the bank.
Joan Easterly stated, “Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, the master of symbolism and suggestion” (Easterly 15), which can surely be seen in Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown. Hawthorne is known for writing short stories in the middle 1800’s. Hawthorne lived in various places but always came back to his puritan roots, which had an environment that was heavily composed of the north; this could explain his short stories and their appeal of faith, sin and male immaturity. Hawthorne uses symbolism that can be perceived by each reader in different areas to include religion, nature and the male gender in Young Goodman Brown, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Siegfried Gurshe, a pioneer of the Canadian health food industry, elaborates the need for more natural food, in its living state, in his article “Our Food Is Killing Us!”. In his article, he educates the reader on how dieticians and nutritionists compose formulas for the need of additional “special” vitamins, herbs and minerals to its already “dead” foods (Gurshe 126). According to the producers of these new and improved manufactured foodstuffs, their products help correlate with the newest diet craze, such as the high protein diet. Food industries often times endorse these diets in order to promote the sale of their new diet creations, which are usually ineffective because manufactured and refined foods are already considered dead and lack
With this increase in the productivity of farmers, came a proliferation of food processing industries and fast food restaurants. These food processing industries and restaurants capitalized on the abundant, overly cheap commodity crops to their advantage; to make profit, and to the disadvantage of poor Americans. During processing of these commodity crops, the natural nutrients that give these foods their natural flavors are destroyed. To replace these, food additives and flavorings are added to restore their taste and prolong their shelf life. Often these chemicals contain some harmful elements that affect the way our bodies use food. These highly processed foods, dense in calories,
In the article “Why Is Processed Foods So Bad for You?” the author Michael Hobbes explains what it takes to manufacture and sell a product (1). He contrasts the ingredients of the original homemade recipe and the one that is selling on the shelf. He explains that in order for a product to be shipped and stored for long increments of time, preservatives must be added. Those preservatives may be hurting people in the long run.
In our country, we have been faced with growing health issues and problems. Some of the problems that we have been facing include: high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and obesity. A big question that most people have is “Where do these health issues come from?” Its simple, have you ever heard the saying, “You are what you eat?” Well basically that is true. Most food industries had decided to cut out fat in foods so that it wouldn’t be “fattening.” Well, when you take out the fat in foods, it doesn’t taste very good. So in order to keep the sweet flavor in foods, other harmful chemicals and artificial flavoring and sweeteners have been added to foods so that people will continue to buy their products. The food industry in the U.S. in 2014 is worth approximately $5.27 trillion dollars and is on the rise towards $6 trillion dollars. According to the USDA’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, the average expenditure for a low-cost meal plan for a
There is a common misconception that all processed foods are bad. Of recent, this has been damaging to certain companies interpreted to produce the negatively perceived “processed foods”, even when those foods may actually be nutrient dense, healthy products. It’s concerning that the Obama’s seem to be endorsing this misconception. The media definition of “processed foods” has come to mean foods that have undergone extensive processing with many added ingredients like sugar, fat, and preservatives (Fiore, 2014). These food items are technically classified as highly processed foods. They differ from more minimally processed foods like pre-packaged tilapia, or frozen asparagus, in regards to their effects on
Eating more locally-grown foods would result in healthier diets for all who choose to do so. In almost all grocery stores and markets today, about ninety percent of shelf space is reserved for pre-packaged foods containing a lot of sugar or salt. Processed snacks and frozen meals also lack the proper nutrients in the proper quantities, causing consumers to lose out
Heavily processed foods make up 59% of calorie intake in the average American diet. Food is meant to provide nutrients that humans need to live and stay healthy. Modern day processed foods practically defeat the purpose of food because they provide little nutrients and can cause various illnesses in humans. These negative health effects are primarily caused by the toxic chemicals that are hidden in food. Sadly, the majority of Americans eat processed foods without considering the toxic chemicals the food contains.
When the average middle-aged consumer thinks about “healthy” food, the person first thinks about apples and oranges. When the average “expert” or “scientist thinks about healthy food, the mastermind thinks 0.5 grams of fat, %0.25 of saturated fat, or %0.15 of calcium, vitamin
